PREVIEW: Hay Fever at NVT

Gerry McCrudden’s production of Noel Coward’s Hay Fever opens at the NVT Theatre Upstairs on Friday, October 31 and runs until Saturday, November 8.

Hay Fever

Noel Coward self-deprecatingly said of his delicious comedy “it has no plot at all, and remarkably little action.” Despite his protestations it is considered one of his funniest plays and a personal favourite of his.

The Blisses are by any measure a tad eccentric and avant-garde. Without mentioning it to each other David Bliss, a novelist, his wife Judith, a retired actress, their son Simon and daughter Sorel each invite a weekend guest to stay. Misunderstandings and tempers flare as Judith’s new flame and David’s newest literary ‘inspiration’ keep company. Their children and their amours follow suit. The Bliss family’s weekend inevitability comes to an exhausting and hilarious finale.

Coward penned Hay Fever in 1924. It set the seal on his reputation as a playwright and established him as a craftsman.

He later wrote: “The idea came to me suddenly in the garden, and I finished it in about three days, a feat which later on, when I had become news value, seemed to excite gossip writers inordinately .” Laurence Olivier applied for a part in the touring version but did not get that call back.

Fit for a Queen!

Ceri Dupree reigns supreme.

Ceri Dupree

An evening out in the company of Ceri Dupree and “the ladies he loves” guarantees a night of showbiz glamour and entertainment. A return to the good old days when entertainers learnt their craft and could single-handedly hold the attention of an audience for a full evening.

Ceri Dupree is not a mere drag queen. He is the full package. An actor, comedian, singer and all round entertainer. A fabulous gender illusionist who recreates his characters on the stage in front of you. His attention to detail is legendary and you know that when you step out for a night with Ceri Dupree you are in the company of someone who remains at the very top of his game after more than 30 years in show business.

Ceri DupreeWhen did you first pull on a dress? Cannot pinpoint it exactly… probably the Palace nightclub, Swansea, circa 81/82… That’s 1981, not 1881… I’m not Maisie! lol…

Who is your current favourite character? My favourite character at the moment is Hilary Devey of Dragons’ Den fame. She works better in a cabaret situation rather than in a theatre appearance, hence she is not in this current theatre tour. Ten years ago I would have said Camilla Parker-Bowles was my favourite. I did her in riding gear with a crop. The audience loved her and still do and I’m currently on riding outfit number four with her.

What should we expect in this year’s show? I don’t want to give too much away but I am resurrecting some characters that I have not done for many years. The first half of the show features women from all over the world, all international stars and the second half is the best of British: the Royals, British actresses, a writer, a politician, a tart, two singers and a pimp!

Has your gay audience changed over the years? Their attention span is shorter. They want quick one liners. Telling a 10 minute gag in a gay club is usually not possible and clever lyrics are no good especially with the younger ones. However, put them in a theatre and they all listen! They have so many more things to occupy themselves with today – Facebook, out for a ciggie, on their mobiles, Twitter, Gaydar, blah blah blah… oh dear am I sounding old!!

And has your straight audience changed? No, not really changed. I play to all ages right across the board. I look out sometimes and there’s the couples, young and old, the gay crowd who usually bring their parents these days too, the blue rinses and the students… amazing really… but you’ll always get people sat out there not enjoying it at all…then I think of Bette Midler’s line, which is so true… “F**k ‘em if they can’t take a joke!”

What do you make of the new generation of young drag queens such as Myra Dubois? I don’t really get the chance to see them work, though it appears many of them seem to be karaoke hosts in a sequin dress and net boa!!! There’s no theatrical magic or escapism in their presentation, nothing clever or thought out. It’s sad, but drag has lost its way a little… regarding Myra… I found her witty and well thought out… she made me laugh.

Ceri Dupree

Whether it’s Nana Mouskouri, Cher, Shirley Bassey, Dame Edna Everage, Barbara Cartland, Camilla Parker-Bowles, Marlene Dietrich, Amy Winehouse, Eartha Kitt or Tina Turner who turn up in the Brighton show you can relax for the evening knowing you’re in the hands of a consummate professional, who follows a long line of female impersonators including Danny La Rue and the magnificent Jim Bailey who turned wearing a frock into an art form.

Ceri Dupree brings his 30th anniversary show Fit For A Queen to the Theatre Royal in Brighton on Friday, October 10.

Council highly commended in transport awards

Brighton & Hove City Council has been highly commended for two of its major transport schemes in this year’s National Transport Awards.

Cllr Ian Davey
Cllr Ian Davey

The commendations were made in the ‘Improvements to Bus Services’ category for the Lewes Road Sustainable Transport Corridor and the ‘Road Safety, Traffic Management & Enforcement’ category for the Seven Dials road safety scheme.

Last week the council won the top European award for clean transport, named City of the Year by Civitas.

In its latest awards submission, the council detailed how the city’s sustainable travel projects have helped the city to be recognised nationally as the UK’s least car dependent city outside London by the Campaign for Better Transport.  Almost 40 per cent of residents do not own a car.

The Seven Dials scheme made the junction safer and easier to navigate for all road users and upgraded the pedestrian environment.

As well as the Lewes Road scheme, improvements to bus services such as smartcard ticketing and a growing network of bus lanes helped earn the council a place in the bus category.  Bus journeys in the city have doubled in the last 20 years to 46 million annually.  Around 92 per cent of passengers say they are either very or fairly satisfied with the service.

Lead councillor for transport Ian Davey said:  “It’s great to have this recognition nationally that we are delivering projects which transport experts far and wide believe are common sense.  Our aim is to get the city moving by offering a broad choice of transport modes – and get them all working as effectively as possible.”

Martin Harris, Managing Director, Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company added: “Brighton & Hove Buses are delighted to have been involved with this work which is so important to the economic and social life of the city. It continues our proud history of partnership which has seen the city rise to become the top city for bus use in the UK outside of the capital. More bus trips are made per head of population than anywhere else in the country.”

Parents encouraged to walk to school for fun and fitness

Despite the clear health benefits of walking or cycling, the percentage of children being driven to school has remained stable at around 30% for state schools.

Cllr Ian Davey
Cllr Ian Davey

In Brighton & Hove the number of cars on the road during the school run has actually increased by around 500 around all schools, including those that are privately-run.

Part of the reason for this is that there are now more pupils attending schools in the city, so during Walk to School month in October the council’s school travel team will be promoting the benefits of walking, cycling and even scooting to school.

Councillor Ian Davey, lead member for transport at Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “Walking to school helps create a safer, more pleasant environment as well as being a healthy way to start and end the day. It can be very stressful negotiating the traffic on the school run, whether you are walking, cycling or driving, so we are pleased to be supporting schools to create safer streets around schools.

“Throughout the year we are actively engaging with schools to encourage walking and cycling through school travel plans. Walk to School month is the perfect opportunity to try walking if you don’t normally do it and encouraging pupils to walk or cycle at the beginning of term helps to develop the habit for the rest of the school year.”

To tie in with Walk to School month the council and the police are tackling illegal and poor driver behaviour around schools. The initiative aims to highlight the dangers of stopping and parking on pavements and verges, to encourage motorists to drive responsibly and to improve safety for everyone, especially pedestrians.

More than 30 schools have already signed up to the Walk to School challenge – in excess of 7,500 children. The council has also enlisted five private schools to take part. This is particularly relevant as according to last year’s figures, 60% of children are driven to a private school and only 19% walk, compared with an average of 54% of children travelling to all schools.
