EATING OUT: The Setting Sun

You will find The Setting Sun Terrace Bar up the hill behind American Express at the crown of Sussex Street.

The Setting Sun: Views from the Terrace
The Setting Sun: Views from the Terrace

It’s a bit of a walk to get there, but well worth the effort as the outside patio affords impressive sweeping views across the city. On the evening of our visit we watched the sun go down to the west. The views were quite stunning.

Outside the pub appears quite small, once inside there are plenty of places to sit in the farmhouse styled dining areas, there’s a lovely conservatory and a large terrace with a covered outside lounge area.

and changes every week. You can check out online whats on offer before you go.

Houmous with pitta bread
Houmous with pitta bread

We started with 3 Lite Bites: Houmous with pitta bread (£5.95), garlic feta seasoned french fries (£3.50) and grilled haloumi and tomato (£5.25).

The garlic feta cheese was to die for, moist, strong on the garlic and served with crispy fries. This signature dish is highly recommended.

Grilled haloumi and tomato
Grilled haloumi and tomato

At the best of times haloumi can be quite rubbery when it is served, making it somewhat a hit and miss choice. This haloumi was spot on retaining a clear flavour of goat’s milk and melted in the mouth. It was served with large slices of tomato and a drissle of balsamic vinegar.

The houmous was just as I like it slightly crunchy and perflectly complemented by the olive oil used.

One word of caution, all three dishes were large and two would have been fine, bearing in mind we had main courses to follow.

Greek salad with chicken
Greek salad with chicken

For mains I chose the Greek salad with chicken (£9.95). Wonderful flavoured leaves, crunchy red onions, peeled cucumber, crispy crutons, creamy feta cheese and marinated chicken strips. It was stunning, the chicken was moist, tender and full of flavour while the salad was a meal on its own.

Blue cheese burger and chips
Blue cheese burger and chips

Mrs Ledward tried the blue cheese burger and chips and reports the burger meat was lean and moist and the blue cheese complemented rather than overpowered the beef in the burger.

Sadly we left no room for any of the puddings on offer which included sticky toffee pudding with cream or ice cream (£4.95) and home-made berry cheesecake with fresh cream (£5.95).

The Setting Sun

We did not try any wines but Jon says his wine list evolves every month and they only lists wines he and Matt personally like and would be happy ordering a second glass of.

For lovers of beer they have on offer a monthly rotation of three ales that reflect the ales available from the many breweries opening up around Brighton & Hove in East and West Sussex.

If you want a tip go up mid to late afternoon for afternoon tea and clotted cream scones, and, oh yes the mandatory glass of champagne!

Despite only being open for a month, Sunday lunch is already very popular and costs £10.95.

Kemptown MP formally objects to Meadow Vale appeal

Simon Kirby, the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, submits formal objections to proposed housing development at Meadow Vale in Ovingdean.

Meadow Vale Demo

The application to build 85 homes on greenfield land between Ovingdean, Rottingdean and Woodingdean in Brighton was rejected by Brighton & Hove City Council’s planning committee earlier this year but the developers, Lightwood Strategic, have appealed the decision.

Mr Kirby has written to the Planning Inspectorate, the body who will make the decision, to outline his concerns about the proposed development.

Simon Kirby: MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven
Simon Kirby: MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven

Simon said; “I have always been consistent that any new development in the city should be on brownfield and city centre land rather than greenfield sites such as Meadow Vale. But it is not just the unspoilt location that my constituents are concerned about. The infrastructure through Rottingdean and on the Falmer Road, which is already at breaking point, would clearly not be able to cope with hundreds of extra cars on the road. I am also concerned that doctors’ surgeries and other services would feel the strain.

“I have been contacted by thousands of my constituents with their very real concerns about this development and I will be standing alongside local residents who feel that this application should not be approved.

“I would encourage all who have objections to make their views known to the Planning Inspectorate by the 22 September as part of this process.”

“Local LGBT/HIV organisations who provide effective front line services to the LGBT communities in Brighton and Hove will receive their grants at the Rainbow Fund and Pride Business Grant Awards at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel, on Tuesday, September 8 at a ceremony hosted by our Patron Zoe Lyons.”

PREVIEW: Outside In: Chichester

Poet, painter and activist Vince Laws will be appearing at Pallant House Gallery on World Mental Health Day.

Vince Laws

The event will be compered by Colin Hambrook, the editor of Disability Arts Online and Vince will be performing at 20 minute solo set.

Vince said; “The way the 2 hour session works is that we have 8 open mic slots that we take bookings for beforehand which is a mixture of outside in poets and others from the local community. After a short tea break, the second part is for 2 programmed poets who each have a 20 minute slot to do whatever they like in terms of poetry and performance.

“Whatever I like? Fabulous! I’ll bring My Mental Helmet if you’ll bring yours…”

‘My name is Vincent, and I like it, and I am a poem.’

Vince Laws takes his poetry off the page into art and performance and was described as ‘playful, provocative, political, and passionate’ only today, on Facebook.

‘My Mental Helmet is safer, darker

Heavier, harder to communicate

Here I am alone, protected

Isolated, insulated from the throng

Crying in car parks, round and round

Ripples in a goldfish bowl

But you can’t sleep

When you think about it.’

Vince added; “I will repeat the poem 3 times, second time wearing My Mental Helmet. Come along and see.”

You can report an online nuisance text or call to the consumer champion, Which? Just remember to note the name of the company who made the nuisance call, the number they called or texted from and the date and time of the call.

Simon said; “I know the issue of nuisance calls is something a large number of my constituents have been affected by. These can often be very stressful, particularly for older people. It is important that residents are aware of the action they can take to deal with this problem and I am happy if I can help raise awareness of this.

“I would encourage everyone to use the reporting tool on Which’s website if they receive a nuisance call or text.”
