Stonewall, the LGB equality charity is asking its supporters to raise funds to tackle homophobia worldwide by staging fundraising parties during the Eurovision Song Contest on May 18. The charity has produced party packs to help supporters have fun while raising money.

TV presenter Graham Norton has contributed his own cocktail recipes to help get the parties going.

The charity’s party packs are available at www.stonewall.org.uk/eurovision

The 58th Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Malmö, Sweden, and Stonewall hopes its ‘We Are All One’ theme will encourage people to support the millions of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people worldwide who live in countries where it’s illegal to be gay.

Stonewall Director of Fundraising Catherine Bosworth said:

“Stonewall is campaigning hard in Britain for equal marriage, the last step towards full legal equality. Britain is a beacon for equality worldwide, but in nearly 80 countries it’s illegal to be gay. In some, gay people can even be executed just because of the way they were born.

“Eurovision brings 39 countries together this year, some of which have bad records on gay equality. We hope that even as Eurovision fans have a great time, they can support our work to help hundreds of millions of gay people worldwide look forward to a better future.”

Stonewall works with grassroots campaigners in countries worldwide to support their work to gain equal rights for lesbian, gay and bisexual people. In the last few months the charity has provided support to groups from Croatia, Slovakia, Greece, Uganda, Russia and the Ukraine.

Go by bus in Brighton & Hove this summer

WEB.600New bus timetables, which come into effect on April 21, will provide even more opportunities to travel in and around Brighton & Hove by public transport, whether for work or pleasure.

The number 77 bus, part of the ‘Breeze up to the Downs’ service which links the city to the surrounding countryside, will run twice an hour on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from April 21 and from June 22 until September 1 will run every day, with open top buses.

‘Breeze’ buses 78 and 79, which go to Stanmer Park and Ditchling Beacon respectively, will run hourly on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays and, following a successful trial, the 79 bus will have two spaces for bikes on board. The only time the 79 will not run this summer is on June 16 when Ditchling Beacon will be closed for the London to Brighton Bike ride.

Brighton & Hove City Council funds and manages the ‘Breeze’ bus service, with contributions from the National Trust and South Downs National Park Authority.

The number 52 buses from Woodingdean and Ovingdean to the Marina will run 15 minutes earlier, following consultation which showed this would help commuters with their connections into Brighton. The 52 is run by The Big Lemon under contract to the city council.

On other routes, there will be increased frequency from Hangleton during peak times during the week, as well as an improved service to and from Mile Oak on Sunday mornings. Westdene will also see improved early morning frequency on the 27 route to ensure better train connections.

Councillor Ian Davey, chair of the city’s transport committee, said:

“There’s never been a better time to travel by bus in Brighton & Hove, whether you want to take in the scenery on a trip to the Downs or use the service to travel to work or the nearest train station.

“The bus routes are extensive and many of the improvements to the new summer timetables have been made at the suggestion of Brighton & Hove Buses’ passengers or bus drivers.”

For coastal commuters into the city, there will be an additional limited stop bus (12X) from Eastbourne in the mornings, together with another 12 to cover the additional stops, starting at Seaford, plus an extra afternoon 12X from Churchill Square at 5pm.

The 12 route which covers Eastbourne to Brighton, will also benefit from extra journeys on Sunday evenings.

An earlier bus (23) is being laid on from Lewes Road to the Marina for people starting work at the Royal Sussex County Hospital at 7am.

For those travelling to the city from Lewes, there will be an extra morning peak journey to Brighton during the week on the 28/29 route.

Improvements and an extra weekday journey will be provided on the busy 25 route which goes to the universities.

The last bus to Hollingbury Asda (24) will continue to Woodbourne Garage to provide a better late night service to people in that area.

Some bus services have altered times for better connections with rail stations and to improve reliability.

•    Starting Easter weekend, city residents can travel out to Sheffield Park Garden and the Bluebell Railway on new or extended weekend services offered by Compass Bus (121 from Lewes on Saturdays or 769 from Brighton or Haywards Heath on Sundays and bank holidays). The 769 also serves Pyecombe, Hassocks, Burgess Hill, Scaynes Hill and North Chailey.

Hove MP chooses Hove Tandoori for Tiffin Cup

WEB.600

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, has selected, Hove Tandoori as Hove’s entry for the 2013 Tiffin Cup competition to find the top curry restaurant in the country.

Hove Tandoori, located on Church Road in Hove, will now have the opportunity to compete in the national stage of the competition in the House of Commons with the country’s top curry-creators for the coveted Tiffin Cup itself.

Last year, Touch of India on Boundary Road made it through to this stage and was highly commended by competition judges.

Mike said:

“I am really grateful to everyone who got in touch this year with nominations for the Tiffin Cup. I received dozens of emails from residents keen to nominate their favourite local curry house. However, one restaurant led the way and I am delighted to put forward Hove Tandoori as Hove and Portslade’s Tiffin Cup 2013 entry. I wish Hove Tandoori the best of luck and hope I will see them in Parliament for the competition final.”

Council gets ‘Living Wage’ accreditation

From April 1 Brighton & Hove city council will be an accredited Living Wage Employer.

In November last year the Policy & Resources Committee approved plans to uplift the lowest paid council staff to the UK Living Wage rate of £7.45 per hour.

128 permanent staff will benefit from this increase – 98 of whom work in the city’s schools – plus many staff who work for the council on a casual basis. They Council will also be looking at their contractual arrangements to try and make sure that those who work on the council’s behalf benefit as well.

The Leader of the Council Jason Kitcat said:

“This is a really important step. Poverty pay has no place in society; we know that paying employees a living wage helps tackle inequality and helps families become more independent.”

“Council employees should be paid enough to live here and we are leading by example, we want the living wage to become a real consideration for businesses throughout the city.”
