New travel card to deliver cheaper travel

WEB.300Brighton Transport Project offers road to better health with cheaper travel.

A new council initiative has been launched to promote sustainable travel options for workers in Brighton & Hove.

Representatives from some of the city’s largest employers, including EDF Energy, Brighton and Sussex University Hospital NHS Trust, Brighton & Hove City Council, University of Sussex and the University of Brighton, gathered at The Grand Hotel on June 3 2015 to launch the easitBRIGHTON&HOVE travel card which offers reduced bus and train fares for those working at organisations signed up to the scheme.

The card is one of a series of incentives designed to reduce congestion and improve air quality in the city as well as improving the health of residents by encouraging them to choose sustainable transport options to get to work, university, college and school.

Offers include a 15% discount on all Southern Railway tickets across the network (excluding London Zones 1, 2 & 3) including weekly, monthly and annual season tickets and a 10% discount on tickets bought on Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company’s Key smartcard.

All businesses operating in Brighton & Hove are eligible to sign up to the scheme which is free for the first year.  Once registered, their employees may then apply online for an easit card costing £4.80 and begin saving money on their everyday travel.

Gill Mitchell, BHCC’s Lead member for Transport, said: “The easit travel card is exactly the type of initiative that we want to promote in the city. It offers workers a great incentive to use public transport thereby helping to reduce unnecessary car journeys and cutting congestion.”

Mel Mehmet, Chief Executive of easitNETWORK, said: “Sustainable business practice is no longer a niche, but a mainstream movement across the whole spectrum of the business community. There now exists a real desire to address transport issues and that is where easit can help make a difference.”

easitBRIGHTON&HOVE travel card is one of a number of initiatives of the East Central Brighton transport project, funded by the Department for Transport through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

The easitBRIGHTON&HOVE project will run until April 2016.

The main aims of the fund are to:

♦  support the local economy and facilitate economic development

♦  reduce carbon emissions

♦  help to deliver wider social and economic benefits

♦  improve safety

♦  bring about improvements to air quality

♦  actively promote increased levels of physical activity and associated health benefits

The project will achieve these objectives with the following schemes:

♦  Residential Personalised Travel Planning

♦  Business, University, College and Destination Travel Planning

♦  School Travel Planning

♦  Adult Cycling and Maintenance Training

♦  Cycling and Walking Permeability Study

♦  Road Safety Campaigns

♦  Pedestrian Wayfinding

easitBRIGHTON&HOVE is being funded by the Department for Transport, Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF), and is free to join in 2015/16 for businesses and educational providers based in the eastern and northern areas of the city centre.

Businesses in other areas of the city can also join on request.

The scheme aims to provide discounted travel options, particularly around public transport and cycling, to help make them more realistic and attractive ‘door to door’ travel options for getting to work and any business related journeys as well as getting about for leisure purposes.

Perfect Pitch Award for Musical Theatre Writing

Theatre Royal Stratford East and Perfect Pitch will be partnering together to present the 2015/16 Perfect Pitch Award for Musical Theatre Writing.

Perfect Pitch Musical AwardBOTH companies, known for developing new musical theatre, are collaborating on the project, which will see a new, British writing team awarded with £12,000 and the opportunity to collaborate on a new musical.

Writers from across the UK apply as individuals to take part in the scheme and successful candidates will be paired up with a collaborator to work on a 10-minute pitch of a new musical which will be presented in rehearsed reading format before a panel of experienced industry judges.

The final pitching event will take place at St James’s Theatre on February 5, 2016 where the winning team will be awarded the £12,000 prize fund and will be tasked with writing a full draft of a new show in a 12-month period, with a view to having the piece presented in a professional staged reading or production of the piece.

They will be mentored and supported throughout by Theatre Royal Stratford East and Perfect Pitch.

Andy Barnes, Executive Director at Perfect Pitch said: “We have been chatting with the team at Theatre Royal Stratford East for a while about working together on a project and after we invited Kerry to sit on the judging panel for our last Award, it felt like a natural progression to collaborate together this time around.”

Kerry Michael, Artistic Director at Theatre Royal Stratford East added: “Creating new musical theatre is a key part of the work we do here so we are always looking to discover new artists to work with. We’re delighted to be partnering Perfect Pitch on this project and hope to find original storytellers that want, like us, to re-fresh the way new musicals are presented.”

Two years ago over 300 applicants applied for a place on the inaugural award scheme, which was ultimately won by Chris Bush and Matt Winkworth with their piece Odd which continues its development following a performance at Royal & Derngate, Northampton.

Applications are open from June 12, from playwrights and screenwriters to composers and songwriters, and no previous experience of writing a musical is necessary.

Film festival fundraser at Royal Vauxhall Tavern

The Whatever DIY Film Festival (WDIYFF) is holding a benefit evening at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern on Tuesday, June 16.

The Drakes
The Drakes

WDIYFF is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers who aim to showcase the best queer and DIY film from the LGBTQ community.

This year organisers want to make the festival as accessible as possible by subsidising tickets and providing BSL interpreters where and when possible.

This can only be done through fundraisers and donations and support from the community.

WDIYFF will be launching a Kickstarter campaign very shortly, but in the meantime you can help them out by going to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern on Tuesday night (June 16) where they’ll be putting on a packed performance show.

♦ Performers at the fundraiser will include:

The Drakes
A group of butches, transmen and masculine-identified people who joined together in the spirit of masculine solidarity in early 2012. Their aims are to promote female masculinity and butch pride and they get together regularly to socialise and strut their stuff on the queer scene. The Drakes run their own parties and strive to create a welcoming and intimate atmosphere, while also being involved in a number of creative projects.

♦ Rachel & Marie
Award Winning Rachel and Marie bring passion, connection and dancing from the heart. They will be performing a movie related dance from their repertoire.

♦ Dj’ing by Joe Pop and Hug The DJ

WDIYFF will also be showcasing a selection of FILMS from the 2014 Wotever DIY Film Festival! There will be a raffle with awesome prizes and a popcorn and cake stall.

The RVT is wheelchair accessible but the toilets are not. If you require seating, space for a wheelchair, other equipment or any other assistance telephone 020 7820 1222 in advance to let the organisers know and they will organise this for you.
