Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, is calling on curry lovers to choose their favourite South Asian restaurant in his Hove constituency for the Tiffin Cup 2013.

Not only will the winning restaurant receive local recognition of its excellence, it will also have the opportunity to compete in the national state of the competition in the House of Commons with the country’s top curry-creators.

“I have already been contacted by a large number of curry enthusiasts from across Hove and Portslade, but I want to make a final call for any more nominations. Summit to discuss the most vulnerable in Brighton

Cllr Rob Jarrett
Cllr Rob Jarrett

Care of thousands of city’s vulnerable adults to be addressed at first ever City Summit. The event, which will help shape how Brighton & Hove City Council and its community and voluntary partners provide services to around 4,000 residents, will coincide with an update on how Adult Social Care services are performing and will identify successes and outline plans for the future the ‘local account’

While the council has modernised care for adults in Brighton & Hove by handing more control to those who receive care themselves as to what care is provided, the city faces real challenges with the numbers of residents aged 90 or over set to rise by more than 40% over the next decade.

Brighton & Hove City Council’s goals on tackling inequality and supporting vulnerable adults to live healthy and independent lives are:

•    For people to be able to live as they wish, confident that services are high quality, safe and serving their need for independence, well-being and dignity.
•    To increase efforts to ensure vulnerable adults are safe in all locations, whether in their own homes or in other settings. The council will vet and monitor all providers.
•    Key initiatives already delivered include a single Access Point for all social care through one telephone number, a Carers Card to offer discounts for carers to use the city’s leisure services from theatre tickets to massage and hair and beauty.

Cllr Rob Jarrett , Chair of the Adult, Care & Health Committee, said:

“We would urge older residents who receive care in the city, carers themselves and their families and friends to take part in the City Summit event this summer. It’s vital that we hear about what’s working well and what’s not so that we can work with our voluntary and community sector partners to ensure that residents enjoy the care they want that enables them to live independently for as long as possible.

“Together with our partners we have improved how we care for Brighton & Hove’s older residents and handed over more control where it’s wanted so that it’s tailored to the individual.

“Through self directed support package residents decide themselves the care they want at least half of all residents now in control of their care. With a growing older population we face real pressures on services so it’s important that we hear from as many residents as possible.”

Communal recycling in the city centre

Cllr Pete West
Cllr Pete West

A Brighton & Hove City Council consultation has begun on a communal recycling scheme for Brighton & Hove city centre.

The consultation sets out the pros and cons of communal recycling, with the positives including daily or regular weekday collections, convenience, and reducing the clutter caused by black boxes which are also blown around in bad weather, as opposed to more on-street bins and loss of some parking spaces.

A total of 32,000 households will receive leaflets and questionnaires inviting views on the proposals, which aims to see communal bins for mixed recycling (paper, card, cans and plastic bottles) placed in most city centre streets, near to communal refuse bins. Residents have until April 29 to respond.

Residents can also find out more at the following exhibitions:

Tuesday, March 26, Dorset Methodist Church, Dorset Gardens, 6pm
Wednesday, March 27, Hove Town Hall, 6pm
Thursday, March 28, Brighton Town Hall, 5.30pm

Councillor Pete West , Chair of the Environment and Sustainability committee, said:

”We look forward to hearing from residents living in the heart of the city and hope as many people as possible respond to the consultation.

“The aim of the proposals is to make it easier for residents to recycle, which will increase the city’s recycling rates, and to improve the environment in the city centre. We’ve set out the pros and cons of the proposal, so people can make up their own minds.”

If communal recycling is rolled out in the city centre, the council also plans to introduce incentive schemes to encourage residents to recycle more. This will include rewards for individuals and local communities.
