Olympic gold figure skating champion, Robin Cousins introduced them to the audience at the VIP party last night and the pair treated guests to a magical display of pairs skating to the song The Prayer by Josh Groban and Charlotte Church, before the ice was opened to guests for the first time this season.

The rink opens to the public at 10am this Saturday, November 5 until January 15, 2017, when visitors can book sessions on the ice and dine in the restaurant with its beautiful terrace overlooking the ice.

Zoe Wilkinson is two times British Senior Ladies Champion and has participated in the World Championships and European Championships before winning the ISU Adult Competition in 2014.

Christopher Boyadji is the 2013 British Senior Pair Champion and was winner of the Bavarian Open in Oberstdorf, Germany in 2015. Together they are aiming to compete at the Olympics 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. They are currently completely focused on the World Championships taking place in Helsinki, Finland in Spring 2017.

Robin Cousins officially opened the rink, saying: “The Royal Pavilion Ice Rink is stunningly beautiful with its Regency Palace backdrop and it was great to see Zoe and Christopher perform in such a lovely setting. We hope that visitors to the rink will be inspired to go on and skate more in the future.”

Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Cllr Pete West, who attended the launch, said: “My family and I have had a really wonderful time at the launch of the Royal Pavilion ice rink. We always love it here, both taking a spin on the ice and enjoying the restaurant. The city is so lucky to have the rink here every winter and in such an amazing location.”

Guests were also treated to a performance from talented young figure skaters Sophia and Curtis Elton, who have ice danced and played music on TV as well as for royalty.

With the former Royal pleasure palace as the backdrop and huge rink-side bar and restaurant with a 40 metre terrace, the rink is beautifully lit at night and is a great choice for those who want to skate in a twinkling setting as well as sit down to eat après ice.

Situated just 50 minutes from Victoria by train, all of Brighton’s gorgeous independent shops are on its doorstep so visitors can get a little Christmas shopping in too.

The rink is a huge 880 square metres plus an additional beginners’ area and offers penguin skate aids and skate sizes from ‘just walking’ to adult. There’s no charge for spectating for those who prefer to sit and soak up the atmosphere and the stunning rink side Bar & Kitchen offers mouth-watering patisserie snacks, Christmas treats, a quick drink with the best view in the City and sumptuous sharing platters for families and friends to enjoy.

Tickets cost from £10 for adults (aged 12 and over), £7 for juniors (children under 12) and the one-hour skate times run from 10am to 10.15pm daily.

There are also season tickets for those who want to learn to skate (check website for details) and great concessions for students.

Mayor appoints Amy Lamé London’s first Night Czar

Amy Lamé co-founder of Duckie and chair of RVT Future is London’s first dedicated Night Czar and will work with Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, to help shape the future of the capitols nightlife.

To avoid any conflict of interest with her new role, Amy will be standing down as Chair of RVT Future.

Amy said: “I am honoured to be appointed London’s first Night Czar! But this amazing job means I must stand down as Chair of RVT Future so I can be totally impartial in my role. I will, of course, do all I can to safeguard the capital’s LGBT+ venues. The Mayor has thrown his weight behind the campaign to protect the RVT, one of the capital’s oldest surviving and most iconic LGBT+ venues. I’ll build on this great support in my capacity as London’s Night Czar.

“I can’t thank the LGBT+ community, friends and allies enough for their generous support of RVT Future and our continued efforts to secure the venue and keep it thriving for future generations. Our work is not done! Rob Holley and James Cronin will co-chair RVT Future, driving an incredibly dedicated RVT Future executive team and volunteers towards a community buy-out.

“I’ll be working hard to stem the flow of venue closures across the capital – 50% of nightclubs and 40% of music venues in London have been lost since 2008. The closure – and threat of closure – to so many clubs, pubs and music venues must stop if London is to retain its reputation for world-class nightlife. I can’t wait to get started championing the capital as a 24-hour city for ALL Londoners!”

RVT Future will now be co-chaired by long-standing committee members Rob Holley (promoter of the RVT’s Push The Button, and charity sector Celebrity Manager) and James Cronin (digital entrepreneur and RVT punter for over 20 years).

Rob said: “Obviously we’re immensely proud of Amy and thrilled that City Hall have seen our campaign as such a shining example of what can be achieved! This is fabulous news for Amy, the Tavern, the campaign AND for London.”

James added: “It’s a major win for the campaign and the LGBTQ+ community, and it’s testament to all of our hard work and well managed, positive campaigning that RVT Future and Amy are taken so seriously.”

Rob and James will bring their combined talents to bear on launching the UK’s biggest ever community buy-out.

RVT Future are determined to ensure a thriving future for the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, and protect the iconic venue for future generations of LGBTQ+ people, by bringing it into community ownership.

Soon, performers, promoters and punters will be able to buy a piece of the RVT itself as well as a pint.

Call to end GP surgery closures in Brighton & Hove

Seeing family doctors in Brighton and Hove is more difficult than a year ago and surgeries should be prevented from closing down to help meet demand, according to a study by University of Brighton researchers.

