Tories urge residents to get to know their neighbours

Conservative Councillors introduce Know Your Neighbour Project to Patcham and Hollingbury.

Cllr Lee Wares, Cllr Carol Theobald and Cllr Geoffrey Theobald

Ward Councillors Lee Wares and Carol and Geoffrey Theobald have introduced a project to their Ward to help residents get to know their neighbours and particularly those who could be vulnerable, isolated or might need a helping hand every now and then, but especially at Christmas.

Cllr Wares said: “We were made aware of the project run by ‘Know my Neighbour’ (hello@knowmyneighbour.org) and the Christmas Card they have produced sponsored by East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service. It is a simple concept of somebody sending one of the free Christmas cards to a neighbour telling them who they are and how to contact them”, he added “we all probably know somebody who would benefit from having a friendly neighbour nearby that they could call on when they need a little help. At winter this could be just checking in on them or picking up the shopping or medicine”. “It is up to the person receiving the card to decide if they wish to accept any help”.

Cllr Carol Theobald, who sits on the East Sussex Fire Authority said: “this is a great way to be able to try to tackle social isolation and I’m delighted with the support given by the Fire & Rescue Service”.

Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, added: “we all lead busy lives and in many instances letting our neighbours know we are there to help them isn’t through a lack of desire but sometimes knowing the best way to offer help. The Christmas cards provide a way”.

HIV charity celebrate Xmas with friends and supporters

Lunch Positive, the weekly HIV lunch club that provides a healthy meal, community and social space for people with HIV held its Christmas Lunch on Friday, December 18.

Ninety-eight people including members, the entire volunteer team, trustees, supporters from partner charities and friends went along to Dorset Gardens Methodist Church in the heart of the gay village.

Volunteers cooked a fantastic three course meal, and also welcomed three new members who attended for their first time.

Local businesses and members contributed towards a Christmas Raffle that raised £260, which covered the costs of the Christmas Lunch and forthcoming New Year’s Day Lunch.

A lunch club member said: “At the Lunch Positive Christmas lunch this afternoon I was reminded of how much things have changed over recent years. It’s only a few years ago that, when I was critically ill, the only substantial meals I ate were those Friday afternoon lunches. Sometimes it took an effort of will to force myself to go, because my mental health was far less stable than my physical health. The food I ate during the rest of the week was nothing in comparison to that one meal every Friday. One of the ideas of Lunch Positive is to get people to have lunch together and get to know one another. I also know that I am, nowadays, the opposite of the kind of person who wants to talk to strangers. I’ve never been made to feel like I have to ‘join in’ or anything silly like that. It’s always really friendly and welcoming. I so wish that we show everyone how amazing those lunches are, and for so many different reasons. It was a lovely afternoon.”

The British Film Institute (BFI) have revealed the favourite couples from the world of film and television, as voted for by the British public as well as thousands of people from all over the globe.

Brokeback Mountain

Gay and Trans* characters feature in both polls, with Glee’s Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) being just pipped to the top spot in the TV poll, and Torchwood’s (2006-11) Jack (John Barrowman) and Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) coming in at number 5.

Meanwhile the heart-breaking romance between Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis (Heath Ledger) in Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain (2005) was  voted into the film top ten at number 7.

In the North East of England Boy Meets Girl (2015) topped the TV polls, starring trans* actor Rebecca Root as Judy, a trans* woman in her forties who falls in love with Leo (Henry Hepple) ten years her junior.

Favourites amongst the TV poll results are ‘will they/won’t they’ couples, with such couples from The X Files, Doctor Who, Gossip Girl and The Office all featuring in the top ten.

Whilst the TV poll is dominated by contemporary couples, the film poll results demonstrate that classic couples still resonate with audiences, with top ten appearances from Gone With the Wind, Casablanca and When Harry Met Sally.

Lunch Positive volunteers celebrate 2015 in style

Volunteers from Lunch Positive, the weekly HIV lunch club who provide a healthy meal, community and social space for people with HIV shared a Christmas meal at The A Bar on Monday, December 7 to celebrate the achievements of the Lunch Club in 2015.

 Lunch Positive Christmas Lunch

Twenty-seven people enjoyed a fantastic three course meal prepared in Pete’s Kitchen. The evening was paid for by the volunteer team’s own fundraising efforts during November where they provided ‘community catering’ buffets and meals for other charity’s meetings and special events.

Service Manager, Gary Pargeter, said:
“We all had a great evening and send our huge thanks to everyone at The A Bar who made it happen. Our volunteer team has worked incredibly hard this year, and has grown rapidly in maturity. Our volunteers are truly inspirational, getting involved in every aspect of the charity, supporting members and each other, and contributing to plans for the future. This year, over 4,000 hours will have been given in volunteering, providing a weekly service that supports and involves growing numbers of people with HIV. Thank you to all of them, and the support of the public in helping make this happen.”

Safety tips for LGBT+ victims of domestic abuse this Christmas

Christmas can be a really difficult time for members of LGBT Communities around the country. For Broken Rainbow it is their busiest time of year.

Broken Rainbow

Broken Rainbow is the only UK organisation dedicated to confronting and eliminating domestic violence and abuse within and against the LGBT communities.

