‘Tackle Homophobia’ in Football

Twenty-two teams from across Sussex lined up for the fifth annual Tackle Homophobia Football Tournament last Saturday, in association with Sussex Clubs for Young People.

Tackle Homophobia

MORE than 140 young people from across Sussex battled it out at the Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford, in the spring sunshine, attempting to be crowned Sussex 5-a-side Champions.

Teams from Seaford and Peacehaven successfully won their respective age groups in a fierce but friendly competition.

The tournament was organised as part of the Tackle Homophobia Project, a partnership between Mercread Youth Centre, The Justin Campaign and Albion in the Community, which works with young people across the Lewes District to raise awareness and challenge homophobia.

Project Coordinator Sam Whittaker said: “With ever-present discussions regarding discrimination in football, it is important that we continue to proactively address all forms of inequality both on and off the pitch. We passionately believe that young people should be free to enjoy all aspects of their lives in a positive, safe and discrimination-free environment. This weekend’s tournament shows incredible support from local young people and youth organisations, including schools, youth clubs and football teams, joining together to help bring an end to homophobia in football.”

The project, now in its fifth year, has directly engaged with over 1,300 individual young people through the delivery of educational workshops and weekly football sessions.

Tackle Homophobia has received support from a wide range of organisations, and was showcased at the FA Equality Conference held earlier this year at Wembley Football Stadium.

PREVIEW: ‘Light Up The Night’

Three stunning singers with three stunning voices, Charlotte Jaconelli, Daniel Koek and Jai McDowall, will sing sensational hits from stage, screen and the charts!

Light up the night

BRITISH soprano Charlotte Jaconelli teams up here with Australian tenor Daniel Koek, one of musical theatre’s brightest stars, and Britain’s Got Talent Winner Jai McDowall for an amazing live show: Light Up the Night.

Charlotte shot to fame on Britain’s Got Talent as half of Jonathan and Charlotte, the duo that won the nation’s heart after Jonathon ignored Simon Cowell’s advice to go forward as a solo singer. He chose to remain in the competition as a duo with Charlotte and they went on to come second to Pudsey the dog.

Last year Charlotte released her solo album Solitaire, which fired this engaging young singer into the great British tradition of artists such as Katherine Jenkins and Sarah Brightman.

Daniel Koek is firmly established as one of music theatre’s leading men with a catalogue of roles to his name. Apart from his runaway success playing Jean Valjean in Les Misérables in London’s West End, recently he has played Tony in the 50th anniversary production of West Side Story and Anatoly Sergievsky in Craig Revel Horwood’s award-winning production of Chess, which toured the UK and Italy. He then went on to perform Lt Cable in the Lincoln Centre Production of South Pacific that premiered at the Barbican in London. Daniel has been working on his new solo album High to be released in April.

Jai MacDowall rose to fame when he won the fifth series of Britain’s Got Talent in June 2011. After winning he performed on the Britain’s Got Talent Tour and went on to perform at the 2011 Royal Variety Performance. He has since performed on the live final of China’s Got Talent, performed at the Queen’s Jubilee, and headlined his own Scottish tour. His debut album Believe was released in December 2011 and he is currently recording the follow-up for release this year.

Light Up The Night features songs from Phantom, Les Misérables, West Side Story, James Bond, Moulin Rouge and much more.

Toolkit for nurses to prevent suicide in LGB young people

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN), in collaboration with Public Health England (PHE), launch a toolkit to guide nurses and other health professionals in the prevention of suicide in lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) young people.

METROTHE toolkit has been developed in recognition of the higher risk of suicide for LGB young people highlighted by METRO Youth Chances research. It aims to equip nurses to support  LGB young people and reduce the risk of suicide.

Dr Greg Ussher
Dr Greg Ussher

Dr Greg Ussher METRO Chief Executive, said: “We welcome this initiative from the RCN and PHE to help reduce the frighteningly high risk of suicide for LGB young people and those questioning their sexuality (LGBQ).  We work with young people everyday who are struggling with their sexual identity and the effects of homophobia and biphobia. It is the very reason we undertook our Youth Chances research, which the RCN recognises in its report.”

