A new landmark for Hove seafront?

The Hove Civic Society are seeking Landowner’s consent from the City Counci for a seafront plinth that will display a series of temporary sculptures and changing art installations.

The Society wants to install the plinth on King’s Esplanade, opposite the statue of Queen Victoria to the south end of Grand Avenue. The plinth will be subject to planning consent.

The Society feels that the initiative would provide a link between the heritage and history of the area and the contemporary world. The plinth will showcase stimulating and inspirational sculptures that will be both borrowed and commissioned, and will provide opportunities for the involvement of local artists and cultural partners. Support for the initiative has been expressed from a wide range of potential partner organisations including Brighton Festival, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, and Same Sky.

Helmut Lusser, the society’s Chairman, was keen to have the support of Hove  MP, Mike Weatherley. Mike was very happy to oblige.

In his letter of support, Mike said:

“A prominent public space for sculpted work to be displayed is an excellent idea as Hove has a fantastic array of artistic talent. I believe that a Hove plinth would be a great way of building a strong sense of civic pride whilst creating an exciting and engaging attraction for Hove seafront.”

“Like the popular plinth in Trafalgar Square, I know that residents and tourists alike would flock to see this interesting attraction. A great bonus is that the temporary nature of the installations will ensure that it remains relevant in the future.”

The Hove Civic Society is a registered charity that has been in existence for over 50 years. The society encourages high standards of architecture and town planning, and their campaigns strive to celebrate and improve the character of Hove.

The application goes before the council’s Economic Development & Culture Committee on January 10.