Dr Carl Walker

Some 700 residents were canvassed and 96 per cent said they wanted local councillors and the local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which buys in health services, to immediately draw up a strategy to “guarantee no more GP surgery closures across the city”.

Fifty per cent said it is more difficult or much more difficult to get a GP appointment than a year ago, and 45 per cent said there had been no change.

The survey revealed strong opposition to privatising services: more than 96 per cent wanted public health nursing to remain in the NHS and they called on Brighton and Hove CCG not to spend money moving NHS contracts to the private sector.

More than 90 per cent were unaware private contractors will soon be considered for providing services including wellbeing, anti-coagulation and GP out-of-hours, and they preferred them to remain in the NHS. They said privatisation of patient transport services should not have been allowed to happen.

The Brighton Citizen’s Health Services Survey, the second of its kind, was carried out by a team of University of Brighton academics headed by principal lecturer Dr Carl Walker, from the university’s College of Social Sciences.

He said: “The surveys seek to make local peoples’ voices heard on issues of NHS privatisation and cuts. Ninety per cent said they have never been consulted by the local CCG on any of the local NHS changes they have carried out in the last three years and 83 per cent thought they had no say at all in the running of their NHS services.

“Perhaps if local people had been more fully involved, the patient transport farce would not have happened since 97 per cent of residents believe that Brighton and Hove CCG should not spend money moving NHS contracts into the private sector.”

Dr Walker said the survey showed 90 per cent wanted large-scale cuts to the NHS made the subject of wide public consultations before they are made, including any cuts to community-based, integrated healthcare designed to cope with the pressures of a growing and ageing population.

Peter Kyle MP
Peter Kyle MP

Peter Kyle the Labour MP for Hove & Portslade, said: “It is clear that the health economy for our city is bankrupt. We have a hospital, ambulance service, and health trust all in special measures. Six GP surgeries have closed in the last year alone. Patient transport is in turmoil due to the failed Coperforma contract. Patients and desperately hard working, caring, frontline NHS staff are being let down. In the last week I have called on Jeremy Hunt to appoint someone to conduct a review of health in our city and how it can be improved across the board”.

Simon Kirby MP
Simon Kirby MP

Simon Kirby, MP the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven, said: “I agree that it is important to support General Practice in the local area and this is at the heart of the Government’s commitment to a high quality, seven-day health service.

“To increase patient access to GPs, the NHS will invest an additional £2.4 billion a year in GP services by 2020/21. This investment will be supplemented by a £500 million Sustainability and Transformation package in order to alleviate the pressure on GP services.

“Through new incentives for training, recruitment, retention and return to practice, the Government will deliver 5,000 additional doctors, 3,000 more practice-based mental health therapists, 1,500 co-funded practice clinical pharmacists and nationally funded support for the wider primary care workforce. The Government’s £1 billion Primary Care Transformation Fund will also deliver GP premises fit for the future, as well as investment to support better technologies and the development of modern working practices.

“The primary focus of the NHS is providing the highest quality of care to its patients. I fully believe in the NHS and its core values, and Ministers have guaranteed that the NHS will always provide treatment free at the point of need, regardless of ability to pay. You may find it of interest to know that the use of private providers in the NHS represents just over seven pence in every pound the NHS spends, an increase of just two and a half pence in the pound since 2010, and a slower rate of growth than under Labour. I can assure you therefore that this Government does not intend to privatise the NHS.”

Award-winning Brighton-based speaker and speech coach reveals his secrets with launch of new book

Steve Bustin, the Brighton-based professional speaker and speech coach, launched his new book at an event at Café Plenty in Brighton on November 2.

web-600

The Authority Guide to Presenting and Public Speaking is Bustin’s first book and promises to reveal everything you need to know to give an engaging and compelling presentation or speech.

The book is part of a new series of business titles under the Authority Guide brand published by SRA Books.

In his new work, Bustin sets out his approach to writing, honing and delivering presentations, whether you’re addressing an internal meeting, pitching to clients or speaking at an event.

Bustin is also working on a second title for the series: The Authority Guide to PR for Small Business, due to be published in May 2017

Steve Bustin was named UK Speaker of the Year 2015 by The Professional Speaking Association. He is an expert in media and communications, has spoken at business conferences and events across Europe, and is also well known on the Brighton business scene as a compere and speaker at Chamber of Commerce, ProfitNet and other business events.

Bustin also works with businesses to help develop and maximise presentation skills, social media skills and media interview skills. He also works as a one-on-one speech coach.

Steve says: “I’ve been presenting, training and speaking in public for many years and even tried my hand at stand-up for a few years, so I know how to connect with an audience and how to make sure they not only have a good time but also take away things they can use in their lives and businesses immediately. This book is my chance to pass on everything I’ve learned to the huge number of people who either don’t like presenting or just avoid it altogether. These days presenting and pitching are essential business skills, whether you’re employed (especially as many job interviews now include a presentation) or running your own business, where speaking in public is a great way to promote your product or services.”

The Authority Guide to Presenting and Public Speaking is available on Amazon, iTunes, and from City Books on Western Road, Brighton.
