Scottish Equality Charity The Equality Network thanks Alex Salmond for his help advancing LGBTI rights in Scotland.

Alex Salmond announces his decision to step down at First Minister and Leader of the SNP

Following the news that Scotland had voted against becoming an independent nation, Alex Salmond MP has announced he is stepping down as First Minister of Scotland and Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

In his statement, he said: “I am immensely proud of the campaign which Yes Scotland fought and of the 1.6 million voters who rallied to that cause by backing an independent Scotland.

“I am also proud of the 85 per cent turnout in the referendum and the remarkable response of all of the people of Scotland who participated in this great constitutional debate and the manner in which they conducted themselves.

“We now have the opportunity to hold Westminster’s feet to the fire on the ‘Vow’ that they have made to devolve further meaningful power to Scotland. This places Scotland in a very strong position.

“I spoke to the Prime Minister today and, although he reiterated his intention to proceed as he has outlined, he would not commit to a second reading vote by March 27 on a Scotland Bill.

“That was a clear promise laid out by Gordon Brown during the campaign. The Prime Minister says such a vote would be meaningless. I suspect he cannot guarantee the support of his party.

“But today the point is this. The real guardians of progress are not the politicians at Westminster, or even at Holyrood, but the energised activism of tens of thousands of people who I predict will refuse meekly to go back into the political shadows.

“For me right now, therefore, there is a decision as to who is best placed to lead this process forward politically.

“I believe that in this new exciting situation, redolent with possibility, Party, Parliament and country would benefit from new leadership.

“Therefore I have told the National Secretary of the SNP that I will not accept nomination to be a candidate for leader at the Annual Conference in Perth on November 13 to 15.

“After the membership ballot I will stand down as First Minister to allow the new leader to be elected by due parliamentary process.

“Until then I will continue to serve as First Minister. After that I will continue to offer to serve as Member of the Scottish Parliament for Aberdeenshire East.

“It has been the privilege of my life to serve Scotland as First Minister. But as I said often during the referendum campaign this is not about me or the SNP. It is much more important than that.

“The position is this. We lost the referendum vote but can still carry the political initiative. More importantly Scotland can still emerge as the real winner.”

The Equality Network, Scotland’s national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) equality charity, reacted quickly to the breaking news of the double resignation.

Tom FrenchTom French, Policy Coordinator for the Equality Network, said: “While the Equality Network is neutral on party politics, we want to say a huge heartfelt thank you to Alex Salmond for significantly advancing LGBTI rights in Scotland during his time as First Minister. Scotland is now a leader on LGBTI equality, and while more needs to be done, Alex Salmond should be incredibly proud of leading a government that has spoken out for LGBTI human rights, put in place some of the best hate crime legislation in Europe, and delivered one of the most progressive equal marriage laws in the world.”

REVIEW: Xerxes at ENO

Enox2

Xerxes

G.F. Handel

ENO

Nicholas Hytner’s production of Handel’s Xerxes is close to perfect and it’s difficult to believe that this stalwart of the ENO repertoire is almost 30 years old; however, its matured well. It’s the usual daft confection of silliness, puff and history as a story, and even for a Handel opera it’s ludicrous, but then it’s supposed to be, this is comic opera played with a knowing wink for laughs, musical and lyrical laughs and delighting in the foolishness of theatrical pretensions.  We are in on the joke and this makes it more fun. Weighing in at three and a half hours it never lags although it does demand occasional concentration and an attempt to play the whole things as a restoration farce works and setting it in the pleasure gardens of Vauxhall also managed to capture the motion and frivolity at the Rocco heart of this piece.

Eno5

Forget the plot it was the voices we came to hear tonight and Alice Coote as Xerxes captures the petulant monarch perfectly, all swagger and arched eyebrows and her tremendous vocal talents are thrusting and swaggering as well, and although the voice seemed to wear a little at the end, this did no more than express the journey of Xerxes and the audience towards its ultimate conclusion.  The audience loved her and quite rightly too, Coote has just the right combo of tongue in cheek menace and thrilling bombastic charm. She was a delight capturing the tyrant’s disbelief at the ultimate acceptance of his inability to really command the human hearts around him; she also brought a wonderful unpredictable sense to the role which allowed the megalomania of this classical king to shine through the silk and satin. See her sing ‘Ombra mai fu’ here:

ENO4

Sarah Tynan’s Romilda was the delightfuly subtle foil to all this power and her purity of voice and texture balanced the raw power of Coote, Tynan’s sweet projection, although on occasion lacking in power was defined, refined and subtle, she milked her music for as many laughs and sighs and I sat back and marvelled at her control. Her cheeky flirting measured just right and she lit up the stage each time she stepped on it. Adrian Powter’s Elviro was great fun and appeared in some very funny drag too, with more than a knowing nod towards Conchita Wurst, he gathered a lot of laughter.

