The Warwick Rowers project remains one of the world’s most eye-catching straight ally projects, and its influence worldwide continues to grow.

Sport Allies, the charity they have set up and continue to fund, has now become a registered charity.

The charity has caught the attention of top UK politicians and is about to launch an in-depth academic report on homophobia and gender inequality. It’s an extraordinary story of ground level activism that has captured the imagination and support of millions around the world.

Never before has the LGBT community had greater need of its straight allies to assert that the battle for LGBT rights comes not from self-interest but from a belief in justice.

There has been a 147% increase in homophobic attacks post Brexit, and concerns are being widely expressed that the Trump vote will amplify this globally.

Never in recent memory has the support from straight allies like the Warwick Rowers been so important.

Warwick Rowers are photographed and produced by Angus Malcolm.

In Brighton, serving military personnel, cubs, scouts and guides will parade their colours alongside veterans, who will lay wreaths in memory of fallen friends.

Other services are also taking place across the city and include:

The Brighton service – 11am at the War Memorial on the Old Steine.

The Hove service – 2:30pm at All Saints Church, The Drive, Hove.

The Royal British Legion will continue to co-ordinate the Remembrance Activities in Portslade which will take place at Easthill Park Memorial in Manor Road with a wreath laying ceremony taking place at 11am at the Easthill Park Memorial.  Please assemble by 10:45 am.

This year, the Hove service will take place in its entirety in All Saints Church on the Drive. This follows a decision by the Remembrance Committee to make the service weatherproof, accessible and more relevant to the community.

A spokesperson for the committee said: “The Remembrance Committee has been considering changes and improvements to the city’s Remembrance Services. We’ve sadly lost quite a number of colleagues and realised things would have to change in order to maintain the dignity and meaning of Remembrance.

“We felt that the least disruptive and most achievable change was to lose the parade in Hove in favour of a more inclusive service at All Saints. We hope those taking part will appreciate why.”

The service will be attended by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, the Mayor, VIPs and special guests.

Brighton Festival announce theme for Children’s Parade 2017

web-300The theme for the 2017 Children’s Parade, which takes place during the Brighton Festival on Saturday, May 6, is Poetry in Motion.

Jointly produced with award-winning community arts organisation Same Sky, the annual Children’s Parade officially launches Brighton Festival.

The largest of its kind in Europe, the parade is attended by almost 5,000 children from schools and community groups from across the region and cheered on by many thousands of spectators.

Previous parades have seen children dress up as everything from letters of the alphabet and Brighton street names to books, mermaids and even slices of cake.

In 2016, participants were invited to be part of a major historical milestone as Brighton Festival celebrated its 50th year, taking inspiration from the people, places, ideas and innovations that shape the city’s unique character and identity from the Prince Regent to Fat Boy Slim.

The 2017 theme is inspired by Guest Director Kate Tempest, who was recently unveiled as the latest artistic figure to take up the role of shaping the three-week programme of cultural events.

Described by the Guardian as “one of the brightest British talents around,” Tempest’s prolific artistic output across multiple disciplines has attracted her considerable acclaim and a unique range of audiences.

Pippa Smith, Brighton Festival 2016’s Children & Family programmer, said: “We are thrilled with this year’s theme and we are really looking forward to seeing the creativity of the teachers and the ingenuity which they bring to this annual celebration.”

Brighton Festival will take place from May 6-28, 2017.

The full programme will be unveiled on February 15, 2017.
