PREVIEW: Human League Alternate Universe Tour comes to Brighton

Exactly 33 years since their greatest hit of all time The Human League are performing at the Brighton Centre on Friday, December 12.

Human League

THE HUMAN LEAGUE, one of the most influential pop groups of all time, are undertaking the Alternate Universe (AU) Tour – a 14-night nationwide tour of the UK at the end of this year.

The AU Tour hot-foots off the back of the band’s chart hit earlier this year when Don’t You Want Me re-entered the UK Top 20 following mammoth public demand from a social media campaign.

Comprising of long-standing band members, Phil Oakley, Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley, the tour highlights the influence and popularity of The Human League and follows public demand for them expressed in a social media campaign earlier this year which resulted in the re-release of Don’t You Want Me Baby.

The AU Tour is significantly timed, kicking-off exactly 33-years to the day since The Human League released their best-known and most commercially successful hit, Don’t You Want Me. In 1981, the track became Britain’s Christmas No1, remaining the most successful Christmas hit ever and has since sold over 1,560,000 copies, making it the 23rd most successful single in UK Singles Chart history.  It later topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the US on July 3, 1982, where it stayed for an impressive three weeks.

The Human League have had four Top 10 albums and eight Top 10 singles in the UK; as well as two US Number 1 singles and have sold 20 million records Worldwide.

The avant-garde synthesizer based band are still pioneering the current sound in the music charts to such an extent that a new generation of synth-driven female pop artists have been labeled as the ‘L’ girls.

La Roux is a known admirer of the electro pioneers, while Little Boots is such a fan that she requested Philip Oakey’s input on her debut album. Even Lady Gaga is openly proud to be a professed devotee.

Spanning five-decades of chart history, The Human League are masters of musical and cultural influence; laying powerful past foundations whilst simultaneously forming the shape of ground breaking current and future talent.

Our Brighton Hippodrome campaign group claim financial report was withheld from city councillors

The community group who are campaigning to save the Brighton Hippodrome as a venue for live theatre have added a new page to their website.

Brighton Hippodrome

THE PAGE details what campaigners consider to be shortcomings in the way Brighton and Hove City Council has handled the prospects for the Hippodrome’s future.

Campaigners allege among other things that information they provided to council officers was withheld from city councillors.

The District Valuer produced a report for Brighton and Hove City Council claiming a theatre at the Hippodrome would lose £249,890 a year.

This assertion was based on figures supplied by the developer showing that only a cinema would be viable.

Our Brighton Hippodrome campaigners submitted a detailed analysis of the developer’s report but this was withheld from the District Valuer and from elected members explicitly because Our Brighton Hippodrome is a community group.

A Brighton and Hove Council spokeswoman quoted the District Valuer’s report in a recent press statement as confirmation that a theatre “was unlikely to be viable”.

Campaigners say this is “complete nonsense”, claiming the calculations were based on a much smaller theatre than envisaged, on seat occupancy less than half the national average for regional touring theatres and an average ticket price well below a realistic average.

Substituting more reasonable and reliable figures in their financial model produces a profit of £2.5m.

The detailed business plan produced by Our Hiuppodrome Brighton shows that the likely annual net balance would be in the region of £1.7m more than enough to show that theatre would flourish at the Hippodrome.

Surprise Welephant cake for Hove firefighters

Firefighters in Hove received an unexpected treat recently when a local resident dropped in with a home-baked Welephant cake to support them in the campaign to save their fire engine.

Hove Firefighters

Hove firefighter and Chair of East Sussex FBU Simon Herbert, said: “Our campaign to save our fire engine continues to grow and this was a lovely way for a member of the public to show their support. Local firefighters really appreciate such gestures and we want to thank everyone who has joined our campaign so far. We remain concerned that a reduction in the number of fire engines from five to just four, will increase risk to public safety and we will continue to call for this decision to be reversed.”

Welephant, who ate an exceptionally large slice of the cake, said: “I love cake and carrot cake is my absolute favourite…..although i am trying to watch my waist line.”