Christmas is a difficult time for lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT+) people who are experiencing domestic violence or abuse. At this time of year many of us spend more time with partners and our families, it can be stressful, put a strain on finances and often involves a fair bit of alcohol – all of which can trigger incidents.

At this time of year, it is easy to believe you need to ‘try harder’ for the sake of family celebrations and not wanting to spoil the holiday. For some returning to the closet is also the only option for the sake of keeping the peace. All of this can be increasing, stressful and isolating.

Broken Rainbow UK the LGBT+ domestic violence service, will be running business as usual throughout the festive season.

They will Hear You and LGBT+ identified staff will be available to offer help, advice and support.

Their normal help line opening will be available over the holiday period.

Monday, December 21, 10am – 8pm

Tuesday, December 22, 10am – 5pm – Trans service 1-5pm

Wednesday December 23, 10am – 5pm

Christmas Eve, December 24, 10am to 8pm

Christmas Day, December 25, 1pm – 5pm

The same hours will be repeated the following week for New Year.

To use their online chat service, available daily from 2-10pm, click here:

7 key points to remember this Holiday Season in order to stay safe

1.   If you are in immediate danger call 999

2.   Call the Broken Rainbow domestic violence and abuse helpline 0300 999 5428 / 0800 999 5428 to talk confidentially to another LGBT+ person who will listen and help you understand your options

3.   Email help@brokenrainbow.org.uk if you don’t feel able to talk over the phone or to access their online daily chat line, click here:

4.  Talk to a friend or someone you trust. It helps to share your problems.

5.   Remember the violence or abuse is not your fault no matter what excuses you are given or you are making for yourself.

6.  Plan for your safety – think about worse case scenario; if you have to leave in a hurry, what would you take with you (money, ID, and other important documents). Pack a bag with a change of clothes. Where would you go to be safe and get help? You can always go to the police for help.

7.   Keep your mobile fully charged and handy.

Remember you are not alone: Broken Rainbow receives thousands of calls each year from people experiencing domestic violence.

Moving on!

Christmas Day will be the last day behind the pumps for one of the commercial gay scenes most popular licensees, Alex Matthews and his partner, Richard Dene-Morel.

Richard and Alex

Alex and Richard took over the A Bar on Brighton seafront in January 2012 and between them have made it a popular meeting place for a more mature crowd.

The couple have been together for 13 years; Alex worked previously at Revenge, Legends and the Amsterdam while Richard worked at Kruze and the White Horse before taking charge of the kitchen when they returned to run the A Bar. In 2013 Richard won the Golden Handbag for Favourite Sunday lunch at the annual awards ceremony at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel.

Together they managed their own pub The Bib and Tucker on Elm Grove before returning to the gay village in 2012 to run the prime site seafront bar.

Alex chaired the Gay Business Forum, The Village Pub Watch, sat on the Council’s Licensing Strategy Group as well as being on the committee of  the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum.

Paul Kemp
Paul Kemp

Paul Kemp, Director of Pride said: “Alex is one of the good guys and was very helpful in assisting Pride make the Village Street Party safer over the last two years.”

You will have a chance to wish Alex and Richard all the best for the future at the farewell party they are holding on Christmas Eve, December 24 at the A-Bar starting from 7pm.

James Ledward
James Ledward

James Ledward, added: “Alex has been more than just a licensee, he understands the responsibilities that go with earning your living from this community. He worked very hard over the last few years to encourage LGBT bars and clubs to work together, a thankless, but nevertheless very important task and spent hours of his time, voluntarily supporting the police and council on the Licensing Strategy Group to benefit all the other gay bars and clubs in the village. He was also a great supporter of the important work of the LGBT Community Safety Forum. I wish him and Richard all the very best for the future.”

Alex will continue to keep working at the venue until January 6 to effect a satisfactory handover.

French performing arts unite after Paris killings

Following the tragic events that hit Paris on November 13 performing arts professionals united today, December 18th behind the slogan #MaPlaceEstDansLaSalle.

WEB.600

In an act of solidarity and resistance, actors, technicians, venue managers, producers, ticket vendors and everyone involved in the performing arts spoke with one voice to show the world that freedom is more powerful than fear.

Throughout France, in theatres, cabarets and concert halls, whether public or private, in Paris and across the country, all shows changed their name for one day to: Ma place est dans la salle (‘My place is in the performance halls’)

December 18, Ma place est dans la salle was simultaneously a concert, a one man show, a classical piece, a ballet, a musical, during which the audience was able to quench its thirst for sensations and culture and laugh, be moved, sing and dance.

Ma place est dans la salle also featured a series of video testimonials, tweets and social media posts in which celebrities, comedians, singers, and dancers, showed their involvement.

From backstage to under the lights, and on the streets, everyone reasserted their belief that singers, comedians, actors belonged on the stage and audiences in front of them.

And for each of them: #MaPlaceEstDansLaSalle

Across France, the public was invited to book tickets and show their support and their determination to carry on attending shows by sharing photos, videos and their thoughts.

Laughter and life echoed in concert halls and theatres: #MaPlaceEstDansLaSalle

The campaign was made possible with the support of The French Ministry of Culture and Communications, La Ville de Paris and Groupe Audiens.