ENoX1

Rhian Lois as the naughty Atalanta frothed and bubbled like an uncorked chilled bottle of champagne and was just as soft and lyrical too, how we wished for more from her. Andrew Watts’s Arsamenes was wonderfully funny, his voice trembling with unrequited love and allowing the shadows of tone to colour everything he sang, he was on superb form and added value to this marvellous production. Designer David Fielding has given us a stripped down modern setting full of clever touches that invoke both Vauxhall Gardens and Handel’s London and some knowing hints towards the Persian arts and monuments that would have been familiar to a curious Georgian London too.

eno6

Michael Hofstetter conducted with one eye on the stage and another on historical propriety and although on occasional slowed considerable by the singers he managed to keep the tempo hovering between an acceptable rush and a playful plod. This is a great production, full of froth and fizz and presenting a non-stop evening of entertainment, with as many musical highpoint as comedic moments and (if you can last 3.5 hours) well worth going along to the ENO to see this gorgeous revival.

They ain’t called the House of Handel for nothing. See this and beam.

Runs until October 3

Performances on September 20,24 & 26 and October 1 & 3

Sign Up for the Martlets ‘Only Men Allowed’ Charity Walk

The Martlets Hospice is urging men across the city to sign up to take part in a 13 mile sponsored walk along the beautiful Sussex coast on Sunday, October 19.

Only men allowed charity walk

The women of Brighton & Hove raised £70,000 for the Hospice at their 2014 Midnight Walk, so now event organisers are encouraging the men of the city to show what they can do in their very own walk!

The walk called “Only Men Allowed” is open to men and boys of all ages.

Only men allowed charity walk

There is also a shorter route of four miles on offer so that everyone, whatever their fitness level, can take part. The Martlets organisers are hoping that this option will persuade grandads, dads and sons to walk together.

Both walks will start at the County Cricket Ground in Hove at 11.00am on October 19. The longer walk heads along the coast to Saltdean Lido for a refreshment pit stop before heading back to the Cricket Ground for a well-earned pie and drink. Those doing the shorter route will turn around at the Brighton Pier. Well behaved dogs are also welcome and will get their own treat at the end of the day.

The walk on October 19 will be the sixth 13 mile sponsored walk for men that has been organised specifically to raise funds for The Martlets Hospice.

Only men allowed charity walk

Antonia Shepherd, Events Manager at the Martlets, said: “This event has always been very enjoyable, with many regular walkers. This year we are encouraging and asking men and boys to give up a just a few hours on a Sunday to raise much-needed funds for their local hospice. Many local men will know someone that the Hospice has cared for and their participation in the walk will ensure that care can be provided for others in the future. We always need to remind people that the Martlets cares for people affected by terminal illness living in and around Brighton & Hove. Services are provided free of charge but as less than a third of our funding comes from the NHS, we rely on the support of everybody in the community to help with fundraising”.

Kemptown MP urges Saltdean residents to take part in school expansion consultation

Simon Kirby, MP urges Saltdean residents to take part in Brighton and Hove City Council’s consultation regarding expansion of Saltdean Primary School.

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven
Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven

The Council is currently consulting on plans to expand the school for an additional class per year from 60 children joining each Reception class to 90. This will increase the school size from 436 pupils to 654. The consultation opened on the September 1 and will run until the September 29.

The expansion of the school is meant to be implemented in September 2015.

Simon said: “I would encourage all residents to take part in the consultation so that their voices are heard. It is important to make their opinion known to the City Council who will be deciding on this matter.

“Many parents contact me regarding school places at both primary and secondary level so I am aware that this is a really important issue for families. I am also aware of issues surrounding traffic and parking in the area immediately around the school, particularly at school opening and closing times.”

