Labour Candidate for Brighton Pavilion, calls for action on Equal Pay

Purna Sen, Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Pavilion, is calling for immediate Government action on Equal Pay.

Purna has written to Business Secretary Vince Cable calling on the government to take action on equal pay for women.

Purna said: “On December 16, MPs overwhelmingly backed calls led by Labour MPs for measures on pay transparency that would see big companies (with over 250 staff) required to publish their gender pay gap. However the Government has so-far refused to implement it.

“Nationally women are still earning on average 81p for every pound a man earns, leaving themselves and their families poorer.

“In Brighton and Hove there are over four and a half thousand single working mothers, many of whom will be among the local women affected by this inequality.

“The measure is supported by leading employers including Price Waterhouse Coopers who are one of just 5 companies known to voluntarily publish the information.

“The proposal comes back to Parliament on February 27 when Tories and Lib Dems will next have an opportunity to support pay transparency. But I’ve written to the Business Secretary calling on him to support Equal Pay now and get on with implementing pay transparency.

“Pay transparency will encourage firms to take action on the pay gap. Labour MPs are taking the lead on this issue in Parliament and if the Coalition refuses to take action Labour has pledged that the next Labour government will.”

Labour in Brighton and Hove pledge to end youth unemployment in the city

The Labour and Co-operative Party in Brighton and Hove today unveiled plans to tackle and end youth unemployment locally if they have a clear majority on the City Council after the local elections in May.

OPPORTUNITIES for young people will come through major hospital, retail, construction and event developments planned in the city.

Shadow Secretary of State for Education, Tristram Hunt MP joined Cllr Warren Morgan, Leader of the Labour and Co-operative group on the City Council and Peter Kyle the Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Hove & Portslade at this mornings launch event at the Hangleton and Knoll Project in St Richard Community Centre in Hangleton.

Leader of the Labour and Co-operative Group, Councillor Warren Morgan, said: “We believe every young person in this city deserves our support in getting a start on the way to a secure, well-paid career. That’s why we are pledging, if elected to run the council in May, to end youth unemployment by the end of the four year council term in 2019.”

“Getting young people into full-time training or paid apprenticeships at the Living Wage and providing encouragement and incentives to employers and developers in the city will be one of our main goals as an administration. Giving young people the opportunity and support to succeed benefits not just them as individuals but their families, communities and the city as a whole.”

Peter Kyle, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate in Hove and Portslade, added: “It’s shocking that our city has hundreds of young people who are claiming Job Seeker Allowance and dozens who have been unemployed for more than a year. A long period of unemployment for a young person can have a terrible impact on their ability to succeed later in life.”

“Our society and economy also suffers due to the social impact on our communities and wasted potential. Something has to be done. By taking these steps we will ensure that every young person has the start in life that they deserve.”

DURING the meeting he pressed, among other issues, for improvements to the condition of roads and pavements, and highlighted the shortage of post-16 education in Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs.

Mr Kirby claims the condition of roads and pavements are of particular concern to many of the people living in Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs, and is an issue that he has regularly pressed the Council over.

During the meeting Simon asked what the Council would be doing to resolve the amount of traffic on the South Coast Road, and pushed for a Council Tax freeze for the next 12 months.

Finally, whilst raising post-16 education provision, Mr Kirby also pushed for improvements to the local primary schools.

Mr Kirby said: “I was delighted to be able to meet with Becky Shaw, and to have the opportunity to make her aware of some of the main concerns that the people of Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs have.

“I am proud to represent Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs, although I am aware that many constituents would like to see improvements in areas such as roads, traffic and education, which is why I took these directly to the Chief Executive.

“I look forward to seeing progress made on each of these points over the next few months, and I will work hard to make sure that these remain firmly on the Council’s agenda.”

THE Handbags, Hats & Heels sale and auction will take place on Wednesday, February 11, at the Sussex County Cricket Club, and the hunt is on for all styles of handbags, hats and shoes which will help raise money for the hospice.

The local charity has already received a variety of beautiful donations, including handbags from well-known brands such as Radley, Coast, Nine West, Zara and Julian McDonald.

In addition, several local businesses have also contributed items, including a Mulberry Mabel bag donated by Preloved of Brighton; a stylish pair of royal blue Audley Shoes donated by Mo Brog; and Lewes based milliners Lomax and Skinner have donated a flowered and feathered cocktail piece.

However, many more items are needed for the auction, and the organisers hope that the women of Brighton & Hove will help by clearing out their wardrobes and donating their unwanted bags and shoes to be auctioned off and sent to new loving homes.

Antonia Shepherd, Events Manager for the Martlets, said: “We’ve all got accessories languishing in the back of our wardrobe. From those pretty shoes brought for a special occasion and which haven’t been worn again since, to a gorgeous handbag which perhaps isn’t quite big enough for day to day life anymore – so why not dig them out and help your local hospice.”

Handbags, hats and heels can be donated at special donation boxes found around Brighton, including within Churchill Square shopping centre. Other locations include any of the Martlets’ shops in and around the city and the Hospice itself in Wayfield Avenue, Hove.

Antonia continued: “And if any other local fashion stores wish to make a donation, we’d be really grateful for new items too. Businesses can contact us on 01273 747455 and we can arrange collection.”

All the money raised from the sale and auction will go towards the Martlets’ work caring for adults living in and around Brighton & Hove who are affected by terminal illness.

The Martlets Hospice in Hove provides end of life care services to adults with terminal illness including cancer.  Hospice facilities comprise of an 18 bed InPatient Unit, a Hospice at Home Service, and Day Services for patients and their carers.
