REVIEW: Into the Woods

ZZ79AC1016

This is a magical production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical set in a fairytale world in which we see familiar characters but in an unfamiliar light. Red Riding Hood is on the brink of discovering her sexuality – with a little help from a certain Mr Wolf; Jack betray’s the giant’s hospitality and later shows that he is also quite keen on violent revenge; and Ms Hood’s granny, far from being a benign old woman, is a chillingly gleeful vivisectionist.

The show has some of its composer’s best songs, is beautifully acted by the cast, boasts an amazing set which puts the audience in the very heart of its enchanted forest, and is vibrantly costumed – in short it will please the most demanding of Sondheimites and probably make a few converts to the cause.

The first thing we hear is Churchill’s declaration of war on Germany and the action unfolds through the eyes of a small child in England during the late ’30s. The first act doesn’t stray too far from the traditional narrative path: Jack (Conor Baum) is told by his mother (Lucy Pickering) to sell their cow which he does for some magical beans. The wolf eats granny and has eyes on an equally ravenous – though more for baked goods than flesh – Red Riding Hood.

Cinderalla has two morally ugly sisters (Hayley Cann and Kathryn Pickering) and has a prince for a boyfriend who doesn’t know her true identity. There’s the addition of a childless couple who have to get various items that the other characters own in order to end the curse of a witch (Nikki Gerrard). It has a happy ending with everyone getting what they want or deserve. In act two we learn the truth of the adage be careful what you wish for.

Emma Edwards’ direction emphasises that this is a musical about the relationship between parents and children. I was a little nonplussed by the wartime setting but it certainly pays off at the evening’s end with an image that had me fighting very hard to hold back tears. Then Gerrard beautifully sings Children Will Listen – which movingly sums up the responsibilities and dangers of parenthood – and I kind of lost the battle.

Baum is a winningly expressive Jack and certainly delivers on his rousing big number, Giants in the Sky. Pickering seems to be channelling Thora Hird at her no-nonsense-Northerner best as Jack’s mother. Duncan Drury is great fun as a spiv Mr Wolf and Emilia Tzilios has a wonderful comic verve portraying a young girl who’s more than a match for her big-toothed nemesis.

Continues at the Emporium, London Road, Brighton until July 27.

Health Secretary visits Brighton

Simon Kirby, MP for Kemptown & Peacehaven brings Jeremy Hunt MP to visit Royal Sussex Country Hospital.

Jeremy Hunt, MP

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, today brought the Secretary of State for Health, Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, to Brighton to show him around the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

This follows Simon’s successful campaign to secure £420 million funding to redevelop the hospital. During the visit the Health Secretary was given a tour of a number of wards and spoke to staff about the redevelopment plans.

Simon said: “Having campaigned so long for this funding I was pleased to be able to show the Health Secretary around the hospital so he could see at first hand just what a difference this investment will make and the outdated facilities the excellent staff at the hospital have to contend with at the moment.”

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “It was great to be able to come to Brighton today to visit the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Having spoken to some of the dedicated, hardworking staff I know just what a difference the £420 million Government investment will make in improving facilities for patients and staff alike.

“Brighton is lucky to have such a strong vocal champion in parliament, Simon pursued this funding relentlessly with myself, the Chancellor and the Prime Minister and left us all in no doubt as to just how important it was for his constituents.

“This investment is a clear signal of the Government’s commitment to the NHS here in Brighton. It is regrettable that the Labour party has tried to play party politics with this important issue, particularly as funding for this project was never approved under the last Government.”

Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus show their love for Brighton Pride

Brighton Pride without the Brighton’s Gay Men Chorus (BGMC) would be like a song without a melody or a vodka without a tonic, which is why they have been invited for the first time ever to sing on the Pride main stage this year.

Brighton Gay Men's Chorus

The chorus was formed in 2005 as a space where gay men could sing and socialise. They have gone on to win the hearts of many, featuring on the BBC’s Last Choir Standing and starring at the Barbican while all the time building a loyal audience in Sussex and beyond.

BGMC trustee Adam Betteridge said of the choirs forthcoming Pride plans: “The Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus, as a registered charity, is entirely aligned with Brighton Pride’s crucial aims in promoting and celebrating the very best that Brighton & Hove has to offer both LGBT people and their friends, as well as the wider ambition of highlighting the many issues that LGBT people are confronted with on a daily basis around the world”.

