Brighton Council maintain their position in Stonewall Top 100 Employers Index

WEB.378.Brighton and Hove council took 15th position in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index maintaining the 15th position they achieved last year and beating all other local authorities to maintain their position as the country’s top gay-friendly local authority.

Stonewall the National Equality Charity started the Workplace Equality Index in 2005 and is a leading tool for employers to measure their efforts to create inclusive workplaces and tackle discrimination for lesbian, gay and bisexual employees.

The council has supported key LGBT events such as International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia; and Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Diversity Mentoring is also open to all LGBT employees, and can help with improving confidence, career building and challenging discrimination and prejudice at work.

A spokesperson for the council’s LGBT Workers Forum said:

“Over the past year, we’ve continued to support our staff through mentoring and reviewing the bullying process. We used our annual budget to have our biggest ever presence at Brighton Pride.

“While we are delighted with our success in the Stonewall index, it doesn’t recognise the excellent work the council has also done to increase the equality of trans people in the city.”

The leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, Councillor Jason Kitcat, said:

“I’m extremely proud of the work we’re doing to raise awareness of LGBT issues in the workplace, and we’ll continue to create a culture in which diversity is valued – it definitely remains a priority.”

Brighton & Hove were placed 3rd in 2009, 4th in 2010, 8th in 2011 and 15 in 2012.