“METRO Youth Chances highlights the massively increased rates of mental health problems for LGBQ young people including increased risk of depression, suicidal thoughts and self-harm. 44% of LGB young people report thinking of suicide and half self-harm. The rates for trans young people are even higher.

“Urgent action is needed to attend to this crisis. We urge  professional bodies, commissioners, central and local government and service providers to use the evidence from METRO Youth Chances to make a difference to the lives of LGBQ and trans (LGBTQ) young people. The RCN toolkit is an example of how this can be done.

“We look forward to the development of the RCN toolkit for preventing suicide for trans young people. We hope that the mental health needs of LGBTQ young people are addressed in the report of the Department of Health’s Children and Young People’s Mental Health Taskforce later this month.”

Kemptown MP speaks out for access to HIV treatment in low and middle income nations

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, used a Westminster Hall debate to speak out for improved access to HIV treatments in Low and Middle Income Nations.

DURING a parliamentary debate on the topic, Mr Kirby, spoke out for improved access to HIV treatments in Low and Middle Income Nations.

He explained that as the majority of people living with HIV moves from low to medium income countries, the ease of access to medication is changing. Ultimately this means, there needs to be a different approach to responding to AIDS.

Just as the cost for treating HIV/AIDS is increasing, foreign Governments and donors have withdrawn funding from some middle income countries.

Mr Kirby argued that there needs to be a new approach to funding treatment in poorer countries, focusing not on the wealth of the country, but the extent of the problem.

He also highlighted how crucial it is that HIV prevention remains firmly on the political agenda so that it is not overlooked in the future, as well as the importance of combatting the social factors linked to HIV transmission, such as stigma and discrimination, and that we must break down social barriers preventing people from accessing HIV testing and prevention services.

Mr Kirby said: “I joined the all-party group on HIV and AIDS nearly five years ago, and I am proud to now serve as the vice chair. A common misconception is that HIV is a thing of the past, and I am working hard to make sure that this is not the feeling held within Westminster. We need to take a new approach to combating HIV throughout the world, and I was delighted to speak out on this very important matter.”

Labour announce line-up of candidates for May elections

A week after publishing its manifesto, A Council That Works For You, Labour has chosen its team of candidates to contest the local elections in Brighton and Hove on May 7.

Cllr Warren Morgan
Cllr Warren Morgan

HALF of the candidates selected are women; a quarter are experienced councillors, and three-quarters are new to politics.

10% of the candidates are drawn from the city’s LGBT communities and there is also representation from the BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) community. Several candidates are in their twenties.

Councillor Warren Morgan, Leader of the Labour and Co-operative Group, said: “I’m proud to be leading such a strong team into the local elections, a team of local residents who will bring knowledge of their neighbourhoods and a wide range of skills and experience to the city council. We have people in our team with proven records in delivering major projects, employment and skills, the NHS, education, voluntary sector organisations and more who will run our city competently if elected on May 7th.”

He added: “With the General Election on the same day, a vote for your local Labour council candidates will count in each and every one of the city’s 21 wards. Labour is best placed in the vast majority of them to defeat Green and Conservative councillors. We have won the last four elections held in the city, and only Labour can get rid of the Greens.”

At the last local elections in May 2011, Labour was in first or second place in 18 of the 21 wards, had near-equal support to the Green Party, winning 32% of the vote, just less than the Greens and 3% more than the Conservatives.

Labour has taken the largest percentage of the vote in Brighton and Hove at the four most recent elections.

• May 2012: Police and Crime Commissioner, Labour took 61% of the vote in the city.

• October 2012: East Brighton by-election, Labour took 56% of the vote in the city.

• July 2013: Hanover and Elm Grove by-election, Labour took 40% of the vote in the city, overturning a 1,000-vote Green majority.

