Facebook UK announces new custom gender option

Following a successful launch in the US earlier this year – Facebook has announced a new custom gender option on the social networking site to help people better express their own identity on Facebook.

Facebook

After collaborating with LGBT advocacy organisations in the US earlier this year, Facebook has now teamed up with UK experts Press For Change and Gendered Intelligence to update the list of ways people can choose to describe themselves – making sure it’s relevant to people in the UK.

In addition, people who select a custom gender will now have the ability to choose the pronoun they’d like to be referred to publicly — male (he/his), female (she/her) or neutral (they/their).

People can also control the audience with whom they want to share their custom gender – as some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way.

Simon Milner, Policy Director, UK Middle East & Africa at Facebook, said: “When you come to Facebook to connect with the people, causes, and organisations you care about, we want you to feel comfortable being your true self.

“An important part of this is the expression of gender especially when it extends beyond the definitions of just ‘male’ or ‘female.’ Today’s announcement provides significantly more options for people in the UK.”

Jay Stewart, Co-founder and Director at Gendered Intelligence, added: “Gendered Intelligence supports the launch of Facebook’s custom gender options. The comprehensive range reflects the diversity of identity among trans people in the UK. We welcome the inclusion of non-binary identities that are so often overlooked or erased. Facebook’s decision to better reflect trans lives online sends a message to young trans people that their identities and concerns are legitimate and that their voices have been listened to.”

Prof.Stephen Whittle

Professor Stephen Whittle, Vice-President at Press for Change, concluded saying: “Gender identities are complex and for many people, describing themselves as just a man or just a woman has always been inadequate. The European Court of Human Rights has upheld the right to develop our gender identity, as key to our personal autonomy. By challenging the gender binary, Facebook will finally allow thousands of people to describe themselves as they are now and it will allow future generation of kids to become truly comfortable in their own skins.”

The new custom gender option is now available to everyone who uses Facebook in U.K. English.

Kemptown encourages residents to have their say on bus changes

Simon Kirby, the MP for Kemptown, is encouraging residents of Kemptown and Queens Park to have their say on proposed changes to the 18, 21, and 21A bus routes.

Simon Kirby MP

The Brighton and Hove Bus Company are currently consulting with bus users to hear their comments and concerns about the alterations, which are scheduled for later this year.

The 18, 21, and 21A bus routes were implemented earlier in 2014, and were brought in to replace the old 81 bus route. As these have now run for several months, and with adaptations expected to be implemented in September this year, the Bus Company are holding a consultation to gather views about the current service, and also comments on the proposed changes.

Mr Kirby recently attended a meeting with Brighton and Hove Buses to discuss these bus routes, particularly as they are a vital service for many people living in the Kemptown and Queens Park area of Brighton Kemptown, and is calling on those who have an opinion on the changes to make their opinions heard.

Simon said: “As Brighton and Hove Buses provide a vital service to many people in Brighton Kemptown, I believe that it is important to run public consultations prior to making significant changes. This is a perfect opportunity for residents and bus users to share their opinions on the changes that have happened, and the planned alterations for September this year.

“Anybody who wishes to share their opinion can do so by email: queenspark@buses.co.uk, telephone: 01273 886200, and also through social media.”

REVIEW: Princes & the Treasure

The Princes and the Treasure is a modern take on a very old, well-loved story. Review by Syd Spencer

The Prince and the Treasure

Written by Jeffery. A. Miles and illustrated by J. L. Phillips, the book comes alive as soon as you open it.

The Princecs and the TreasureIt tells a tale of bravery, quests, magic, witches and above all true love, but this time with a twist.

When the princess is kidnapped by an evil witch the king calls out to all the men across the Kingdom to help save his daughter and offers her hand in marriage as the reward.

The quest to rescue her begins and two brave men named Gallant and Earnest head out on their journey across the land.

After defeating various beasts and obstacles the princess is saved and returned home to father.

