Cllr Geoffrey Theobald
Cllr Geoffrey Theobald

Brighton Conservatives AGM has confirmed Councillor Geoffrey Theobald as group leader. He ran unopposed for the top job and is now beginning his third year in the role.

However there is a change in one of the Deputy Leader positions which sees Woodingdean councillor Dee Simmons replacing Denise Cobb who is to become Mayor of Brighton and Hove this month.

The other Deputy Leader position remains unchanged with Gary Pelzer Dunn continuing in the role.

Roger French to become a Freeman of the City

Roger French

Roger French, the recently retired head honcho of Brighton and Hove buses, will be honoured by the city he served in a special meeting of the council later this month.

He’s to become one of a select band of only seven to be made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Brighton & Hove.

Roger was not only at the wheel of the buses for nearly 30 years; he was also Chair of both the city’s Strategic Partnership for seven  and the Trustee of the Martlets Hospice for nine.

This new honour will sit nicely on his mantlepiece beside his already awarded OBE.

Subline bar and club came out top of the brains list at the annual Golden Quiz at Charles Street last night, April 30.

Seventeen teams from the business, voluntary and statutory sectors battled it out to win the first Golden Handbag Oscar of the season and in the process raised £400 for the Rainbow Fund.

Lola Lasagne hosted what she calls her “favourite gig of the year”,  kept the teams in line and stamped her mark on the evening in her usual style.

Golden Quiz virgins from the Council’s Partnership Community Safety Team were given a warm welcome while the police team were the butt of some of Lola’s cruelest jokes.

James Brooks created the questions for the quiz and along with Huw Edwards and Ian Mager-Playford were the invigilators when it came to checking the marks.

Team Camelford Arms came a close second and Team Gscene came in third.

Special thanks to Charles Street, Kat and the staff for hosting the night on behalf of the Rainbow Fund an independent LGBT fund administered by the Sussex Community Foundation who gives grants to LGBT and HIV organisations who provide front line services to the LGBT community in Brighton & Hove.
