PREVIEW: ‘Geronimo’s Candlelight’: Naked Eye Gallery

Geronimo’s Candlelight: A stunning exhibition of photographic landscapes of the US deserts and canyons by Brighton photographer Stuart Michaels.

Stuart says: “A few minutes after sundown in the California deserts, when all the tourists have deserted the viewpoints, a very beautiful thing happens. The sky glows softly, and then for a minute or two becomes the pure clean colour of rosé wine.

“I call it Geronimo’s Candlelight, because it is briefly astounding, and elusive – then gone.

“But what better way than the still image to let us catch, and linger over it? It permits us to pore over a single instant and savour it to our heart’s content. And what better places than the Yosemite National Park at sundown – or Death Valley, or Bryce Canyon at sunrise.

“For every successful landscape photograph, there are many, many failures. These are some of my successes. I hope you can find three minutes – or more – to look and enjoy.”

To win a limited edition A3 print in a free prize draw just drop your name and email address on a slip of paper into the pot at the gallery.

Mayor visits Lunch Positive

The Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Lynda Hyde visited Lunch Positive, the HIV Lunch Club today, (Friday, October 9) to meet volunteers and members, and to see the work the project delivers.

Lunch Positive provides a healthy meal for HIV positive people every Friday afternoon at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church giving positive people the chance to make new friends, socialise and enjoy peer support.

Gary Pargeter, Volunteer Project Manager, said: It was a privilege to host a visit from the Mayor and to share lunch with her. It was a particularly busy session, with around 55 people spending time together, new volunteer applicants and outreach visitors joining us also.

“Our kitchen volunteers served up a fantastic meal, as always; and our front of house volunteers did a great job spending time with existing members, new, and those who we had not seen for a while.

“It was very useful to have the time to talk directly to the Mayor about the challenges that still exist for many people living with HIV, and how a supportive community space
and peer-support make such a difference to people’s lives.

“It was especially rewarding to hear the Mayor thank everyone for their support of the HIV community and their commitment to volunteering.”

New trans storyline for Eastenders

The BBC have announced a new trans storyline for EastEnders and the part will be played by a trans actor.

Roley Carter Millington
Riley Carter Millington

21-year-old Riley Carter Millington will become the first trans actor to play a trans role in a UK soap.

Riley told BBC Newsbeat: “I can honestly say that I have now fulfilled my two biggest dreams – to be living my life as a man and to be an actor.”

The announcement comes following a committment made by Eastender’s Executive Producer Dominic Treadwell Collins at Student Pride this year to develop a trans storyline for the soap and he promised the part would be played by a trans actor.

Student Pride Festival Director Ollie Parr, said: “We’re so proud to have had this announcement made during Student Pride.

“Seeing trans characters represented in the media is so important, this news is particularly special because a fantastic trans actor is the best person to do this storyline justice.

“We look forward to watching Riley play Kyle in EastEnders!”

National Student Pride returns to London in 2016 on the weekend of February 5-7 at the University of Westminster with night-time events at G-A-Y and Heaven.

The UK’s largest LGBT Careers Fair and winner of Best Event at the 2015 LGBT Awards is also back as part of the event.

Get Online Week: October 12-18

During ‘Get Online Week’ residents without basic digital skills will be given the chance to gain access to the Internet and help with job seeking online.

Brighton and Hove City CouncilThere are 10.5 million people in the UK without the knowledge of how to access information online who are being isolated by the digital age.

People without digital skills are disadvantaged when seeking employment and job hunting can be a major challenge. Figures from the Tinder Foundation, an organisation promoting digital inclusion, show 72 per cent of employers would not interview entry-level candidates with no digital skills.

This Wednesday, October 14, at 3.30pm a new job club initiative is being launched at Jubilee Library to help local people on Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) to gain online skills. The job club has been set up through joint partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council Library service, Job Centre Plus and the National Careers Service.

Cllr Emma Daniel, lead councillor for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Equalities, said: “The Libraries Service, alongside other voluntary groups in the city, has a valuable role to play in helping people gain digital skills which can improve their quality of life. Many employment, health and finance services are now readily available online. At the same time businesses and organisations often expect customers to be able to get in touch using web, app or email. Yet many people grew up without computers or couldn’t afford to buy into online devices and they are now being left behind. Knowing where to turn to learn these skills can be quite baffling because much of the information is online. Providing support in a library, a familiar and trusted place, offers people a safe starting point where they can meet skilled staff and volunteers to learn about the opportunities to be gained by developing digital skills.”

The Brighton & Hove City Council Libraries Service has been awarded £5,000 from the Tinder Libraries Digital Inclusion Fund to support the new job club project. The funding will be also be used for an associated initiative, starting at the same time, taking Internet access to the Hangleton Food bank using a 4g enabled i-pad.

Local libraries play a significant role in helping local people improve their digital skills, connect with their community and find useful information via the Internet. There are a range of initiatives underway to increase digital inclusion and encourage more people to gain online skills. Residents are encouraged to ask at their library for information on what is available locally and for their specific needs.
