Lesbian & Gay Professional Networking Group launched

New Lesbian & Gay Professional Networking Group celebrates first successful event in Brighton.

Social Vocal

AROUND 40 people passed through the doors of the Dome Room at Pub Du Vin, earlier this month for the first Vocal Social, a new LGBT professional networking night.

The night consisted of networking over relaxed drinks followed by a talk from Ruth Chapman of the i360, detailing some of the milestones to come in the building of the seafront tower. After the talk the informal atmosphere continued with further drinks and networking.

The event drew a diverse crowd including small business owners, publicans, event professionals, security consultants, accountants, personal trainers and coaches, journalists and publishers, insurance industry professionals and staff from some of the city’s major employers

Trevor Edwards one of the joint organisers, said: “We are really pleased with the turnout for this first event, as group of friends we had an idea for an event like this some years ago. However a few weeks back we said let’s do it. So in essence the night was planned and delivered in less than five weeks. We have had some brilliant feedback which has given us the confidence to go ahead with a second event on Wednesday, July 1.”

He added: “The second event will very much follow the format of the first. We’ll be announcing a venue and speaker soon. However we have already set the date for Wednesday 1st July and it’s great to have so many who have already booked tickets so far in advance.”

Vocal Social are already adapting their plans to run the event bi-monthly throughout the year. It is now planned to swap to monthly operation in the autumn.

Craig Royle, Food & Beverage Manager of the Queens Hotel who attended said: “It’s great to have an alternative night to meet and chat in a relaxed atmosphere whilst catching up on things happening in the city. It’s something that has been missing from the city for a while.”

The second Vocal Social will take place on Wednesday, July 1 from 6.30 – 9.30pm and there is an extra special discount offer on tickets until the venue is announced.

Along with offer tickets, standard tickets are already available online at vocsoc.com (£8 in advance) or £10 on the night.

Pop ‘n’ Olly to launch LGBT videos for children

A gay fairytale romance is the latest story amongst Pop’n’Olly’s educational videos for young children.

WEB.600
THE Youtube channel, created by presenter Olly Pike, is a free resource which provides educational establishments with media involving LGBT themes.
“I feel the best way to battle discrimination for future generations is to start with children” says Pike from his Kickstarter page. “We should educate them about a wider cross-section of society and teach acceptance with regards to love, kindness and respect.”
Pop’n’Olly’s newest video Prince Henry, depicts a loving romance between a young Prince and his servant Thomas.
The video focuses on the idea of class being a discriminating factor rather than sexuality, as the Princes father is happy for him to wed either boy or girl. The video goes on to teach how all humans are equal regardless of our differences.
Previous episodes look at different family setups, including those headed by same-sex couples. Pike also aims to break-down gender stereotypes, his video Super Balloon Dude, involving a pink costumed super hero, helps to “Encourage children to be themselves whilst promoting diversity as a positive notion”.
Pike plans to create more free videos on diversity, particularly focusing on LGBT themes, and intends to develop further his channel with help from his recently launched Kickstarter page.
He hopes to fund video production through this page, as well as publishing Prince Henry which can be claimed as a reward by pledging. Additional books, which tackle similar subjects with the theme of discrimination, are also part of Pike’s long-term aspirations.

Olly continued: “The ultimate goal, would be to have my work integrated as part of the Key Stage 1 schools syllabus, across England and Wales and then to expand this as an international protocol. I think it’s vital subjects like these be taught alongside academic subjects, after all, what is an education worth, if it is lacking in basic human rights?”

Pike says each script goes through a thorough editing process to ensure that the tone is completely appropriate for the intended audience and that the final cut delivers a message that is informative, entertaining and non judgemental.
He said: “It is vital we provide learning tools such as this for future generations, content which enables conversation, discussion and ultimately combats discrimination.”

Ukuleles tune-up to Paddle Round the Pier

Get on board the Ukulele Stage at The Paddle Round the Pier Beach Festival on July 4 & 5.

Nicola Bloom of Ucanukulele presents the Paddle Ukulele Stage for the fourth year running and promises to showcase a strum-tastic range of four-stringed talent over the weekend.

Nicola says: “There are many reasons I organize this event but it comes down to the fact that ukulele players are some of the friendliest people around – It’s a huge team effort for a great cause.”

The rise in popularity of this plucky little instrument shows no sign of stopping  as sales of Ukuleles in Britain have reportedly doubled to around 250,000 a year since 2010 with a growing number of ukulele jam groups across Sussex to choose from.

Local groups playing the Ukulele Stage carry some entertaining names including WUKULELE (Worthing Ukulele Group), BAD UKES (Brighton After Dark Ukulele Group) and LUSH (Lovely Ukulele Strummers of Hove) which all adds to the fun of the occasion.

Other acts over the weekend include vintage songstress Tricity Vogue, Elvis aficionado Lady Ukulele, children’s singer songwriter Al Start, and ‘Meriel’s Secret’

Headlining for the first time is the ever-popular Brighton duo ‘DB UKES’ who have been shaking up the ukulele scene with their original instrumental compositions.

And it’s not all about the music either. The Ukulele Stage boasts some innovative pieces of original artwork including a giant ALOHA installation made entirely out of vintage ukulele LP covers. And Tiki god sculptures by local artist Tark Mills.

To help those watching their waistline during the summer months, a new Topped Salad section has been introduced:

New to the Sandwich and a Drink section is a Chicken, Chorizo & Tomato Flatbread costing just £5.45  (chips are £1 extra). The chicken is delicious with a tasty blend of chorizo and tomato. This is my favourite new dishes on offer and the price includes the choice of a pint of Guiness, Cider or Lager and various soft drinks.

New to the summer menu is the Great Balls of Fire Burger (£8.25) a classic 6oz burger topped with crispy chipotle pork balls, extra hot sauce, salad, a gerkin and chips. The sauce is served on the side so taste it before pouring over your burger. It is very spicy, but if you like spicy food you will love this dish.

The Pizza section has been expanded for this new menu with a good selection of 12 inch pizzas available. If you want a healthier option, try Pizzas Light, a half size pizza with a Kitchen Salad and dressing on the side. Pizza light is available for all Pizzas except the new top of the range Onion Ring Tower of Pizza (£7.75) which comes with fresh chicken, red pepper, pepperoni, jalapeños and a six onion ring tower.
