Memorial unveiled to local World War One Victoria Cross holder

A commemorative stone and plaque was unveiled today, September 3 at the Brighton War MemorialĀ to honour the memory of Captain Theodore Wright who was awarded the Victoria Cross in World War One.

Relatives of Captain Wright were among those attending the ceremony and laid flowers in his memory. Others taking part included the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Brian Fitch, the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Peter Field and a representative from the Royal Engineers.

The Victoria Cross commemorative stone is part of a national scheme that will see every VC recipient of WW1 commemorated with a paving stone.

The allocation of commemorative stones has been decided nationally, with Brighton & Hove City Council organising the local unveiling ceremony.

Cpt Wright’s VC, which was awarded after his death, was among the earliest awarded in WW1. Two more local men who were awarded the VC during WW1, Ernest Beal and Edward Mannock, will be honoured with commemorative stones in 2018, 100 years after the actions that lead to the awards.

Cpt Wright was born in Brighton in May 1883 and was already serving in the 57th Field Company of the Royal Engineers at the outbreak of WW1 in August 1914.

He was immediately sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force and arrived at Mons on August 22 1914. The following day he was detailed to supervise the destruction of eight bridges over the canal and it was while attempting to connect the leads under one bridge that he earned his Victoria Cross. Despite being wounded by shrapnel early in the operation, Cpt Wright continued to set charges under the bridges and, working with Lance-Corporal Charles Jarvis, managed to destroy Jemappes Bridge.

The following month, at Vailly on September 14, Cpt Wright assisted the passage of the 5th Cavalry Brigade over a pontoon bridge and was killed assisting wounded men to shelter. An officer of the Scots Greys later wrote in a letter: ā€œAt the end of the bridge was an Engineer officer repairing bits blown off and putting down straw as cool as a cucumber – the finest thing I ever saw. The poor fellow was killed just after my troops got across. No man earned a better Victoria Cross.”

The mayor of Brighton & Hove, Cllr Brian Fitch, said: “As we mark the centenary of World War One it is fitting that the bravery of Captain Wright and others who earned the Victoria Cross is commemorated in their hometowns and cities. The memorial stone will provide a lasting tribute to Captain Wright at Brighton War Memorial and we are delighted that members of his family will be at the service to see it unveiled.”

As part of the commemoration Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company is naming a bus after Capt Wright which will be at the ceremony. Ernest Beal already has a bus name after him and one will be named after Edward Mannock to mark the 100th anniversary of his VC.

A range of exhibitions and events are also going on in Brighton & Hove to commemorate the centenary of WW1, including War Stories: Voices from the First World War a major exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery which runs until March 1 2015 .

The exhibition brings to life the wartime experiences of 13 individuals whose intensely personal memories and extraordinary stories reveal the impact of war. A special War Stories Open Day is being held at the museum on September 13 from 10.30am to 4pm, with a range of activities and events going on throughout the day. See Notes to editors for more details of these and other events.

Labour candidate calls for stats on fire response times

Nancy Platts is pressing the East SussexĀ Fire Authority to reveal what impact fire service cuts will have on response times in East Sussex.

Nancy Platts: Prospective Labour Parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven
Nancy Platts: Prospective Labour Parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven

Nancy, the Labour parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, has written to the Fire Authority to ask if response times to road traffic accidents and flooding incidents will be adversely affected by cutting firefighters and an engine.

She intends to raise the matter at a Fire Authority meeting on September 11, as she is concerned that cuts to the service will leave facilities overstretched.

In her letter Nancy highlights that in July 2014 the Argus reported that a crew from Newhaven had to cover for Roedean due to extreme weather suggesting that all five appliances from the city were already attending other incidents

Similarly a month earlier the Argus reported that 100 people were killed or seriously injured on Sussexā€™s roadsā€“ the worst month in four years.

Brighton and Hove currently has five fire engines in the city but there are proposals to cut one from the fleet. Firefighters are facing redundancy, a 96 hour shift structure will be introduced and, according to the fire service’s own modelling, there is an increased risk of loss of life.

Nancy said:Ā ā€œI want Fire Authority members to look again at the decision they took on June 5 to cut frontline services from Brighton and Hove. Putting more money into fire prevention is all very well, but it wonā€™t help deal with the increase in road traffic accidents or flooding incidents. People want help to arrive quickly in an emergency but these cuts will see our fire crews stretched to breaking point.ā€

Council officials block proposed boycott of Israeli goods and services

Senior Conservatives have welcomed the decision by Brighton & Hove Council officials to block former Green Councillor, Ben Duncanā€™s, attempts to introduce a Council boycott of Israeli goods and services.