PREVIEW: Brighton Early Music Festival

Brighton Early Music Festival has been described as “early music with a distinctive Brighton twist” and is well known for doing things just a little bit differently.

Brighton Early Music Festival

From the team who brought aerial dancers swinging from the rafters of St Bartholomew’s Church for their tenth anniversary in 2012, there are some decidedly ‘quirky’ offerings in 2014.

Before the start of the main festival, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment brings its acclaimed series of classical pub nights The Night Shift to Brighton for the second time on October 17. Sold out in London, these events are a chance to enjoy a drink and listen to some great music in a relaxed and informal setting.

As part of the opening night on October 24, BREMF Club Night is a chance to don a carnival mask and let your hair down whilst listening to great music from Venice.

The bar will be open throughout this 30 minute short, starting at 10pm. Go along and start your evening with something a bit out of the ordinary!

If historical tales of debauchery are more your thing, the following evening’s Popes, Power and Patronage concert in St Bart’s Church offers some hair-raising tales. Or pop in for a free late night offering of Tudor choral music in the same venue at 10.15pm.

The weekend of November 1/2 is packed with relaxed daytime events.

In Latest Music Bar on November 1, four new generation ensembles will be presenting 30 minute sets from around Europe, with tickets from £4 available on the door.

At the other end of town on November 2, The Old Market will be transformed into a Leipzig coffee house for an updated, costumed version of Bach’s Coffee Cantata.

Focusing on the eternal story of conflict between the generations (no less true in 1730s Leipzig than today!), this will be a sparkling event with some surprises.

The festival culminates in several dance-themed events.

On November 7 the wonderfully-named Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments will be putting on a wild night of Tudor dance and music in their Nine Daies Wonder show. Recreating a 400-year old publicity stunt by Will Kemp, an actor with Shakespeare’s troupe who morris-danced from London to Norwich, St George’s Kemptown will be set out cabaret style and you can take along a picnic to enjoy during the performance.

Finally on November 8 the festival will be premiering Powerplay – a brand new music-drama based on tales from the Paris Opéra and featuring French dance with a dancer and choreographer flying in from Paris. Unusually, the narrator for the evening will be a mischievous cherub who’s seen it all from his perch high up in the Opéra gods, and certainly has some stories to tell….

This year the Festival is offering more low-price tickets than ever, with £5 Prom tickets available for almost all festival concerts. You can also buy bargain prom pass covering virtually all events for just £50.

The bargain prom pass is only on sale at BREMF’s new mini-site www.bremf.org.uk/lovemusic and audience members will be encouraged to tweet about their experiences using the hashtag #lovemusic throughout the Festival.

Catwalk fundraiser for Sussex Beacon at Old Ship Hotel

Take a stitch of Paris fashion, give it a Brighton twist and what do you get?

Brighton FrocksBrighton Frocks is a fundraising event to benefit the Sussex Beacon. Jason Sutton, aka Miss Jason and Simon Puttock have created 20 stunning designs especially for this unique event in the glamorous surroundings of the Paganini Ballroom at the Old Ship Hotel on Brighton seafront.

Ten unique cocktail dresses and ten evening gowns will be modelled by a group of hand picked stunning boys who will be wearing women’s clothes for the first time.

Simon Puttock
Simon Puttock

Simon Puttock has been involved in events management for the past five years. During that time he has organised events both for HIV and cancer charities. Last year he organised BGT!! No, not Britain’s Got Talent, but Bupa’s Got Talent, which was a major fund raiser for charities in West London.

Simon is also involved in the equestrian industry where he deals with horses of all shapes and sizes. This came in handy when he met Miss Jason, seven years ago. Simon cracked: “Slip her a sugar cube or an apple and she’s no trouble at all.”

Over the past seven years Jason and Simon have developed a unique friendship, which has led to the birth of Centre Stage Costumes, their new venture making unique ballgowns and costumes right here in Brighton.

The evening will start with a champagne reception and canapes in the Regency Room, followed by the showing of ten cocktail dresses in the Paganini Ballroom hosted and introduced by Simon and Danny Dwyer from Bear Patrol. Cabaret follows provided by Dolly Rocket and the Brighton & Hove Actually Gay Men’s Chorus.
