Alan Turing to be pardoned

Alan Turing
Alan Turing

Alan Turing, known as the father of computer science, the code breaker that helped win World War 2, and the man subjected to chemical castration by the state for being gay, is to receive a pardon nearly 60 years after his death. The Government has said that they are prepared to support a backbench bill pardoning the war hero.

This follows a campaign launched in 2009 with a petition calling on the Government to recognise the “consequences of prejudice” that ended the life of the scientist aged just 41.

Notable among the campaign’s supporters was the well-known atheist and humanist Professor Richard Dawkins who said that an apology would “send a signal to the world which needs to be sent”, and that Turing might still be alive today if it were not for the repressive, religion-influenced laws which drove him to despair.

The author of The God Delusion, who presented a television programme for Channel 4 on Turing, said the impact of the mathematician’s war work could not be overstated. “Turing arguably made a greater contribution to defeating the Nazis than Eisenhower or Churchill. Thanks to Turing and his colleagues at Bletchley Park, allied generals in the field were consistently, over long periods of the war, privy to detailed German plans before the German generals had time to implement them.”

“After the war, when Turing’s role was no longer top-secret, he should have been knighted and fêted as a saviour of his nation. Instead, this gentle, stammering, eccentric genius was destroyed, for a ‘crime’, committed in private, which harmed nobody,” said Professor Dawkins.

The UK LGBT Humanist charity the Pink Triangle Trust (PTT) has welcomed news of the pardon.

Secretary George Broadhead, said:

“It was great to have such a prominent atheist and humanist as Richard Dawkins adding his weight to the campaign and it is highly significant that he identified religious-influenced laws as being to blame for Turing’s suicide. “As a gay atheist himself, Alan Turing is a Humanist hero and a pardon after the appalling way he was treated for being gay is long overdue.”

Four in five Britons comfortable if new heir grows up to be gay

William & Kate

YouGov polling for Stonewall, the LGBT equality organisation (of 2,074 adults) has found that 83 per cent of people in Britain would be ‘very comfortable’, ‘comfortable’, or ‘neutral’ if the first child – and heir to the throne – of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge grows up to be lesbian, gay or bisexual.

Stonewall were among the first to offer congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the arrival of their new baby.

Ben SummerskillStonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill said:

“Millions of people will be celebrating today’s news, just as millions last week celebrated the news of equal marriage in England and Wales. Happily, since last week every child born in Britain is born into a society where gay people are now equal in law.”

Hove MP Weatherley Backs Nuisance Call and Text Inquiry

The Culture, Media & Sport Committee has decided to hold an inquiry into nuisance telephone calls and text messages. The Committee will investigate the current regulatory system and its enforcement, as well as the effectiveness of the Telephone Preference Service and practical measures by communications service providers to curtail such communications.

MIke Weatherley, MP
MIke Weatherley, MP

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, is backing the new inquiry.

Mike said:

“Anyone with a phone will know just how annoying these repeated nuisance calls can be. With the advent of text messages, the problem is even worse, with unwanted texts popping up 24 hours a day. As well as disturbing people, a huge amount of time is wasted answering calls and reading and deleting nuisance messages. Something has to be done, which is why I am backing the DCMS Committee in addressing this issue.”

How to Respond:

The Committee requests short written submissions in Word format.

A copy of the submission should be sent by e-mail to cmsev@parliament.uk and should have ‘Nuisance calls’ in the subject line.

Submissions should be received by Thursday 15th August 15, 2013.

Home for cyclists at Brighton Station

A new cycling hub at Brighton railway station was approved by Brighton & Hove’s planning committee today on Wednesday, July 17.

The three storey building will provide shower and changing facilities, a bike shop, café, cycle repair outlet and bike hire, as well as storage for 500 bikes, making it the most comprehensive facility for cyclists in the city and one of the best in the region.

Approximately 170 spaces will also remain around the rest of the station resulting in a total of 670 spaces for bikes, an increase of over 420

Cyclists will use a turnstile system at ground level accessed by a key card. Toilets, showers, changing rooms, bike hire and repair, bike shop and café with an outside terrace will be on the first floor, with further café space on the lower ground floor. Although the building will be three storeys, from the station concourse it will look like two storeys because of the steeply sloping site.

The cycle parking will be open 24 hours a day and the facility will be free at point of entry.

Another advantage of the scheme is the proposal to create an additional public space with landscaping.

The not-for-profit scheme is supported by the Department for Transport (£500,000), Southern Rail (£100,000), Network Rail (£200,000) and Brighton & Hove City Council (£100,000 through transport funding). Funding for the landscaped area is expected to come from the Brighton Station Gateway project.

