Inspectors noted how staff at the hospice involve and treat people with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

The report highlights staff communication, goes on to say that the service provides outstanding end of life care and people were enabled to experience a comfortable, dignified, and pain free death.

Inspectors reported that:  “Peoples feedback about the caring approach and staff was overwhelmingly positive.”

And patients told the CQC that: “The care is second to none, the staff go the extra mile as a matter of course.”

Martlets CEO, Imelda Glackin, said:“We’re exceptionally pleased with the results of the inspection, to be rated ‘good’ in all areas is wonderful however to receive a rating of ‘outstanding ‘is a reflection of the amazing work that happens every day at Martlets. To know that the people we’re caring for described us as ‘being an outstanding place to be, where the care is second to none’ is a real achievement and it’s great the CQC recognised this”.

The Martlets Hospice provides end of life care services to adults with terminal illness including cancer. Hospice facilities comprise of an 18 bed InPatient Unit, a Hospice at Home Service, and Day Services for patients and their carers. The Patient and Family Support team offer practical and emotional support to the families and carers of patients including helping them through bereavement. The Martlets also works with the Sussex Community NHS Trust to deliver the Palliative Care Partnership; this provides a single point of contact for people affected by life limiting illness in Brighton & Hove.

PREVIEW: The Half Life of Love

Directed by Martin Dickinson, The Half Life of Love stars Paul Moriarty, Jack Klaff, Laurence Bown, is produced by Hi-Lo Productions in association with Rialto Theatre and supported by the Arts Council England.

Half Life of Love

The Half life of love is forever. It remains toxic, poisoning life long after love is over.

Alex sits in his chair drinking red wine and listening to music, numb to all but his day to day existence. A sudden knock on the door late at night and Connor has turned up; 17, drunk, disorderly, a mess in the guise of a fit young lover. Alex recognises in him the boy he used to know, an innocent who always loved picnics and tuna sandwiches. How does love and nurture turn to rejection and hatred?

This latest play from Gail Louw is a thrilling examination of the complex relationships of adopted parents, their children and gay partners. The play views adoption, relationships, power, trust and abuse in a way that is universally applicable to all people who suffer torment, no matter what their sexual orientation or gender.

Paul Moriarty and Jack Klaff star in this new production from Gail Louw, the winner of the Best New Play, Brighton Fringe 2014 with her play Duwayne.

Paul Moriarty is a well established actor who has had decades of experience in theatre, film and TV. He has played in all the major theatres including the National Theatre and the RSC. He is particularly well known as George Palmer in EastEnders and Sgt Wells in A Touch of Frost.

Jack Klaff  is a multi-award-winning actor, solo artist, director and writer. Film credits include: Star Wars, For Your Eyes Only, King David, Threat, and Storage. Around 200 TV credits include Vanity Fair, Road Rage and Jack’s own plays.

Laurence Bown also appears as the young boy, Connor. Martin Dickinson is the director.

Gail Louw is an award winning playwright with productions staged throughout the UK, Australia, USA and South Africa.

Her play Two Sisters was staged in LA in January/February 2016. Miss Dietrich Regrets, which was staged in South Africa in June 2015, has just received 4 Naledi nominations including Best Production. Her play Blonde Poison is on at the Sydney Opera House (Studio) in May 2016 and a collection of four plays was published by Oberon Books in 2015 entitled Gail Louw: Collected Plays.

Tackle Homophobia tournament a huge success

Over 135 young people lined up to take part in the fifth annual Tackle Homophobia tournament last Saturday at the Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford.

Tackle Homophobia Project

The tournament run by the Tackle Homophobia Project (THP), alongside Sussex Clubs for Young People, provided twenty-one teams from across Sussex the opportunity to play fun 5-a-side football while raising awareness and showing support for anti-discrimination in sports.

The THP, a partnership between Mercread Youth Centre and Albion in the Community, the official charity of Brighton & Hove Albion FC, is in its fifth year and works with young people from 11-19 years across the Lewes District to raise awareness and challenge homophobia on and off the pitch.

Tackle Homophobia Project

Young People from Sussex had a tough challenge in their respective age groups, with fierce competition in the fast paced 5-a-side matches. Teams from Seaford Head School, a supporter of the project, were triumphant winning both the Under 16’s and Under 13’s categories. Peacehaven beat a strong Seaford team to win their age category for a second year in a row.

The project continues providing a safe informal football session on a weekly basis in Seaford alongside educational opportunities through direct delivery and resource support for groups to develop young people’s understanding of discrimination and prejudice.

Barclays return as headline sponsor of Pride in London

Barclays will once again be the headline sponsor of this year’s Pride in London festival championing the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT+) community.

Pride in London

Since 2013 Pride in London has grown in scale and impact, and provides a platform to campaign for extension of LGBT+ rights and acceptance at home and abroad and celebrating the community’s achievements and progress through social media and advertising campaigns, an increasingly diverse Pride Festival of arts, politics and sport and the Parade itself.

Mike Roemer, Barclays’ Global LGBT+ lead and Head of Compliance, said: “Pride in London is a highlight of the LGBT+ calendar in the UK and a key element in our own programme of activities in support of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and we are delighted to be continuing our support as headline sponsor.

“Our on-going relationship with Pride, both in London and across the UK, is just one of the ways in which we show our commitment to the LGBT+ community.  At Barclays we want our colleagues, customers and clients to feel free to express who they are at all times. We’ve made great strides internally in creating an inclusive global workplace, but we want to go further. By supporting Pride in London, we’re saying “this is who we are” and we want to encourage everyone else to be able to say who they are, without fear.”

Michael Salter Church MBE

Michael Salter-Church MBE, Chair of Pride in London, added: ‘The support of Barclays as our headline sponsor alongside the Mayor of London quite simply makes Pride in London possible. The financial, practical and moral support the team at Barclays provides Team Pride has been crucial to our development as we have worked to put London’s Pride celebrations onto a sustainable footing for the long-term. The wholehearted engagement of everyone at Barclays from the Chief Executive to branch staff has been very powerful and shows what an incredible impact employers can have through supporting their LGBT+ staff in this highly visible way. Coming on board with us in early 2013 was a huge vote of confidence from an internationally known British brand in us as the new organisers of London’s single biggest event and has helped us develop and extend the ways that Pride can serve the LGBT+ community and grow our impact beyond this great city to show London as a beacon to the world.”

Pride in London is a week-long festival taking place from June 10 to 26 and celebrates all aspects of the LGBT+ community. This year’s Parade takes place on Saturday, June 25, alongside entertainment and campaigning in Trafalgar Square and Soho.
