YouTube artist Boyinaband launches new LGBT music video

YouTube artist Boyinaband has released a new music video, Spectrum, which focuses on young LGBT people and the issues they may face when coming out and dealing with their sexual identity.

Boyinaband

THE video is a joint project with somewhereto_ a UK wide charity which offers young people aged 16-25 access to free spaces in their communities to pursue creative and enterprising endeavours. Boyinaband, AKA David Brown, is an ambassador for the charity, which sourced and provided the location for the video.

Directed by Creative Director & Producer Mike Buonaiuto, the narrative of Spectrum features two stories of young people struggling to explore and understand their sexual identity. In one scene a girl hides her relationship with her girlfriend from her mother fearing she may be kicked out of the family home.  In another scene a young man sits alone at a bus stop seeking help and advice online. He appears to have experienced physical abuse.

THE event, which will take place on Saturday, October 31, will be raising funds for The Sussex Beacon – a Brighton based charity offering specialist care and support to men, women and families affected by HIV.

The theme of the evening, which also takes place at the Grand Hotel Brighton, was revealed as Haunted Hollywood and organisers announced that half the tables had already been sold for the main event in October. However, the identity of the host, who will play the role of an old film director, remains a closely guarded secret.

During the launch, guests heard the testimony of a HIV positive woman who has benefited from The Sussex Beacon’s services.

Simon Dowe, CEO at The Sussex Beacon, said: “Hearing about the impact that a positive HIV diagnoses can have on a person’s life from someone who has experienced it is a powerful message. At The Sussex Beacon we work to support people affected by HIV physically, emotionally and socially to help them live independent and healthy lives”.

Haunted Halloween

The Halloween Horror Show 2015 will help The Sussex Beacon to raise the 1.2million pounds it needs to keep its services running. Guests of the main event will enjoy a night of entertainment whilst tucking in to a three-course Grand Halloween feast followed by dancing until the early hours.

The launch party was attended by the Mayor Elect of Brighton and Hove, Cllr Lynda Hyde, as well as representatives from many local businesses in the city. Guests enjoyed a sneak preview of the events’ entertainment, plus drinks and canapés.

The Sussex Beacon is working with leading entertainment design agency the E3 Group to produce the fundraising Ball. The E3 Group were responsible for the production of last year’s event which raised over £20,000 for the charity.

such as this one”

Labour launch ‘youth pledge’

New research has identified the key election issues for hundreds of young people in Brighton, Hove and Peacehaven leading to the three local Labour parliamentary candidates launching their ‘youth pledge’ on Brighton’s seafront this week.

WEB.600

WHILE creating more affordable higher education was the number one concern raised by young people, others included a much broader range of subjects – shared with the wider population.

Fighting for a Living Wage, secure full-time jobs, better rental properties and cheaper public transport made up the rest of the top five issues young people said need tackling.

The creation of more apprenticeships and training opportunities as well as dealing with climate change also featured prominently in the priorities of young voters.

Nancy Platts, Labour’s candidate in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, said: “Making higher education more affordable and continuing to campaign for a living wage is absolutely vital to ensure we have an economic recovery that works for the many, not just the millionaires David Cameron has given a tax cut to.

“I also want to see fare caps to ensure cheaper public transport and if elected I will be voting for better quality rental properties with predictable rents and a ban on rip-off letting agents fees.

“Labour has also pledged to create more full-time jobs, ban zero hours contracts and establish more apprenticeships for young people.”

Peter Kyle, Labour’s candidate for Hove and Portslade, added: “Having greater ambition for the next generation is at the heart of Labour’s vision for our city and our pledges are a firm commitment to delivering on behalf of young people living locally”

Purna Sen, Labour’s candidate for Brighton Pavilion, concluded saying: “Throughout my campaign I’ve been impressed again and again by the really strong interest expressed by young people in all the important issues facing our city and the country. Labour felt it was important to ask young people in Brighton and Hove about their hopes and concerns. I know Labour has the policies to address these vital issues – jobs, housing, education and transport – which local young people have told us matter to them.”

