Thousands of runners celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon

Despite the threat of bad weather, the rain held off for today’s Vitality Brighton Half Marathon, bringing thousands of people onto the streets of the city to support the 15,000 runners and celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 13.1 mile race, which is run around the city’s landmark sights.

Brighton Half Marathon

THE RACE IS ORGANISED by The Sussex Beacon, a charity which provides a range of services for men, women and families living with or affected by HIV across Sussex. This year’s race field was the largest in the event’s 25-year history, with many local, national and international runners in the race.

Celebrity runners in the race included Gethin Jones for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, while runner George Frogley celebrated his 80th birthday, sporting the race number 80 and running with his daughter.

The race started in 1990 as a small event involving around 200 runners from local athletic clubs and has become an established event for those training for a Spring marathon. To mark the milestone year, all runners finishing the event this year received a special 25th anniversary commemorative medal.

Race Director Martin Harrigan said: “It’s been a brilliant day for running in Brighton today and the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon 2015 has been a huge success. Congratulations to Paul and Julia, to our amazing Youth Race runners and to every runner who laced up their running shoes this morning to join us in celebrating our 25th anniversary race.

“A big thank you also goes to our sponsors, partners, supporters and volunteers, and to everyone who contributed to the success of the 2015 race. Here’s to another 25 years!”

Simon Dowe, CEO of The Sussex Beacon, added: “The Sussex Beacon has been the organiser of the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon since the early days of the race and we are proud to deliver one of the most popular events in the running calendar. The event provides our charity with valuable income that allows us to run vital services for people affected by HIV. The event also provides significant fundraising opportunities for our many charity partners.”

Headline sponsor Vitality was new to this year’s race, which now forms part of the Vitality Run Series, a series of seven leading half marathons and one 10-kilometre race (the 10K London Run) in the UK.

Partners for the 2015 race included Vitality, Nick Rivett Sport, Russell New, Aftershokz, FlipBelt, Visit Brighton, Brighton and Hove City Council and Studio57 Clinic.

SALTDEAN Lido Community Interest Company (CIC) will immediately receive £576,000 for development funding with the further £4.2 million being awarded later in the year.

This funding stream, coupled with the recent £2.5 million Government investment from the Coastal Communities Fund, means that the Saltdean Lido is even closer to being fully reopened.

Mr Kirby has been a long-time supporter of the CIC’s campaign to restore the Lido, and has been an active and vocal champion of the project.

Speaking about the announcement, a happy Mr Kirby said: “I am absolutely delighted that the Saltdean Lido CIC has received this £4.7 million in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“This really is fantastic news for all of the people in Saltdean and the local area, as it means that the campaign has taken one huge step forward. I know that a thriving Lido will be a massive boost for the community, and I look forward to it becoming as soon as possible a community facility for people to enjoy once more.”

Hove MP Weatherley secures adjournment debate on cancer

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade and a cancer survivor, has secured an adjournment debate on oesophageal cancer which will take place on Monday, February 23.

IN the debate Mike will describe his personal fight against cancer and suggests seven improvement steps for the NHS.

The two principal outcomes that Mike is hoping to achieve are:

• Increased awareness of oesophageal cancer will be increased

• A commitment to additional resources, chiefly in order to fund a quicker, more efficient diagnostic procedure.

Mike, who was first elected to Parliament in 2010, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2012 and underwent surgery to have his entire oesophagus (and part of his stomach) removed.

Following months of intense treatment after the operation, Mike’s cancer went into full remission (tests and scans thankfully showing no current signs of remaining disease).

Mike said: “My father said to me that being born in the UK is like winning the lottery of life. He was completely right and I am alive today because of our wonderful NHS. I wanted to have this debate in Parliament to highlight the devastating impact that oesophageal cancer has on people across the country, but also to demonstrate as living proof that the healthcare in this country is worth every penny.”

He added: “While the NHS does a fantastic job treating cancer patients, more can be done to improve the services that are available. I have seven improvements that I am recommending to the Department for Health.”

Mike will not be seeking re-election to Parliament in May.

Give local services a fighting chance: Labour issue budget challenge to other parties

Labour fight to stop savage cuts to the Pride Parade, the Mayoralty and the Women’s Refuge.

Cllr Warren Morgan: Leader of Labour and Cooperative, Brighotn and Hove City Council
Cllr Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour and Co-operative group, Brighton and Hove City Council

THE Labour group on the city council are challenging the Greens and Tories to put aside party politics and unite around a budget that is best for Brighton and Hove at the annual Council meeting to set the budget on Thursday, February 26.

Issuing the challenge, Councillor Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour and Co-operative group, said: “Our proposals would set the council tax at a 1.9% increase that people can afford, freeze all parking charges for 12 months, keep all children’s centre services running for another year, and maintain funding for voluntary groups. I am urging the Greens and Tories to back this positive compromise to give the new council to be elected in May, and the services residents rely on, a fighting chance.”

Labour’s proposals would also scrap the Greens’ One Planet Living team and use the funding to keep public toilets open. Money would be taken from the Communications budget to support the Mayor’s community and charity work, currently under threat.

Councillor Morgan added: “The Green referendum proposal and the Tory freeze plan would each mean a loss of another £1m from council services, which we think is better spent in the community on things residents need. Voters can elect a new council in May, but for now we should put the city first.”

Labour proposals will restore all the money being cut from women’s refuge funding, half of the money being cut from Able and Willing, the council’s design and print service which employs people with learning disabilities, and a small grant to help the summer Pride parade develop as an international tourist attraction to bring visitors to the city.
