Добро пожаловать в Марбелье or Welcome to Marbella

Roger Wheeler visits the Costa del Sol to sample the wine, the food and check out those burly Russian men.

Marbella Beach

I have been visiting the Costa del Sol for many years and over that time nothing much has changed apart from the language spoken by a large number of new residents. Today most of Europe is slowly recovering from recession so there isn’t much money around. Of course, the Brits and Germans still visit in their hoards on their cheap package deals, stay two weeks, eat only their national food, get sunburnt, occasionally drunk and then fly home.

However, you would be blind not to notice the very large number of quite heavy set men with their, usually young female companions sitting in the best bars and restaurants. These are the Russians who along with their neighbours from Bulgaria now represent a substantial number of local residents.

Of course they are all over the Mediterranean and have been for some years but it is on the Costa del Sol that they have become very visible. They are apparently buying all the decent real estate, leaving the many thousands of empty houses and flats in the safe hands of the banks that financed over the years but now can’t sell them.

We were strongly advised by a British ex-pat that it would be wise not to engage with any of these gentlemen or “you could be sent home in a box”, I don’t think that he was joking. So, we spent just one night in Marbella, still a very pretty seaside resort and surprisingly very Spanish despite their new neighbours.

Our new friend also advised us to avoid Peurto Banus, once the playground of the Hollywood A listers with their large floating gin palaces and designer boutiques, as, we were told that it had become quite tacky. How, exactly, he didn’t expand on but we moved on anyway. Suffice it to say that the local police in Marbella have opened a special department to deal with the crimes that the Russian and eastern Europeans are held responsible for.

Gaucin

We drove west to our favourite Peublo Blanco, Gaucin, (or Gaycin as it has become known). We have visited many times and never tire of its peaceful charm. Just 24km up from the coast near Estepona it has some of the most atmospheric charisma you will find in any of the many similar pueblos scattered like snowflakes over the Serrania de Ronda, it is an area of stunning natural beauty, with a striking range of mountains, the views are simply beautiful.

 La Fructuosa: Roof Terrace
La Fructuosa: Roof Terrace

Gaucin has at least one gay owned and run hotel – La Fructuosa – with about seven lovely rooms and a great restaurant. There are several excellent tapas bars and a couple of quite expensive restaurants. While we were there none other than Gordon Ramsay and film crew were in residence filming one of his famous programmes on a new restaurant, La Granada Divino. Pricey but very good we were told although how they will manage during the long winter months when the tourists leave will be interesting, as the locals rarely visit.

We drove on to Cadiz, just 120 miles along one of the finest stretches of coastline in Spain which has become the windsurfing capital of the country. There are miles of unbroken sandy beaches with spectacular Atlantic rollers; there are many surfing resorts which are extremely popular.

Cadiz, the oldest city in Western Europe, is one of the most beautiful places we have ever visited. Its tiny narrow streets with five storey buildings almost seeming to touch at the top, hundreds of tapas bars and restaurants with lovely little squares around every corner.

Of course there is a stunning cathedral, worth a visit even if, like us, you have no religious persuasion. Cadiz has a character and atmosphere that is hard to define; you just have to be there. We stayed at the brand new Parador – Hotel Atlantico. Just two years old this hotel is a fantastic building, with very comfortable rooms with balconies with sea views.. We were just unlucky to arrive when they seemed to be training new staff and we had to wait two hours for our room to be ready, unacceptable in one of the four star Paradors. Then dinner that night was just awful, service slow and quite unfriendly and the food, after it had been sent back once, arrived burnt. You may imagine our conversation with the hapless duty manager the next day.

Gibraltar
Gibraltar

From there, home via Gibraltar, which contrary to popular belief, is not an island but a British Overseas Territory, part of the Iberian Peninsula. Gib is a fascinating place; it really is Britain in the sun, with fish and chip shops, M&S and a large Morrison’s.

Caleta Hotel
Caleta Hotel

As usual we stayed at the Caleta Hotel, this is one place that the Parador could learn something from, they have got customer service to a fine art. On arrival you are made to feel like a long lost friend, the rooms are excellent and the restaurant very good indeed. The prices are very reasonable; there are always deals to be had. The hotel is being redeveloped this year into Gibraltar’s first five star and that will certainly be worth a visit.

The Spanish Government is continuing to harass the Gibraltarians by insisting on full searches of every car wanting to arrive or leave the Rock, this can result in three or four hour queues, extremely annoying and frustrating. We were very lucky as we picked up our hire car just across the frontier and were able to simply walk through. On our return we left the car in the same place and walked back through the border without any problem. It all depends on the time of day and the mood of the frontier guards.

The Costa del Sol is still a great place to visit, the beaches, the weather, the food, it is one of the best value for money holidays you can have.

Labour seek views of organisations and residents city wide

Labour in Brighton & Hove ask “what do you want to see from a Labour and Co-operative Council?”

