PREVIEW: 2016 Asia House Film Festival ‘goes global’

Asia House, the London based centre of expertise on Asia, has announced that its annual film festival will return to London next spring with a diverse programme of films exploring transnationalism and globalisation.

Breaking Boundaries: Asia House Film Festival 2016 will take place from February 22 to March 5, and will include 11 feature films, three documentaries and five short films, from countries including Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Myanmar and Afghanistan.

All films are being screened in London for the first time, and there will be several European premieres.  The festival will also include a series of special events at Asia House.

The programme kicks off on February 22 with an opening night gala at the Ham Yard Hotel in Soho. Screenings will subsequently take place at the historic Regent Street Cinema from February 25 to 28 .

The Regent Street Cinema became the birthplace of cinema in the UK in 1896, when the Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe machine was first demonstrated to the press. The cinema closed to the public in 1980 and became a lecture theatre. Following a fundraising campaign the 119-year-old cinema re-opened its doors in May 2015, reinstating one of the most historic cinemas in Britain to its former grandeur.

The films selected for 2016 represent a globalised world in which culture, politics and economies are transcending national boundaries. There are a number of international co-productions featured too, reflecting how the film industry has also globalised.

Jasper Sharp, the Festival’s Artistic Director, says: “There are some enthralling, insightful and hugely entertaining titles emerging from places you’d least expect, and which we rarely get a chance to see on-screen. Many of the films selected reflect ideas of how cultures, identities and experiences are increasingly transcending geographical boundaries and, though the Asian continent encompasses such a vast and varied range of peoples and nations, there are commonalities between these that will resonate with everyone.”

Breaking Boundaries will come to a close at The Cinema Museum in Kennington, with a special one-day retrospective entitled Singaporeana, featuring British and American films shot in Singapore during the 1960s and 1970s.

To date the festival has previewed and premiered films including In the Absence of the Sun (Indonesia, 2014); The Last Reel (Cambodia, 2014), Passion (Mongolia, 2010) and Unforgiven (Japan, 2013).

The full programme for 2016 will be available on the Asia House website in January.

At their Halloween Party they raised £595.71 for the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity Appeal.

During the last month they raised a further £1,100 to buy a defibrillator for the bar. It will be registered with the local ambulance service so if anyone has a heart attack in the vicinity of the pub and dials 999 they get sent to the pub to get the defibrillator and can start using it on the victim before the ambulance arrives on the scene.

The money for the defibrillator was raised with a personal donation of £600 from one of their regular customers Vernon Morash and his partner Roger, a £200 donation from Robert Beveridge the owner of the Grosvenor and the rest was raised from a raffle at the bar.

The event, was created by Ally Events, a student-led group and hosted by drag performer, Sally Vate.

The evening began with a short talk from Billie Lewis, Elected Chair of the LGBT CSF about the work the Forum’s volunteers do and was followed by an evening of comedy, cabaret, and a raffle.. Performers donating their time free of charge included Drag Queens Kara van Park, Davina Sparkle and Stephanie von Clitz.

Ally Events Committee

A spokesperson for Ally Events, said:  “The event exceeded every expectation that all of us at Ally Events had. It was great to see all ages attending from students to locals at the bar, who enjoyed a night full of comedy, cabaret and festive fun all in aid of the LGBT CSF. We are also grateful to Billie Lewis, The Queens Arms staff and LGBT CSF volunteers as well as everyone attending for making the event such a success with a great atmosphere”

Raffle prizes included a private pod on the Brighton Wheel, a giant Millie’s Cookies cake, a meal for two at Archipelagos and a £50 Mark Scott hairdressing voucher. A prize was also awarded to the most festively dressed person attending the event.

After expenses were paid, the event raised £309.84, with all proceeds going to the LGBT CSF.

Billie Lewis said: “It was great working with the students on this project. We were able to give them guidance and support as they developed the event and in return they delivered a fantastic community experience. Their commitment to produce a fun night and raise as much money as possible was commendable. It was very reassuring that  a younger group of allies reached out a helping hand to support our cause. We would like to thank not only the students but the Lecturers at the University who assessed the students on the night. Our thanks also extends to those who attended and donated prizes and the management and staff at the Queens Arms who opened on a Monday and gave us the venue for the night free of charge”.

All monies raised on the night will be ring fenced for the LGBT CSF Safeguarding account. This will enable the Forum to assist vulnerable LGBT people currently facing homelessness, following refusals of same day homelessness applications for emergency housing support by Brighton & Hove City Council.