Cllr Ben Duncan: Independent
Cllr Ben Duncan: Motion ruled out of order

Cllr. Duncan had announced his intention to move a motion at the next Full Council meeting calling for the boycott but it was ruled out of order.

Last month Cllr. Duncan courted controvesy by requesting that the Council fly the Palestinian flag from its buildings to show solidarity with the Hamas fighters in Gaza.

Cllr Graham Cox: Prospective Parliamentary Conservative candidate for Hove & Portslade
Cllr Graham Cox: Prospective Parliamentary Conservative candidate for Hove & Portslade

Westbourne Ward Councillor and Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Hove & Portslade, Graham Cox, has expressed his concerns about potential damage to good community relations with such a proposal.

He said:Ā ā€œThe Council quite rightly has a duty to foster good community relations and should not be involving itself in such controversial and inflammatory matters. If allowed to proceed, this motion would have damaged relations between faith groups, religions and minorities and risked increasing community tensions in Brighton & Hove. Last week, I met with the Sussex Jewish Representative Council and they are feeling upset, frightened and frankly very worried about what the future holds. This comes on the back of last monthā€™s defacing of the Hove Hebrew Congregation Synagogue.ā€

Cllr Geoffrey Theobald
Cllr Geoffrey Theobald: Conservative group leader on Brighton & Hove City Council

Conservative Group Leader, Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, added: ā€œIā€™m very pleased that this motion has been thrown out and I certainly would not have voted for it. Cllr. Duncanā€™s total lack of sensitivity never ceases to amaze me ā€“ he would do well to remember that he was elected to serve all the residents in his Ward and not to create divisions amongst them. Also, as Councillors we are elected to ensure that residents receive good quality services such as rubbish collection, education, housing, social care and so on. We should be concentrating on these issues rather than debating and passing motions on matters of foreign policy over which we have no powers.ā€

Kemptown MP to call for end to puppy farming

Simon Kirby, Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, will call for an end to puppy farming during an upcoming Parliamentary debate.

Simon Kirby MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven
Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven

Mr Kirby will be putting his further support behind the Pup Aid campaign to end the cruel practice of puppy farming in the UK.

Having previously called for a debate on puppy farming in Parliament, and having been a strong supporter of this campaign for some time now, Simon says he is delighted to have the opportunity to help draw greater attention to the campaign in Thursday’s debate.

Simon says puppy farming is a cruel and unnecessary business in which puppies are kept in horrific, overcrowded conditions, often riddled with disease, before being sold to unaware prospective dog owners.

Research has estimated that as many as one in three dog owners have unknowingly purchased a puppy from a puppy farm, either online, on social media, in pet shops or through free newspaper ads, all of which are outlets often used by puppy farmers.

Simon said: ā€œI have long been a supporter of Mark Abrahamā€™s Pup Aid campaign, as it raises awareness of puppy farming to the wider public and seeks to bring an end to this disgusting practice altogether.

“The statistics that show the number of people inadvertently purchasing a puppy from a puppy farm are shocking, and show that greater awareness of this practice is desperately needed. This is why I felt it important to call for a debate on the matter in Parliament earlier this year.ā€

Speaking about the upcoming debate, Simon said: ā€œI look forward to having the opportunity to attend the debate this Thursday, and I will be sure to speak out against continued puppy farming.

“I hope that this debate will really push this campaign forward so that we can bring an end to puppy farming once and for all. I will continue to be a public supporter of Mark Abraham and the vital work that he does fighting for a better life for puppies across the country.ā€

Give your views on pet shop licensing

Pet shop owners in Brighton and Hove are being asked for their opinion on animal welfare following new and improved licensing laws being introduced on their premises.

The information gathered by Brighton and Hove City Council will be distributed to potential pet owners, highlighting what is already monitored in pet shops around the city: health, cleanliness, exercise facilities, food and drink and pet care advice.

The council also have plans to bring the innovative EMODE leaflet and questionnaire into the limelight. Produced by the Animal Protection Agency and designed by scientists and vets, it is dubbed a ā€œscientific tool” towards assessing the suitability of a particular animal as a pet for any given family.

With twelve pet shops already in line, and having recently extended the scope of the campaign to residents, they hope the research will provide a vital step towards providing continuity in animal welfare.

Residents have until September 29 to fill in the questionnaire. which can be found at:
