The Elements of Eloquence: Mark Forsyth: Book review

The Elements of Eloquence by Mark Forsyth

In an age unhealthily obsessed with substance, this is a book on the importance of pure style. Mark Forsyth gives us his idiosyncratic, erudite and brilliantly funny new book into turning the perfect English phrase.

His blog is a weekly favourite of mine, catch it here:

From the King James Bible to advertising slogans, Mark Forsyth explains the secrets that make a phrase – such as ‘Tiger, tiger, burning bright’ or ‘To be or not to be’ – memorable and also unpicks how and why we use them. He enlightens and burnishes simple ideas until they shine and shows us time and time again what makes a good line so good, and what it takes to makes a ordinary line tremendous. His books are interesting, informative and delicious indulgence Forsyth is a real treat to read and i always feel like i’ve learned something useless from his books, which is simply perfect.

He makes my conversation more sparkly, my wit deeper and gives me insight into the background and murky past of words, and my friends all love this of course, he may also make me more attractive although this might just be the triumph of my self delusion brought on by all the clever stuff crammed in  between this elegant cover.  I read him only for my own pleasure, and it is a pleasure to open his books and read such a labour of love.

See this charming speaker talk about the book here:

In his inimitably entertaining and witty style he takes apart famous lines and shows how you too can write like Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde. Whether you’re aiming for literary immortality or just an unforgettable one-liner, The Elements of Eloquence proves that you don’t need to have anything to say – you simply need to say it well.

A lesson more than half the queens in Brighton would do well to learn although Lola already has it worked out with panache!

This is the perfect gift for a lover of words in your life, a kind gift to a stranger on the bus or even if you fancy a little light self polishing you could buy it for yourself.  Go on, indulge yourself.

Argus debate to discuss the proposed 4.75% increase to council tax

The Argus have organised a debate at Hove Town Hall tomorrow, Thursday, February 6 at 7pm.

Hove Town Hall
Hove Town Hall

The debate has been called following Green Party proposals to raise council tax by 4.75% from May 2014.

Following the last election, the Government put legislation in place that forced councils who wished to increase council tax by more than 2% to hold a referendum. Most councils around the county chose to freeze council tax.

The Green administration in Brighton & Hove City Council, however, has chosen not to do this in previous years and now wishes to raise council tax above the 2% threshold. If approved, this would be the largest council tax rise in the country.

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, has praised the Argus newspaper for organising the debate and has been urging his constituents to attend to make their views known.

He said: “I’m really pleased that the Argus is giving Brighton & Hove residents the opportunity, before we have an enormously wasteful referendum, to highlight their feelings on the Greens’ proposed council tax rise.

“My Conservative colleagues and I are united in opposing this totally unnecessary ask on financially-stretched residents. I have no doubt that the debate will highlight just how opposed Brighton & Hove residents are to even higher taxes.”

Why Pride Matters to the Leader of the Labour Group on the city council

Councillor Warren Morgan, Leader of the Labour and Cooperative group on Brighton & Hove City Council explains why Pride Matters to him.

Cllr Warren Morgan
Cllr Warren Morgan

“The Pride parade is one of the highlights of the year for me, a celebration and a great community event that brings the whole city on to the streets to enjoy the atmosphere.

“There has always been a political aspect to Pride – it’s why it was started – but so much progress has been made in the last fifteen years it is easy to forget that for hundreds of thousands of people around the world the struggle for equality, rights and indeed the ability to live free from violence goes on.

“Homophobia still exists in the UK and we should never be complacent, but by taking part in Pride we are also sending a message to Russia, Uganda and many  other countries that their attitudes, laws and societies need to change, and that while we enjoy Pride in Brighton we stand in solidarity with those for whom persecution for their sexuality is still a daily fact of life.”

Pride Matters

Why do we need a Pride?

Surely the most frequently asked question when it comes to Pride.

