Council wins funding to make cycling safer

Cllr Ian Davey
Cllr Ian Davey

Brighton & Hove has won government funding to improve the design and layout of roads which will benefit road users and cyclists in particular.

The city council have secured £300,000 which will be spent on improvements to the Seven Dials area of Brighton. With council match-funding, it will mean that £600,000 has been allocated to improving safety at one of the city’s most dangerous junctions.

Cllr Ian Davey, Chair of Transport Committee said:

“We’re delighted that the council bid for a £300k contribution for the Seven Dials scheme has been successful. This amount will come from central government as part of Norman Baker’s Safer Cycle Routes funding.

“The junction has seen 20 casualties in the past three years, and half of them have been cyclists. This money will help fund safety improvements, which will benefit everyone using the junction, particularly cyclists. This will contribute towards making Brighton and Hove a city fit for cycling.”

The Seven Dials is an important destination for local people with many small businesses. The scheme has been designed to improve the look and feel of the area, as well as address safety concerns.

Work began last month on the project, which is expected to be completed at the end of the year.

Changes mainly involve creating a longer oval traffic island to replace the current mini-roundabout so that vehicles from various roads will merge more gradually rather than converging on a single point.

Any unspent funds will be reinvested in other transport priorities set out in the city’s Local Transport Plan.

The project which is in the ward of the leader of the Council, Cllr Jason Kitcat has been surrounded by controversy following an earlier decision to cut down a historic elm tree by the side of the road. Protesters took to the tree to stop it being cut down. They have now finished their protest pending discussions with the Council.

New Mayor plans a record breaking year for local charities

Cllr Denise Cobb

Homeless charity Off the Fence, The Martlets Hospice, The Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, Age Concern and The Argus Appeal have been chosen by the incoming Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Denise Cobb, as her charities for her mayoral year.

Councillor Denise Cobb, 59, has been a Conservative member of Brighton & Hove City Council since 1999 and represents the Westbourne ward in Hove.

The decision to appoint her as the next Mayor was made by councillors at a meeting at Brighton Town Hall on Thursday, December 13.

Councillor Denise Cobb said:

“I’ve selected more charities than usual because I found it impossible to decide between them. They were all close to my heart in some way, and they benefit people from a range of backgrounds.

“I’ve a lot of first hand experience with these charities, Age Concern delivers a lot of help to my mum, and I know how vital the support the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity provide is, because when my grandchild was born, he wasn’t in good health.

“I want this to be a record breaking year in terms of fundraising and I plan to work hard to make this happen. I’m keen to hear if residents have any ideas on how to help.”

The outgoing Mayor Councillor Bill Randall supported Allsorts, the LGBT Youth Project among his charities during the last year.

Laura said:

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, and founder of Rock the House, a music competition which draws attention to the importance of Intellectual Property, has put forward his nominations for Hove’s entry into the parliamentary competition.

Following a fierce battle of the bands, local artists from Sin to Survive and The Basis (an under-18 entry, whose music video was also submitted), have been nominated into Rock the House 2013, along with solo artist Julia Fitness. Rock the House, now Parliament’s biggest competition, was set up by Mike to raise awareness amongst MPs of Intellectual Property, copyright and live music.

Mike said:

“We’ve had an incredible 440 MPs nominate artists, bands and venues from their constituencies into this year’s competition – that’s over two thirds of MPs, which makes Rock the House Parliament’s largest ever competition. Hove has some excellent musical talent and we received so many entries that we decided to have a battle of the bands night to choose the final nominations.”

He added:

“It was tough having to narrow it down to three finalists, but I am delighted to nominate Sin to Survive, Julia Fitness and The Basis as Hove’s entries for Rock the House and wish them all the best of luck for their respective categories.”

Their aim was to raise funds and awareness for the life limiting condition Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

The show featured many classic Show Musical tunes, all with a twist and many lyrics had been re-written, for this outrageous adult comedy evening.

The event was hosted by the divine and statuesque (6’6” in heels) Billie Lewis, and included plenty of audience participation. Maisie Trollette gave a star performance to much applause and laughter. Individual numbers varied from Eartha Kitt, Adele, Wicked, A Chorus Line, Annie, Les Miserables and many more, all in the hilarious style of Forbidden Broadway.

The performers raised £685 for their chosen charity, and would like to thank everyone for their wonderful support.

Let’s hope it’s not long before we get to see this show in Brighton!

Are the city’s taxis accessible?

WEB.600Brighton and Hove City Council’s  Licensing Committee is seeking the public’s views to help develop an accessibility policy for hackney carriage drivers, vehicles and operators in the city.

Interested parties can join in the consultation process by completing a questionnaire on the council’s website before May 8, 2013:

To view questionnaire, CLICK HERE:
The city council is responsible for licensing taxi vehicles and their drivers and the Equality Act 2010 requires public transport services providers, including taxi drivers and operators, to ensure people with disabilities are not discriminated against or treated less favourably.

The questionnaire looks at all aspects of vehicle accessibility, from the positioning and type of door handles to the availability and positioning of steps and includes a section on advice and training for taxi drivers.  Results of the survey will be reported at the next Licensing Committee meeting in June 2013.

Once agreed, the accessibility policy will sit alongside the council’s handbook, the ‘Blue Book’, which provides guidance to taxi drivers, proprietors and operators.

Cllr Duncan, chair of Brighton & Hove City Council’s Licensing Committee, said:

“Taxis are an important, and sometimes the only, means of transport for many disabled people and we want to ensure the city’s fleet is accessible to all our residents and visitors.  The council has and continues to support a policy of maintaining a mixed fleet of wheelchair accessible vehicles and saloon cars and this study will help us determine an accessibility policy that reflects the diverse needs of different passengers.”