The 2011 census showed that cycling to work in Brighton & Hove has more than doubled in the last 10 years (118% increase).

Data collected at various points around the city show on average an 11% rise in daily cycle journeys across the city from 2009 to 2012.

Cllr Ian Davey
Cllr Ian Davey

Councillor Ian Davey, lead councillor for transport, said:

“We’re so excited at the prospect of this facility which will be of enormous benefit to cyclists arriving to and from the station. It’s going to be a great incentive for more people to try cycling, whether they are travelling for business or visiting for pleasure. It will also encourage people to combine different types of travel, combining the bike with the train.

“I would like to thank all the partners for making this happen and I’m particularly pleased that this will be a new resource for the public at the city’s main station which thousands of people use every year.”

Cruising at Brighton Marina

The Belle
The Belle

You would have thought that with the Brighton Marina being right on the door step, someone would have thought about offering Rainbow Cruises before. Well they haven’t, not until now that is.

Brighton Sea Cruises ran their first Rainbow Cruise last month. There is no better way to see the city than from the sea. I have lived in Brighton for 30 years and have never seen the seafront from the ocean. On a clear day the views are quite simply stunning.

The Belle carries up to 60 passengers and is fully licenced under MCA regulations with refreshment and entertainment available on board on selected trips or by special request.

You will find The Belle moored by pontoon 4 or 6 in Brighton Marina next to the Wetherspoon Bar, The West Quay.

Cruises run daily along the seafront:

• On Mondays by prior arrangement

• Tuesdays to Thursdays from 3pm with evenings by prior arrangement

• Fridays and Saturday at 11am, 1.30pm, 4pm and 6.30pm for private hire

• Sunday at 11am, 1.30pm and 4pm with evenings by arrangement

Trips take one and a half hours and you cruise along the seafront between the piers and back again to the Marina taking in close views of the Brighton Wheel, the nude beach and of course both Piers. Adults cost £10, children under 14 £6 and students £8 (with SU card).

Private hires are a reasonable £275 for one hour, £380 for one and a half hours, £500 for two hours, £600 for three hours and £700 for four hours. (off peak discounts are available). These rentals are ideal for a private birthday parties, staff team building sessions, a fishing trip or a civil partnership celebration with a difference.

There is a small bar on the boat manned by the lovely Bunty and catering arrangement can be organised by telephoning 08000935 191 or 0794 2491 654

Bunty and Chris

Chris Sweeting left his job working as a ‘trolley dolly’ for Air New Zealand to invest in this new venture. He wants to develop the ‘gay cruises’ idea but as I said to him every cruise is a gay cruise in Brighton.

Special events include comedy nights on board which have proved to be very successful. If you don’t find the comic funny you can relax on the top deck and take in the sea air.

To find out when there are more special Rainbow Cruises check out their website: www.brightonseacruises.com

Hove MP signs EDM

Mike Weatherely, MP
Mike Weatherely, MP

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, and Patron of Autism Sussex, has signed a Parliamentary Motion which calls on the Government to review legislation surrounding disability hate crime in order to address the disturbing levels of abuse against people with Autism.

Mike has signed Early Day Motion (EDM) 172 (Hate Crime Against Those With Autism), which draws attention to the findings of a National Autistic Society survey that highlights how much of a problem hate crimes are for people with Autism. The EDM has received cross-party support in Parliament.

Mike said:

“It is encouraging that this campaign has received significant backing, both in Parliament and in the media. This must, therefore, be followed up with practical reforms in the way that these hate crimes are recorded and how they are treated under the law. There is no doubt about it that people who engage in these campaigns of hate – putting their victims through an absolute nightmare – are pernicious bullies that must be stopped.

EDM 172 – Hate Crime Against Those With Autism, reads:

That this House congratulates Kevin Healey, an Ambassador for the National Autistic Society, who has been helping to raise awareness of hate crime, including cyber-bullying, trolling, stalking and physical bullying, against those suffering with autism through a highly successful Twitter campaign and a Global Anti-Bullying Autism Campaign; notes that the campaign has received the backing of celebrities such as Ricky Gervais, Katie Price and Melanie Sykes; further notes concern at the findings of a National Autistic Society survey that revealed 81 per cent of respondents having experience of verbal abuse, while 47 per cent reported that they have been victims of a physical assault, and that 24 per cent had been victims of cyber-bullying; and finally, calls on the Government to review urgently legislation and police recording of disability hate crime in order that victims can be confident that their suffering will be taken seriously and ended.
