Hundreds back Lib Dems campaign for free Sunday parking

Hundreds of residents across Brighton & Hove are backing the Lib Dem campaign to scrap Sunday parking charges across the city.

Liberal Democrats

To date, 645 people have signed the petition calling for council managed car parks and on street parking to be free on Sundays.

Central Hove Liberal Democrat, Jeremy Gale, said: “The campaign is very much in its infancy and to have received such strong support so early on is very encouraging indeed.

“What is clear, even at this early stage, is that residents are deeply unhappy with the Green administration’s policy on parking and the obscene amount of revenue that it generates.

“The Lib Dems are offering a viable and affordable alternative to what the current administration is delivering and, over the coming weeks, we’ll continue campaigning for a change in policy.”

Lev Eakins, Brunswick & Adelaide Lib Dem, added: “The Council collects over £16m in fees and fines from parking, the highest anywhere outside of London. In the last two years alone, surplus income of on street parking has risen by an astonishing 45%, providing £10m in extra cash to the Council.

“Given how rapidly this surplus is growing, we believe the Council can easily afford to give our local economy a much needed boost by providing free Sunday parking.

“These plans would stimulate weekend tourism and visits, creating badly needed jobs in our city that suffers from stubbornly high unemployment. It would also make us a more welcoming city, especially for relatives and friends of residents who wish to visit on Sundays.”

Restaurant fined after mouse droppings found

A Brighton restaurant has pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to keep its premises clean after council food safety officers discovered mouse droppings in a saucepan.

Ocean Restaurant, BrightonPalor Ltd., who run the Ocean Restaurant at 43-45 Kings Road Brighton, was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,862.50 following the hearing at Brighton Magistrates Court yesterday, January 20.

During a food safety inspection on September 21 2012, officers from Brighton & Hove City Council found a mouse infestation in the kitchen, with droppings on shelving under the sink a wash hand basin and even in a saucepan. The business agreed to stop trading to clean up the kitchen and carry out further treatment.

Councillor Pete West, chair of the city’s environment committee, said: “It was lucky that customers did not become ill from food prepared under these conditions. The city council will not hesitate to take action in these extreme cases. Fortunately they are rare and both businesses and the council are working hard to ensure food hygiene standards are high in local establishments.”

Currently, of the 2,760 localfood businesses on the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme 1,476 have the top grade of 5 out of five and 628 have four.