Cllr Warren Morgan, Leader of Labour & Co-operative
Cllr Warren Morgan, Leader of Labour & Co-operative

Cllr Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour & Co-operative group on Brighton & Hove City Council has written to fifty key organisations across the city asking for their views on what a Labour-led council should tackle if elected in May.

Cllr Morgan, said: “We want to hear from residents, business leaders, community organisations, the voluntary sector and others.”

“Their views and ideas are essential if we are to run a council that truly reflects the whole city.”

In his letter Cllr Morgan says that despite tens of millions of pounds of cuts to council services, there is scope for positive policies and fresh approaches to help residents, communities and traders in the city.

Labour has already proposed measures to help tenants in the private rented sector, and to establish a Fairness Commission to address growing poverty and inequality in Brighton & Hove. More major policy announcements are expected soon.

Cllr Morgan, added: “Our first task will be to get the basics right, win back trust in the council and ensure that the whole city benefits from what we as a city council do, not just the city centre.”

“A Labour council won’t be about imposing ideology on neighbourhoods as the Greens have done, but working with people on the issues that matter to them.”

Hove MP Weatherley backs parliamentary motion to reduce tourism-related VAT

Mike Weatherley, Conservative MP for Hove & Portslade, has backed an Early Day Motion (EDM) that calls on the Government to cut VAT for the tourism sector.

Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove & Portslade
Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove & Portslade

EDM 40 (Tourism VAT Reductions) urges the Government to work towards a sector-specific VAT reduction for certain tourism-related products and urges the government to consider action to introduce a sector-specific VAT reduction for certain tourism-related products, following the recent recognition and acknowledgement by government of the extensive and important value of the tourism sector in the UK.

The parliamentary motion was initiated following the acknowledgement that tourism-related businesses lie at the heart of the local community and economy, and therefore call for a reduction in VAT to be applied exclusively to the tourist sector and on specific tourism products.

The EDM further recognises that many local regions have a high reliance on the tourism sector and that this is a sector of great importance for the economy, as shown by the Treasury’s own modelling technique, which showed that a cut in tourism VAT could increase gross domestic product by up to £4 billion per year.

Mike said: “This policy is a great step towards boosting tourism in the UK, and the latest legislative proposals to introduce a sector-specific reduction in VAT are certainly a key policy in boosting the tourism industry and the economy. I am most supportive of policies that will aid local tourism in Brighton & Hove, and welcome this proposal for the Government to consider the benefits to the economy.”

EDM 40 – VAT on Tourism

“That this House recognises the value of the tourism sector; notes that tourism-related businesses lie at the heart of the local community and economy; further notes that 24 out of 27 EU states, including the Republic of Ireland, take advantage of a reduced rate of VAT for some part of their tourism sector, and that this has made a positive impact by increasing investment and jobs; acknowledges that, as a result, local regions that have a high reliance on the tourism sector are at a competitive disadvantage compared to other EU states; highlights the economic study produced by Professor Adam Blake, using the Treasury’s own modelling technique, which showed that a cut in tourism VAT could increase gross domestic product by up to £4 billion per year; calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to introduce a sector-specific VAT reduction for certain tourism-related products, including accommodation and attractions; and further recognises that such a move would strengthen the wider economy, support job creation and generate investment in local businesses.”

Conference for care of older lesbian and gay people

First ever conference to support a person centred care approach in the care of older lesbian and gay people.

Open Clapse Theatre Company

The first ever national training conference is being held in Newcastle upon Tyne this September to help provide health and social care professionals with the necessary skills to meet the individual care needs of members of the older lesbian and gay community.

Making Person Centred Care A Reality: How to Support Lesbian and Gay Older People In Care Settings will address a number of care challenges that arise when an older lesbian or gay person is admitted into the care system and focus on practical approaches and tools to support care organisations to practically adapt to these ways of working.

Jill Heslop, Creative Producer at Open Clasp Theatre Company who are running the conference, said: “When an older gay or lesbian person goes into care there is a common assumption that they are straight and in many cases important aspects of their identity which makes them unique get left at the door.

“Our conference is about supporting care professionals and providing them with the skills necessary to acknowledge that a person’s sexual orientation is an important part of who they are and to practically adapt their approach in order to ensure that their individual care requirements are met.”

The specialist training day will include key speakers from Age UK, Stonewall Housing and a number of experts in gender equality and ageing who will present information, research findings, and address the legal guidelines surrounding the care of lesbian and gay people.

The conference will also feature workshops, facilitated discussions and a live performance taken from the critically acclaimed production Swags & Tails which is based on the real life experiences and opinions of 166 older women, carers, care providers, healthcare nurses and people living with dementia. The scenes will demonstrate examples of good practice in the care of the lesbian community and show how care workers can make positive changes within the workplace.

The conference will be held at The CastleGate in the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne on Tuesday September 30, 2014 from 9:30am – 5.00pm.

Care professionals who would like to attend the conference are encouraged to take advantage of a special early bird rate of £125 which is available until September 1, 2014.
