Why Pride Matters to Simon Fanshawe

Broadcaster Simon Fanshawe explains why Pride Matters to him.

Simon Fanshawe
Simon Fanshawe

I walk out of my front door with not a care. I am a known homo in lots of my life. It never scares me. I live in Brighton and work in London, Manchester, Edinburgh…….all over the UK. I am free to live.

But in 76 states in the world we are not free to live. This is not even about love or sex. It’s about going to the shops to get milk and being safe. It’s about meeting your friends and feeling safe. It’s about reading any book that I want without the police using it as evidence.

It’s about the everyday moments of everyday life. It’s about the everyday freedoms that, as individuals, we take for granted. The freedom to live free of threats, violence and harassment are basic human rights. Every time you buy milk…. shout it out. I have the freedom to live, I want others in the world to have it too.

To fight for that freedom is something to have PRIDE in.

Support Pride for a reason!

Support Kaleidoscope and support those abroad to have the freedom to live.

Simon Fanshawe OBE is a journalist & Broadcaster works to create effective change in organisations and in the world. He is also a founding trustee of the The Kaleidoscope Trust, that campaigns so that others may have the same freedom to live !

Live screens in the club will countdown the minutes and seconds to midnight when history is made and marriage equality becomes a reality in England and Wales.

Stonewall’s Acting Chief Executive Ruth Hunt said: “On 29 March history will be made as every lesbian, gay and bisexual person will be equal under the law for the very first time. That’s a significant moment in our history and something worth celebrating. We’re incredibly excited to be able to mark this special moment with G-A-Y and Ben & Jerry’s.”Jeremy Joseph, founder of G-A-Y said: ‘G-A-Y is so proud to be doing this night with Stonewall & Ben & Jerry’s – this is a part of gay history. As an old romantic I also get very excited when I hear about couples who have met at G-A-Y, so if anyone actually proposes on the night & gets photographed with the cake & confetti, then that will be the icing on the equality wedding cake!’
