PREVIEW: LGBT History Month: Transworkers photographic exhibition

To celebrate LGBT History Month StellaPix is showing her unique photos of Transworkers at the New Steine Hotel in Brighton.

If you are trans, life may not have been easy for you. Your relationships with parents, friends, and neighbours may have been fraught.

The media will have lampooned you, and you may have had to live some or all of your life in stealth in order to live at all.

Or your secret may have been discovered after a lifetime and the repercussions may have cost you, your partner, or your children, or your health, or your job, or your home; or all of them.

You will know all about low self-esteem, feelings of isolation. Feeling of not being the same as others.

You may have suffered loneliness, hate crime or violence. You may have self harmed or considered suicide. You may even have been successful in the latter; as many as 40% are.

Gender dysphoria can be a killer. A key indicator is employment or lack of it.

Unemployment and its fellow companions, poverty and ill-health, are common in the trans community. These are often due to an individual’s low self-esteem.

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s here. Being trans is ordinary, and these pictures are proving it – for what’s more ordinary than going to work?

Contrary to the historically negative and viciously derogatory images in the media, here are ordinary trans people with ordinary day jobs.

The more alert employers are realising the worth of trans people in the workplace, many of whom have historically suffered long-term unemployment as a result of discrimination.

“It’s about what you can bring to the party.” as one employer put it.

Self respect grows out of challenge. There’s plenty in the workplace – but those challenges can be met and overcome, as the pictures in this exhibition show.

By assembling these pictures, Stella hopes that others will take heart and encouragement and be able to avoid some of the pitfalls of self-esteem.

Often, the only thing that holds us all back is ourselves.

Yes, we may still have a lot of work to do and a long way to travel. But is may be a trans person selling us the ticket, driving the train, or even signing our pay cheque.

Get involved now!

If your on the trans spectrum, work in public and would like to be in Stella’s exhibition next year.

Brighton Pride community consultation meeting today

As part of Brighton Pride’s ongoing commitment to community engagement, a series of consultation meetings will be held on the lead-up to Pride 2017.

These meetings are specifically for community groups and organisations that took part in Pride 2016 or will be taking part in Pride 2017.

Pride want your feedback and input to shape how Pride goes forward in the future.

What can they do differently this year to make Pride better for the community?

Without the support of Brighton & Hove’s diverse LGBT+ communities and supporters Brighton Pride wouldn’t be able to deliver record-breaking fundraising year on year or be able to lead the way in campaigning for LGBT+ equality.

How can they make Pride work for you?

Any questions and email: community@brighton-pride.org

IW Pride launches with a bang!

Members of the IW Pride Committee engaged with a large number of Island people across the last weekend at two big events to raise money for IW Pride.

The First fundraising event, held at Coburgs in Ryde, saw a packed venue play host to various Island and mainland talented performers. There were rainbow balloons, rainbow glitter beards and an energetic and fun-packed atmosphere which left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.

Peter Andrew, who performed in his role as Proud Mary, said: “The passion and energy in the room made my job a whole lot easier. I’ve had some amazing feedback and it was great to see everyone getting into the spirit and supporting what is definitely going to be one of the ‘go-to’ events of 2017.”

The event at Coburgs finished at 0200 and the next event started at 0900 at Quay Arts in Newport, meaning a lack of sleep for everyone involved! The Quay arts event enabled people of all ages to attend.

Various primary and secondary schools went along to show support for IW Pride showing a real desire to get involved in the event.

Numerous Dogs paid a visit during the day and this has given inspiration to a future Doggie Pride Pet event, – watch this space for details.

In all, well over 400 people engaged with IW Pride in one way or another over the weekend. This includes people who wanted to get involved in sponsorship as well as people who volunteered their skills.

John Brownscombe, Treasurer of IW Pride, said: “We are thankful to those organisations who showed a desire to support IW Pride and we look forward to working with you all. If any organisations feel that they can bring something to Pride, whether that is Money, or other forms of donations, we would be willing to talk further to you and the benefit that this could bring to your organisation.”

Both events enabled people to make donations towards the cost of staging the Summer event.

Chairman Joe Plumb, said: “We are overwhelmed by the support shown this weekend, not just from the LGBT+ community, but also the wider Island community who wanted to show their solidarity. We raised over 1200 pounds this weekend which will be vital to helping ensure we put on a safe, exciting event for the Island on Saturday July 15 in Ryde.

Whilst we are hopeful that many visitors will come to the Island for the event, we also want to encourage Islanders to be able to participate and feel that they are an important part of Pride.

I want to thank all those who donated their time or skills this weekend to help with our Launch and look forward to working with many more eager people over the coming months with lots more events being planned prior to our main event.”
