PCC says she will continue to make sure Sussex is #NoPlaceForHate

Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC), Katy Bourne, says she will “continue to make sure that Sussex Police takes a zero tolerance approach to hate crime”.

Since the EU referendum there has been a marked rise in the reporting of hate crimes. In London alone nearly 600 hate crimes were reported to the Metropolitan Police in the post Brexit week.

Commenting on national reports, Mrs Bourne said: “It deeply saddens me that, since the EU referendum, reports of hate crime appear to have increased nationally.

“Throughout history the British have shown themselves to be a tolerant nation, and one which has been enriched socially and economically by the many diverse peoples who have made this island their home.

“Like many, I have no time for bigotry and believe that no one should be singled out and victimised because of their race, faith, sexuality, gender or disability.

“Although I welcome the news that Sussex Police has not seen an increase in reports of hate crime locally since the EU referendum, I do know that many minority groups have not always had trust in the police. As PCC I am determined to improve this for everyone in Sussex and that is why I fully support any initiative that tackles hate crime, which is a key priority in my Police & Crime Plan.

“In 2015, during National Hate Crime Awareness Week, I launched a bespoke hate crime reporting app to make it easier to record and report all strands of hate crime in Sussex.

“The Self Evident crime reporting app is an existing piece of technology developed by social enterprise, Just Evidence. However, financial investment from my office has enabled more custom-built software to be added which serves a wider purpose: victims of hate crime are now able to send a report straight to victim support services without the need to report to police. The modified app empowers victims by allowing them to choose the kind of support they want to receive. Ultimately, the app puts the victim in the driving seat.

“Another benefit of the app is its ability to record and store video, audio and photo evidence. This is particularly good for witnesses of hate crime and subsequently will help communities feel empowered to tackle it and show that it won’t be tolerated.

“This summer I am delighted to be joining forces with Brighton Pride and several pubs and breweries including Wetherspoons and Harveys, to encourage people to download the Self Evident hate crime reporting app and help make Sussex #NoPlaceForHate. Beermats/coasters are being designed with a QR code to allow people to download the app there and then. The Pride beermats will be produced in rainbow colours along with flags and temporary tattoos. Another version will be produced in conjunction with Wetherspoons and placed in their pubs throughout Sussex during Freshers week.”

At her monthly PAM (Performance & Accountability Meeting) on Friday, July 22, the PCC will question Chief Constable, Giles York, on how Sussex Police is reassuring and supporting local communities who may feel vulnerable since the EU referendum.

Miss Roxy Ritz who is organising the climb, said: “I was supporting one of my drag queen friends, Crystal Ball who was performing at a local venue and went outside to get some fresh air. I was speaking to one of the venue locals, who mentioned they lived in Wales near Snowdonia, which got me talking about Priscilla Queen of the desert,… after going back inside I did a little thinking and then it came to me… Queens of Snowdonia!

“The idea of drag queens hiking up Snowdonia, excited me so for the next couple of days I built on the idea, asked a few people too see what they thought about it, lo and behold, Queens of Snowdonia was born…”

“I messaged a couple of drag queen friends I know in Brighton, about my idea, they accepted the challenge and agreed to help me. So far I will be joined by Miss Jason, Dave Lynn, Betty Swollocks, Sissy Sucks and Stephanie Von Clitz.

Eventually Roxy wants to get at least 20 drag queens together to do this walk and raise £10.000 for 4 mainstream charities, The Sussex Beacon, Macmillan Cancer, Cancer is a Drag, and Terrence Higgins Trust (THT).

Transgender radio star to receive honorary degree

Radio star and transgender icon Stephanie Hirst is to receive an Honorary Doctorate from Leeds Beckett University.

Stephanie Hirst
Stephanie Hirst

Stephanie is an award-winning radio DJ, TV presenter, broadcaster and an icon of the UK transgender community. She is probably best known for fronting the Hirsty’s Daily Dose breakfast show on Capital Radio for 11 years, which earned her and fellow presenters the title of Commercial Radio Presenters Of The Year at the CRCA Awards, and a nomination in the breakfast category of the 2005 Sony Awards.

However, it is not just her broadcasting and radio talent that have put her in the spotlight.

Stephanie, born as Simon in Barnsley in 1975 announced her transition to female, her true gender in the Autumn of 2014. Throughout her journey, she has been praised for the honesty and integrity she has shown and has since been seen as a national icon and role model for transgender issues.

She was included in the Rainbow List 2014 – an annual celebration of the 101 lesbian, bisexual, gay, and transgender people in the UK who make a real difference.

Stephanie made the decision and announced her plans to transition live on BBC Radio Five Live’s Stephen Nolan show in October 2014, an episode that went on to be 5Live’s most downloaded news podcast ever.

In 2014 she also collected a nomination for Breakfast Show of the Year at the Radio Academy Awards, formerly the Sony Awards.

In July 2015, Stephanie returned to broadcasting, this time signing a deal with the BBC for her own show Nothing but the 90s on BBC Manchester. With a return to radio, a journey into television soon followed, with Stephanie presenting for BBC Breakfast and BBC Inside Out.

Stephanie is also part of the extended family on ITV’s Lorraine where she has been a mentor for their Change One Thing and, with a talent for writing, she has written articles for The Independent, Guardian and The Telegraph.

Stephanie will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the University on Monday, July 25 at 11am, for her contribution to public life.

Leeds Beckett University Chancellor, Sir Bob Murray CBE, said: “Stephanie is an inspiration and demonstrates values we can all aspire to, such as integrity and authenticity. She has not only had a successful broadcasting career, but has very much become an icon for the transgender community after being so open and honest about her experiences.

“I am delighted that Leeds Beckett University is recognising Stephanie’s contribution to public life with this Honorary Doctorate. I believe her courage, experience and all that she has achieved will be of great inspiration to our graduating students.”

Fire fighters were called to his flat on the corner of Upper St James’s Street and Charlotte Street at 2am on Saturday July 2, but Mr Phillips was declared dead at the scene.

Police are not treating the fire as suspicious.

Tracey Buckingham a work colleague of Mr Phillips has set up a Just Giving fundraising page to help give him “a good send off”. More than £3,000 has been already donated.

Friends have organised an evening to celebrate Alan’s life hosted by Miss Jason and Maisie Trollette at the Queens Arms in George Street Brighton on Thursday, July 7 from 9pm.

There will be collections throughout the evening with all money donated going towards arranging “the biggest send off possible” for Alan.

Tracey Buckingham, said: “We his friends would like to give him a send off that is worthy of his funny and ever so slightly inappropriate character and therefore we ask that if you feel able to donate something towards the cost of Alan’s funeral and celebration of his life we would be very grateful.”
