Crew Club youth project needs new trustees

Crew ClubThe Crew Club, a registered charity committed to providing opportunities and a safe place for the young people of Whitehawk and East Brighton, is seeking new volunteer trustees to join the Board for the New Year.

Trustees should live in Brighton & Hove and are expected to use their skills, knowledge, networks and experience to help the Board to reach sound decisions in the governance of the charity and the running of the club as well as fulfilling the statutory duties of a Charity Trustee.

The Board is particularly keen to develop its expertise in:

• Business Links & Management

• Fundraising & Social Enterprise

• Human Resources

Simon Burgess, Acting Chair of Trustees, said: “What the Crew Club does is vital in giving young people a positive start in life.

“The fact that the club is a grass roots organisation that has come from the community it serves makes it particularly valuable. But these are challenging times in which to secure funding from a range of sources so we want to widen even further our knowledge, contacts and experience so that we can build on the club’s success for the sake of young people in the area.”

The role is voluntary and unpaid.

Brooklyn Pride Centre to host lesbian pregnancy educational gathering

The American Fertility Association (AFA) and California Cryobank are set to host a gathering at the Brooklyn Community Pride Center for gay mums-to-be.

American Fertility Association

The Gay Women’s Gathering will take place on Wednesday, January 8 from 6 to 8pm and will provide critical information in a relaxed, conversational format.

Topics will include:

• Deciding between a sperm donor you know and one you don’t

• Getting pregnant at home or in a doctor’s office

• Understanding your legal rights and optimising your fertility potential

Ken Mosesian, Executive Director of The AFA said: “There was an overwhelming response to the first Gay Women’s Gathering last year and we’re excited to work with this thriving community again. We invite all interested parties to attend. As the only inclusive, national fertility association committed to serving the LGBT community, we’re grateful to California Cryobank, whose generous sponsorship of our work makes these events possible.”

He added: “We’ve assembled a stellar and knowledgeable team of presenters, known for their commitment to this population, including top-notch attorney Melissa B. Brisman, Esq. and Brooklyn’s own Diana E. Chavkin, M.D. of Genesis Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.”

Scott Brown, Director of Client Experience & Communications at California Cryobank said: “Finding a sperm donor, selecting an insemination procedure, and protecting both parents’ legal rights can all have significant, long-term financial, medical and emotional impact on a lesbian family. California Cryobank is proud to be part of this incredibly important evening of family building education and support.”

The evening is focused on the lesbian community, but all are welcome to attend. A light dinner will be served and educational gift bags given to all participants.

Calls for ‘Turing Pardon’ to be extended

Thousands sign petition to extend pardon granted to Alan Turing to all innocent people convicted under Gross Indecency laws

A Care2 petition has been launched following the Posthumous pardon granted to Alan Turing – the British mathematician famed for cracking the enigma code in World War Two and later convicted under Gross Indecency laws.

To date, 11,000 people have signed a petition asking the British Government to grant this same pardon to a further 50,000 men, 15,000 estimated to still be alive today, who were convicted using the same laws.

Author of the petition LGBT activist, blogger and novelist Steve Williams says that under the Labouchere Amendment being gay should never have been a crime, and those innocent people who endured sentences under the law like Alan Turng should be granted the same pardon.

Williams said: “Today, the UK is a leading force for gay rights advocacy in the world.”

“The British Government has helped oppose laws like Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill and Russia’s so-called gay propaganda ban. Yet the stain of the UK’s historical persecution remains as a result of these convictions. While the current Government has provided some men the chance to have their Gross Indecency convictions expunged, those men deserve no less than the pardon that Turing received, and that is why this petition is necessary.”