A leading men’s health charity and NHS join forces for safer chemsex campaign

Leading men’s health charity and NHS join forces for safer chemsex campaign.

GMFA

GMFA, the leading gay men’s health organisation, and Burrell Street Sexual Health Clinic, the largest and most comprehensive NHS sexual health service in London, are joining forces to give gay men advice to make their chems use safer.

The number of gay men using drugs while having sex, particularly G, mephedrone and crystal meth, has increased in recent years.  These drugs lower inhibitions, enhance sexual arousal and are mostly cheap and easy to get, often leading to sexual risk-taking.

When misused or dosed incorrectly, these drugs can be harmful to gay men’s physical, sexual and mental health. This is why GMFA and Burrell Street are launching Safer Chems – a campaign and web resource to reduce the harms of chemsex.

The new campaign will provide information on safer dosing, safer sex, advice on how to stay in control of your sex life, how to deal with an emergency, and advice on PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis).

A recent report by the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs found that campaigns intended to stop people taking drugs were not effective and, in some cases, increased the chance of people taking drugs.

“What we wanted to do is present something different to the ‘just say no’ style of campaigns that are out there” says GMFA’s Campaigns Manager, Liam Murphy.  “Someone who is having chemsex but still managing to maintain a career, friendships and a ‘normal’ life outside of their weekend fun, may not identify with that message of danger. We wanted to create a web resource that chemsexers can go to (to) get more information about what they’re doing and make an informed decision about their own sex life and drug use. We want gay men to enjoy their sex life the way they want but to also show it may affect their physical, sexual and mental health in the long-term. The campaign provides guidance to help men reduce their risks as well as support for men who want to cut down or stop their drug use.”

Senior Sexual Health Promotion Specialist at Burrell Street Clinic, Vicki Kirby, explains why they wanted to get involved with the campaign: “Burrell Street is seeing a huge increase in the numbers of gay men seeking PEP. This is attributed to the use of drugs such as GHB, mephedrone and crystal meth. These drugs can cause a loss of inhibitions, memory loss and even black-outs. Users are not always able to negotiate safer sex and some do not remember what kind of sex they have had. Burrell Street takes a realistic approach to the fact that chemsex is part of some men’s lives, and that harm reduction messages are essential. GMFA have a broad reach into the gay community and a strong social media presence which makes them the ideal organisation to partner up with to promote factual, unbiased messages relating to chemsex.”

The campaign already has the backing of many saunas and clubs – places where drug overdoses have been reported in recent months – with many venues now carrying promotional materials.

Come on Boys – show us your balls!

Brighton Big Balls is back to protect those man parts.

Brighton BIg Balls

NOW in its third year, Brighton’s premier comedy run returns on May 10 in aid of male cancer charity Orchid.

Featuring in this comedy caper of a race is celebrity Norman Cook aka Fat Boy Slim who will be cheered on by wife Zoe Ball and family. \

Keeping it in the family; TV legend Johnny Ball will be on hand to start the competition at 12 noon, alongside Fat Boy Slim’s Big Beach Cafe at Hove Lagoon.

The event sees entrants stumble over the pebble beaches, groynes and man-made comedy obstacles whilst carrying two large gym balls under their arms.

The race number on the entrants hand matches the number on their balls and they must finish with their own balls. Apart from that – there are no rules! So chaos automatically ensues!

Dave Samuel, organiser and Brighton Big Balls big chief, said: “It’s only a short distance so a great event for everyone to get involved in. You don’t have to be particular fit to take part – laughing seems to be more the order of the day than running for this comedy-exercise”

Brighton Big Balls has a loyal and increasing fan base as it’s also become a spectator sport too with celebrity followers on social media helping to spread the word.