James Brookes

James Brooks who is lead contributor for Pride Matters, said:

“Given the huge improvement in equalities over the last decade with protections written into law and a legal recognition of our relationships, then it is understandable that some people, including those within the LGBT community, might think that we’ve won the fight for freedom.

“However, dig a little deeper, keep an eye on the news, read some of the comments on news websites, and it becomes clear that there is still a long way to go within the UK and abroad.”

Peter Grimes: Opera Review: ENO

Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten at English National Opera

grimes6

Taken from the Victorian poem The Borough by George Crabbe the plot of Grimes is grim indeed, he’s a rough bully from a mean family without much sympathy and in the habit of beating his young apprentices to death.  Britten reworks Grimes into a misunderstood loner; a strong complex individual against a closed, narrow minded and simple minded community, but he still beats the young men, they still die.  There’s been endless conjecture and analysis of the fact that this opera reflects the queer pacifists nature of Britten & his Partner, but it seems here that it’s more about the small minded closed nature of British small town life and it’s brutal rejection of difference than about the freedom of choice and personal complexity.  There is also the echo’s of the Nazi mob in this work, the world – Britten’s world- gone mad.

Read the synopsis here:

graimes 5

David Alden directs this dark and deep production as it swirls in the grey mists of some mean pinched post war weary world. There’s little hint of the fishing community or finer character roles written by Britten, this set design from Paul Steinberg is rusty corrugated iron and hash lighting and the tight focus is on the music and singing, pared down, brutish and short. It sounds flat and dull but it’s dramatically vivid.

Stuart Skelton as Grimes and Elza van den Heever as Ellen Orford are exceptional, bringing real life and a spark of individual reason to this world of conformity and non thinking mob action and reaction.

Rebecca de Pont Davies as the creepy mysterious lesbian Aunty is a crepuscular delight too, like an erotic Aunt Sally, all rouge and roughish charm, her voice cuts to the quick of this opera and keeps us focused on the narrative tide as it flows and floods to it’s morbid conclusion.

grimes 4

Felicity Palmer as Mrs Sedley is the hissing judgmental voice of the mob, and is as nasty and unkind as her voice is pure delight.

See the trailer here:

I’m no fan of Britten but this production is a real winner on a number of levels, the singing of Skelton, Van Den Heever and Davis combine with the raw power of the ENO chorus to make this a breathless event of pure theatrical electrical energy, Book now, I said now.

All the singers are wonderful, there’s not one weak voice amongst them and this casting provided a night of thrilling engagement with the audience.

Grimes aunty

If you can’t make it to the ENO this production will be screened live to cinemas across the UK on Sunday 23 February.

The ENO chorus are worth swooning over in this production, their diction shrill and perfect, their movements as tight and nerve tingling as the singing and they bring a real sense of menace and fear to the nights events. They are a human storm of contempt. They snarl and jeer, catcall and howl their collective judgement on Grimes and all his supposed crimes against the town; I found them difficult to endure as they were a vicious vital mob. As a gay man, another outsider, this is a difficult opera to watch without squirming. They spat it out, all of them; it was terrific and terrible at the same time, quite a perfect piece of staging. I was aghast at them.

grimes 2

Edward Gardner is in control of the orchestra from the off and he weaves the complex musical tapestries of this music allowing the seascapes of Britten’s music to flow and ebb alongside the story, his passionate conducting really makes the music shine.

This is an astonishingly good revival and highly recommended. It all falls into place and makes this a utterly absorbing and engaging eventing out at the ENO, not a fun one, but one which will leave you wide eyed and breathless and happy to live somewhere outside the world of The Borough’s thuggish folk.

Green MEPs win cross-party support for EU action plan to stamp out homophobia

GREEN MEPs have won cross-party backing for a new EU ‘roadmap’ on eliminating all discimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Jean Lambert MEP
Jean Lambert MEP

With intolerance on the rise across the EU, Greens called for an EU-wide action plan based on all Member States adopting a coherent approach – with the European Commission empowered to take concrete follow-up measures against countries that do not comply.

