Brighton Pride 2013 raised a record £43,000 for local LGBT/HIV organisations who provide front line services to the LGBT communities in Brighton and Hove. The money was distributed through the Rainbow Fund grants programme administered by the Sussex Community Foundation.

Pride 2013 was delivered by the three directors of Brighton Pride CIC; Paul Kemp, Dulcie Weaver and David Hill.

David Hill’s expanding business, The E3 Group, has just been offered two commericial ‘pop’ festivals to produce in 2014 which means that David won’t have the time needed to dedicate to Brighton Pride in 2014 so he is stepping down after a year of chairing the organisation.

David told Gscene: “As a passionate member of the LGBT community in Brighton & Hove and someone who has been involved with Pride for over fifteen years, I sincerely hope that the event is a great success in 2014 and builds on what we achieved in 2013. Most importantly I hope Pride continues to deliver the much needed funds for our community charities and organisations.”

Pride’s Managing Director Paul Kemp, added: “Pride thanks David and the E3 team for their massive contribution not only delivering a hugely successful Pride, but also achieving record fundraising total for our community groups.”

Brighton Pride have announced Freedom to Live as the umbrella theme for Pride 2014 which will take place on the weekend starting Friday, August 1.

Following a meeting with Arthritis Research UK, Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, is encouraging people in Hove and Portslade, who are living with osteoarthritis, to find a form of physical activity they enjoy to help keep their joints healthy.

Mike recently met with representatives from Arthritis Research UK in Parliament and has agreed to raise a number of issues with his ministerial colleagues.

According to Arthritis Research UK, over eight million people in Britain have sought treatment from their GP for the pain and disability caused by osteoarthritis. This condition affects the joints, causing pain and stiffness, and there is currently no cure for osteoarthritis.

Treatments include pain killers and physiotherapy, and in some more severe cases joint replacement. Measures such as regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy body-weight play an important part in relieving joint pain and stiffness.

Mike said: “Unfortunately, joint pain and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis can have a major impact on people’s lives. I was interested to learn from Arthritis Research UK that at the right level exercise can ease stiffness, improve joint movement and strengthen muscles. The ‘keep moving’ campaign is an excellent initiative that I was very happy to support.”

In 2012, Reverend Oliver White lost two thirds of his congregation, his home and his Church, when he voiced his support for same-sex marriage.

Last November, the Reverend found his new church in St Paul, Minnesota and has launched an LGBT Program, Churches for Safe Spaces which he hopes to expand to churches across the country who are on the verge of opening their doors to everyone.

Initial Programs Includes:

• Bringing together a network of churches that will adopt the Safe Spaces program, similar to the Safe Spaces Campaign in schools

• Connect with LGBT programs across the nation to create an LGBT resource hub for churches throughout the country

• Appoint LGBT Program Directors

• Offer marriage equality messaging and acceptance teachings to other churches

• Deliver outreach campaigns to churches including: youth employment, community involvement and poverty