Although clearly aimed at men, lots of women also take part to show support. However ladies are being asked to wear a comedy moustache and run in a manly-manner. The female competitors even have their own competition for the best moustache of the day.

The Race commences at 12 noon from Hove Lagoon and runs to the King Alfred leisure Centre and back.

Registration is online and costs £25. Entrants are then expected to raise sponsorship via the charity just-giving page.

Labour council leader welcomes ‘policing pledge’

Councillor Warren Morgan, Leader of the Labour and Co-operative Group on Brighton and Hove City Council, has welcomed a national Labour pledge to protect neighbourhood policing.

Cllr Warren Morgan
Cllr Warren Morgan

IF elected in May, Labour will introduce a new ‘Local Policing Commitment’, which makes sure police forces guarantee neighbourhood policing in every area.

Cllr Morgan said: “I spent four years working for Sussex Police, and almost a decade chairing the crime prevention forum in my ward, so I know how important neighbourhood policing is. Across Brighton and Hove our PCSOs are valued by local communities as are our local PCs and Sergeants for their local knowledge and commitment. It’s vital that we vote to protect our local police from Tory cuts.”

Labour will set out £800 million worth of efficiency savings a year to enable Chief Constables to safeguard over 10,000 police officers from cuts scheduled by the Conservative Government. The savings – all of which have been ruled out by the Tories – include scrapping police and crime commissioners and halving the cost of police governance; ending the police subsidy of gun licenses; mandating joint procurement and sharing support services.

Labour say the Tories plan to cut over a thousand officers in Sussex in the next five years, hitting neighbourhood policing and leading to warnings from the independent policing inspectorate and from Chief Constables about the future of the police.

Bristol Pride launch ‘Crowdfunder’ initiative

Organisers of Bristol Pride call on people to financially support the event in 2015.

Bristol Pride 2014

BRISTOL Pride have launched a Crowdfunder to support the  2015 event and are calling on those that are passionate about keeping a Pride event in the city to pledge their support.

Running until May 14 the team hopes the Crowdfunder will raise well over the minimum £5000 to support the infrastructure costs needed to stage the festival, which costs over £100,000 to put on.

Bristol Pride, which last year was voted No 2 Best Pride in the UK (Coop Respect Awards), runs for over a week across the city and culminates in a massive free outdoor community music and performance festival.

Pride uses the arts to champion equality and tackle issues affecting the community whilst developing a platform to support LGBT and local talent.

In 2015 the festival brought in over 31,000 people to its events, and in 2013 boosted the local economy by £953,000, but organisers were unsuccessful at being awarded Key Arts Provider funding for the city which would have helped secure the event for the next 3 years.

With grant sources dwindling and costs increasing the team are asking the public to pledge their support for Pride which has become one of the highlights in the city events calendar for many locals and visitors alike.

Rewards include Pride Festival supporter wristbands including a gold pass to all the events during the week, festival tickets donated by Love Saves The Day, Green Gathering and Sunrise Festival, tickets to Bristol Zoo and special prints of the rainbow fireworks over Clifton Suspension Bridge for the 150th anniversary.

The Crowdfunder also offer festival sponsorship and opportunities for small businesses keen to support Pride and equality in the city whilst benefiting from the wealth of marketing on offer.

Daryn Carter
Daryn Carter

Organiser Daryn Carter, said: “Pride is a vital and fantastic event for the city but we need support to be able to keep delivering the event. We’re one of the biggest Pride’s in the UK and Crowdfunding is a chance to support us to deliver both the festival and the week of events around it. We’re offering a range of rewards including our festival supporter wristbands which offer discounts on the day of the festival including money off food, bars and free travel on the day with First Bus in Bristol.

“We want to continue to deliver an event that is open to everyone, that has a week of events surrounding it and has things like the parade and community area which all cost money to include. People’s support also enables us to continue the work we do throughout the year to tackle discrimination, such as visits to schools and universities, raising awareness, combating hate crime and events to support the most marginalised within the community.”