London’s Green MEP Jean Lambert is a member of the European Parliament’s cross-party Intergroup on LGBT Rights.

She said: “MEPs have today made clear that homophobia should no longer be tolerated in Europe. Despite EU legislation to protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace, there is still massive discrimination, bullying and violence – in schools, workplaces and in everyday life situations. To address this, MEPs have today supported the call for an EU roadmap against homophobia and discrimination based on sexual identity.

“The European Commission must finally outline a coherent approach at EU level, with concrete action against this undermining of European values. The strong support from almost all political groups for this report shows that homophobic tendencies in Europe are losing ground and a large majority in Europe no longer wants to accept this intolerance. Homophobic laws are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated in Europe.”

Winter Pride UK Art Awards 2014

The inaugural Winter Pride UK Art Awards 2014 launch at Tobacco Dock in London on February 8, 2014.

Winter Pride Arts

The awards have attracted widespread interest from artists across the UK, with entries being submitted from London to Edinburgh.

Stephen Fry
Stephen Fry

Stephen Fry, who has been nominated as the Winter Pride UK LGBT Luminary of the Year, said: “Artistic and cultural events of this kind are so important for the well being of the LGBT community”.

21 Finalists have been selected by a judging panel, including sculptress to the Queen, Frances Segelman, who said: “The Winter Pride UK Art Awards represent an international opportunity for emerging artists to showcase their artworks”. The resulting creations are an astonishing spectrum of artistic practice and will be previewed at CHART gallery in Chelsea from 3-5 February 2014, followed by a display at Tobacco Dock in East London on the 8th of February, when the winner and runners up will be announced.”

Taking centre stage at Winter Pride, hermaphrodite artist XXXora, debuts a giant 16-foot painting, The Apple Tree, an alternative story of Adam and Eve and part of her Captured Hermaphrodite series.

This theme is explored further in Vardan Aslanyan’s thought provoking oil painting, Adam & Adam, and complimented by Kristina Butigans’ striking painting, Locus amoenus, as well as Rebecca Fontaine-Wolf’s, Three Graces, which is painted on chiffon.

The animal kingdom is represented by Shauna Richardson’s Crochetdermy@Bear, a life-size brown bear, and the startled Persian cats in Jesse Olwen’s, Punk Not Dead – whilst a Garden of Eden ocean is brought to life in The Coral Goddess, a coral reef restoration sculpture by Celia Gregory.

Laura Jean Healey is the only video installation artist amongst the 21 Finalists, and her ethereal film The Siren, is a spectral study of a female nude floating through water.

The weird and the wonderful feature in this exhibition; including Trygve Skogrand’s Tree of Knowledge, a multi-limbed man; Mercedes Ferrari’s, The floozy, which is made entirely of lampshades; a melting staircase by Holly Mackenzie, and a miniature staircase and diver within Kate Wragg’s pint sized, The Decision.

Throughout all the entries the inventive spirit of the participating artists has dominated – Welsh artist Ruth McLees makes use of chromatography to explore pigments and their hidden ‘fingerprints’ of colour, whilst Jae Yong Choi’s Black Cloud, is made entirely of installation cable.

Humour and laughter is also evident – there is the flying crockery of Roxana Hall’s The Tablecloth Trick; the exuberance captured in Bronac McNeill’s photograph of Rose Garden from the Drama Queens, and a Naughty Girl oil painting by artist Carl Hoare.

Pride Winter Arts

The last three Finalists for the Winter Pride UK Art Awards make use of light and dark. Electrifying and original, the imagery is powerful – Alice Stallard’s electric pink light 24/7/365 Neon, contrasts sharply with the 1940’s searchlights of Rob Ellis’ spray-stencilled Can’t Bomb Glamour, whilst the long shadows of Vanja Karas’ photograph Posthumous, Pina Bausch, lends an air of serenity and contemplation.