• May 2014: European Elections, Labour took 20,000 votes in the city to 18,000 for the Green Party, 15,000 for Tories and 14,000 for UKIP.

AMERICAN EXPRESS® becomes Gold Partner of Brighton Pride 2015

American Express, the City’s largest private sector employer, has become the Gold Partner of Brighton Pride 2015, which will take place on the weekend of August 1-2, 2015.

Amex Brigton Pride 2014

THE Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community event, the UK’s biggest Pride festival, is a spectacular showcase of Brighton’s diverse communities. This year it marks its 25th anniversary in the city and is expected to attract huge numbers of participants and spectators from across Sussex.

As in previous years, American Express will be entering a float in the LGBT Community Pride Parade. Employees (including members of the company’s award-winning Pride UK LGBT employee network) will be on board, getting into the carnival spirit and lining the route with family members and friends.

Mike Whyte, Vice President, Merchant Services of American Express, said: “We are immensely proud to be continuing our partnership with Brighton Pride and we’re looking forward to celebrating their 25 years of incredible work, raising awareness and funds for the LGBT community.”

The financial services company is a proud supporter of the LGBT community. A Stonewall 2015 Workplace Equality Index Top 100 Employer, the American Express Pride employee network was recently named Stonewall Network Group of the Year (2015), in recognition of its work promoting diversity and inclusion both inside the organisation and within the local community.

Paul Kemp, of the Brighton Pride Community Interest Company, said: “An annual Pride event has been part of the summer landscape in Brighton and Hove since 1991. 25 years on, there has never been a more exciting time to be involved with Pride.

“We are delighted that American Express is again on board and as a Gold Partner this year. Support from partners is crucial to deliver what has become one of our City’s most lively and best-attended events and as such, achieves significant fundraising targets that make a huge difference to local LGBT causes.”

2014’s Brighton Pride raised a record breaking £64,000 for LGBT groups in Brighton and Hove. Beneficiaries included the Allsorts Youth Project, Lunch Positive, Peer Action, Brighton and Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum, MindOut, Peer Action, GEMS, Sussex Beacon, LGBT Switchboard and the Clare Project.

Reverbathon smashes previous fundraising figures

RadioReverb, the independent community radio station, has once again staged a successful fund-raising weekend to benefit its finances.

RadioReverb

IN a mammoth 52 hours of non-stop live broadcasting to celebrate eight years on the air, the station has so far raised almost £3,000 over the Reverbathon weekend, a substantial increase on the £2,000 raised last year.

Programmers say the amount raised reflects the desire of residents, listeners and local businesses who want to keep RadioReverb ad-free and independent.

This year’s Reverbathon, which was trending on social media last week and throughout the weekend, saw rap battles between DJs, live music from local bands and a day of female-led shows during International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8.

RadioReverb is run entirely by volunteers and all money raised goes directly back into the running of the station, upgrading equipment and giving an opportunity to bring in new shows and new local voices.

Melita Dennett, Chair of RadioReverb, said: “These are challenging times for community radio, but RadioReverb continues to thrive because we are all about Brighton and Hove, and listeners and sponsors know that. Our volunteers are also committed, highly professional and great ambassadors for a radio station that holds Brighton and Hove at the very heart of what we do.”

The station is still receiving donations following the success of the Reverbathon.

COUNCILLOR Sue Shanks, the party’s election coordinator, is the Chair of the Children and Young People Committee and is standing again in Withdean.

“It is very refreshing to see a variety of backgrounds in an age of professional career politicians. Our candidates bring professional expertise and real-world experience which is sorely needed in both local and national government. They include education professionals such as teachers and youth workers, recognised experts in housing, the environment and animal rights, care workers who have seen the government’s assault on the care services at first hand, people working in the arts and a number of successful and sometimes prominent local business leaders, not to mention two former Labour Party councillors.

“It’s equally refreshing to see a variety of ages and personal circumstances, with both elders and younger people represented and, quite unusually for councillors other than Greens, people with young families and parents of children who use our children’s centres and attend our local schools.”