A lavish wedding then takes place and all is well in the Kingdom again.

The difference between this fairy tale and many before is that it is Gallant and Earnest themselves that fall in love with each other, marry and live happily ever after. The many challenges throughout their journey brings them closer and to the realisation that they have fallen in love.

This book is a joy to read to kids, the illustrations are bright and beautifully drawn and there is clearly a similarity in them to an industry well recognised. The connection to the imagery and the many favourite movies before it offers a comforting familiar flavour to the young readers and helps to give them a sense of what is to become.

The two brave men are lovable true heroes and the challenges they face are easily met by them.

The twist of true love is refreshing to see and easily accepted by young kids in our ever changing world. It opens up discussions on love and that can never be a bad thing.

This book is great and the bravery and true love in this fairy tale deserves to be on the shelf of every young kid that loves the world of fairy kingdoms and magic.

The Princes and The Treasure is available in 137 countries. It’s available from all major e-book retailers, such as: Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Google Play Books, Apple iBooks, and KoboBooks.

The hardcover version of the book is available from most every retailer, such as: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Blackwell’s, Foyles, and W.H.Smith.

Government introduce ‘Modern Slavery Bill’

Theresa May MP, the Home Secretary, has introduced  Modern Slavery Bill in Parliament.

The Bill is designed to tackle human trafficking and grants new powers to enforcement bodies to reduce this crime.

After intensive cross-party scrutiny the bill includes measures to:

• consolidate and simplify existing offences to make it simpler for law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to understand;

• introduce an Anti-slavery Commissioner to strengthen the law enforcement response and improve investigations, prosecutions and convictions;

• introduce slavery and trafficking prevention and risk orders to restrict the activities of those who pose a threat to others; and

• require public authorities to notify the NCA about potential victims of modern slavery to inform the operational response.

The Home Secretary will also be publishing an Anti-Slavery Strategy later this year.

Simon Kirby, MP for Kemptown & Peacehaven welcomed the introduction of the Bill.

He said: “I am pleased that the Government is taking strong action to stamp out modern slavery in Britain.

“Human trafficking is an awful crime and it is right that the Government is taking concrete steps to tackle it.

“People in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven will be concerned about modern slavery and I will support these measures to improve enforcement of existing laws and to provide greater support for victims.”

THT launches film clip outlining risk of recent infection for HIV negative men

HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) has launched a short video clip for gay and bisexual men.

THT video

The video outlines the risks of recent infection – the initial period after HIV is contracted, when a person is super-infectious but won’t yet know they have the virus – and urging men to use condoms with new or casual partners.

The 1:30 clip Ben and Will,  has been released as part of It Starts With Me, the flagship campaign from THT and HIV Prevention England (HPE). It demonstrates how men who have recently contracted HIV are often unaware of their status, and – if they have contracted HIV within the last six weeks or so – will have such a high level of the virus in their body, they will be more infectious than at any point afterwards. Among gay men, as many as eight out of ten HIV transmissions are passed on by a partner who doesn’t know he has it.

To view the video, CLICK HERE:

Cary James, Head of Health Improvement at THT, said: “Too many guys are deciding not to use a condom because they believe they or their partner are HIV-negative. It’s called serosorting, but really it should be called seroguessing. If either guy has had unprotected sex since his last negative result, he could not only have picked up HIV but now be super-infectious. As tests often won’t detect HIV during these first few weeks either, it’s really important men protect themselves by continuing to use condoms.”

In the UK, one in five gay and bisexual men with HIV remain undiagnosed, meaning there are currently more than 7,000 men in the UK’s gay community who have HIV but don’t know it. It Starts With Me focuses on a combination approach of condoms, testing and treatment to halt the spread of infection among the gay community. Using condoms and lube when having anal sex significantly reduces the risk of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, being passed on.

HIV Prevention England is a partnership of community organisations headed by THT and funded by the Department of Health to carry out national HIV prevention work in England among communities at an increased risk of infection.