“In the run up to the main Brighton Pride weekend, we are encouraging our more sporty members to enter a team for the Pride Sports Day on July 27, which will be followed by a performance at the MCC Community Service in the Brighthelm Centre on the same day. And of course we always look forward to putting on a good show during the Pride Parade! With the overall theme being ‘The Whole World’s A Disco’, we have decided to dedicate our float to ABBA’s 40th anniversary Eurovision win at Brighton Dome back in 1974”.

“We are over the moon to be performing the Main Stage at Pride in Preston Park, a first for the guys and something we have hoped to do for some time now! We are also intending on having an information stand in the Community Fair on the same day for people who are interested in learning more about our activities. It’s going to be a busy few weeks for sure!”

“At the very heart of all our activities is the fundraising work we do. This is a crucial part of Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus’ objectives as a charity in its own right, and every year we help raise many thousands of pounds for other organisations such as The Sussex Beacon, The Rainbow Fund, Lunch Positive, as well as lesser known charities such as Shine Theatre Group and Wolfram Syndrome UK. We are so fortunate to be working with the current Pride team who are so clearly striving to put community and charitable fundraising back at the heart of Brighton Pride”.

Hove MP will not stand at 2015 Parliamentary Election

Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove & Portslade and Interlectual Property Advisor to The Prime Minister has today written to David Cameron announcing his decision not to stand for re-election at the General Election in 2015.

Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove and Portslade
Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove and Portslade

The letter read:

“It is after profound consideration that I write to inform you that I will not be standing for re-election at the General Election in 2015.

“I have nothing but huge admiration for the work of the Government over the past four years, including what has been done to get our economy back on track. In Hove and Portslade, this has translated to a drop in unemployment of a staggering 37.5%. I am strongly in favour too of our efforts to reform our membership of the EU but even more so of our pledge of a referendum in 2017 as I have mentioned to you directly on a number of occasions.

“In terms of my own work, I have proudly served on the Administration and Justice Select Committees. I have campaigned relentlessly, with much success, to bring common sense to our laws on residential squatting. I have fought hard on a number of animal rights issues and firmly believe that the hunting ban should remain in place. I have also highlighted the dangers of nuclear power and, indeed, the benefits of solar and other renewables.

“Over the past year, I have taken immense pride in serving as your Intellectual Property Adviser. I am sure that you will agree that we have made huge steps towards really getting politicians and industry talking – which is key to making the most of our country’s wealth of creative talent. It would be a privilege to continue offering my assistance in this regard.

“It goes without saying that my years representing the wonderful people of Hove and Portslade have been one of the most fulfilling periods of my life which I will look back on with very fond memories. I have made so many friends over the years including so many of my loyal supporters both in and out of Brighton & Hove Conservatives. I cannot thank them enough.

“Ultimately, beating cancer two years ago has led me to review what I want for the future. It has been the toughest decision of my life but I do feel that now is the time to move on.”

Mike, a chartered management accountant was elected to Parliament at the General Election of 2010. Prior to his election as an MP he was finance director of record producer Pete Waterman’s group of businesses. He has a keen interest in live music and in 2007 he became Vice President (Europe) of the Motion Picture Licensing Company. Mike was supportive of the LGBT community during the equal marriage debates writing to the Prime Minister in favour of giving same-sex couples equal marriage rights and urging religious organisations to register such ceremonies, which caused considerable controversy at the time.

Mike said: “This has been an exceptionally difficult decision to make. It has been a remarkable opportunity to represent the wonderful residents of Hove and Portslade in Parliament and I look forward to continuing to do this until the election near year.”

Linda Freedman, Chairman of Brighton & Hove Conservatives, added: “We are all incredibly sad that Mike won’t be re-standing. He has been a seriously effective representative for Hove and Portslade over the past four years. Nothing stands still in politics though so our discussions as to what happens next are already far advanced. We’ll be making an announcement on this point shortly.”

Cllr Geoffey Theobald
Cllr Geoffey Theobald

Conservative Group Leader on Brighton & Hove City Council, Cllr. Geoffrey Theobald, said:  “Mike has been an excellent hard-working MP who has always stood up in Parliament for the residents of Hove & Portslade. On a personal basis Mike has been, and remains, a very good friend and I have always valued his advice and support. He has also always worked very closely with the Conservative Group on the Council to good effect. He has been passionate in campaigning to make squatting a criminal offence and, as a result, is one of the select few backbench MPs who has managed to get legislation on the books.

“The Prime Minister also recently recognised his talents by making Mike his adviser on Intellectual Property. And he has achieved all this despite battling serious illness. I wish Mike all the best in the future and I’m sure that he still has a huge amount to contribute to the city I know he loves. I’m certain that whoever is chosen to succeed Mike will make an excellent MP in 2015.”
